    Standing In A Crowd – (Chapter: 14)

“Mom, we are fine,” Spencer explained.

“We are here!”, Arthur said a little too enthused for skating.

Walking inside, they noticed that the skating ring hadn’t changed much since they had been in junior high school. There was still the same old vending machines and video games that they remembered. Scanning the room, they noticed that they were some of the tallest people there. The ring was full of kids. Ashley and Spencer looked at each other almost simultaneously as if to say ‘I’m sorry’ at the same time. Yet, they were pleasantly surprised that at least the music blasting on the floor was close to being up-to-date. They were actually playing “Dreams” by Deep Dish. The song was nostalgic but more modern now and kind of adult for the kids but just right for them.

Arthur glided over to them rubbing his hands together, “Okay guys. Who else needs to rent skates?’ He had been quick in getting his own party started.

Spencer couldn’t help but notice how excited her dad was or how much he wanted this to work. She wanted to try to enjoy herself just for him even though her mom looked decidedly pissed.

“Ewww, I brought my own Mr. C”, Ashley said as she pulled out some speed skates from her bag. Hmmm who knew that she would have her own skates after all that talk about how lame skating was.

Everyone got their skating gear and prepared for an interesting night.

“Alright gang…let’s get out there”, Arthur said as he guided Paula to the skating floor.

Spencer laughed a bit at her mother’s wobbly start nearly hitting the floor at her first step, but thankfully being saved by her father from the embarrassment. Spencer grabbed a hold of Ashley’s hand and guided her to the floor slowly skating hand-in-hand just to get familiar with the feel of skating again.

Paula looking back to watch the couple rolled her eyes, “Arthur, why do I have to go through this? Watching them be together.”

“Just two weeks Paula that’s it,” he quietly snapped not wanting to go into how he didn’t mind them.

Ashley was actually a good skater. She turned to skate backwards while facing Spencer holding her hands as kids flew by them.

    1. I really loved this chapter. I miss the skating rank, too even though it’s filled with sweaty kid’s. I would’ve been disappointed in the girl if they did it in a dirty bathroom. They need to act like good girls for themselves and Spencer’s parents. Ashley really cares about Spencer because if she didn’t she would’ve jumped her in the bathroom. I’m glad they are showing self control.
