    A deadly choice

Boarding another ship in conquest was not the first approach Bette took when the opportunity struck. She was usually more careful, often meticulous in her planning, her attack almost choreographed… preferring stealth, sabotage or surrender. Poison worked, murder always an option.

Bribery or trickery was entertaining for her inner circle and overwhelming the target her favorite. Once she simply walked onboard and killed the captain, slitting his throat while his First Mate stood there in shock, his own fate no less messy. But she was unknown then, her reputation not yet legend status, her ability to move undetected easier. Now ships ran from her, castles boarded tight when she was within range, no one trusted her, her every move had to be careful.

She thought back to the fateful day long ago when she boarded a ship flying the flag of Kennard, a fat, loaded vessel that moved sluggishly through the waters with no escort or guard. When they first sighted the ship, she almost decided to let it pass by, only changing her mind at the very last minute, bored with the endless sailing.

She did so without even a cursory meeting with her inner circle to plan the attack. Hindsight being what it was, this turned out to be the best decision she ever made.

“Be ready, Tee…” she spoke suddenly, into the quietness of the cabin as she watched her wife dress for the attack.

She loved this part of the day. The way Tina transformed from a sensual, creamy, vision of delights to one of the crew, her boots knee high and her belt wide over her tan pants. Buttoning up the front of her shirt, Tina made eye contact and Bette sighed.

She loved watching her wife get dressed, but not as much as she loved watching her undress.
    “I will be, Honey.”

“Be ready for a fight, for ugliness, for anything. Blood will be shed today.”

“I know, Babe. You tell me these things before any fight. I am a hardened warrior by now. I will be ready.”

Chuckling, Bette reached for her, pulling the blonde to stand in front of the chair where she sitting, her own fingers taking over the buttons, pausing to run the over the swells underneath.

    1. Oh, come on! You are killing me here. Give the signal already for the archers to put down the rest of the crew including the freaking boy king. Please, please, please don’t make us wait too long for the next chapter. Even though it’s driving me nuts, the chapter was beautifully written. And I enjoyed every bit of it.

    2. Oh my. Here we go. We are reaching the final showdown. All hands. This chapter is like a curtain call of sorts. Dana as the expert archer. Take a bow. Carmen and her potions and poisons. Shane at Bette’s side. And on. All coming together to do their part for their captain and her lady. You have written Bette as a true swashbuckling giant. And we get to envision that in this chapter. As you write: “She was the shadow in the night, the serpent who strikes, Deliverer of Death and Mistress of Pain and songs would be sung of her conquest this day.” Bette is a force to be reckoned with; to be feared; but knowing no fear herself. True, Bette’s Achilles heel is her love and devotion for Tina and their children. But she and Tina have planned over and over. Tina is smart and tactical and just as ready as Bette. Tina has come such a long way. I have faith. And their love will help guide them.

It seems that Bette recognizes this may be her final battle and she is determined to retire in style. “She answered the leading man with a smile so deadly the air around her seemed to grow cold as ice and his grin faltered … for Bette’s smile could curdle milk, it was the smile of death warmed over on the stove, waiting for him to swallow it down like a bowl of putrid soup. A sense of calmness descended on her, covering her like a blanket, a cloud, a shroud. She felt strangely at peace. She would kill him and many more, and today… this glorious day… her life would truly begin.” Yes! So so very great!

And so it began. This is perhaps my favorite section of this chapter. I love how you describe Bette. A true legend. “Many and more songs would be written and sung about this fight. Far and wide, minstrels and troubadours claimed they bore witness to this very event. Ballads were performed, children reenacting the Last Battle in play yards, even royal history documenting this history as a cautionary tale for future kings to learn from. Captain Porter’s status as a likeable rouge, a hero of the masses, an unbeaten legend of her time was cemented on this day.” One can easily envision people sitting around their fires telling tales of the time they saw Captain Porter in action. And there is more:

“The truth was… none of the singers or poets or storytellers were there. Few on this ship lived to tell the tale, and those that did weren’t talking. Some rumors came from The Whisperer herself, an idea planted here, another over there, tendrils of truth so outlandish they had to be believed. Other rumors grew legs, traveling from city to city with the song of a battle forged in romance, a quest borne from love.” WOW. Just wow. And the legend continues to grow. I think my favorite passage in the chapter is probably the following:

“Some say Captain Porter was like a serpent roused from a deep sleep, spitting venom, ice in her veins. Others swore she flew up the stairs without touching one step, her sword a blur, her blade hungry for royal blood. And still more declared that Bette hardly seemed to move at all and yet was everywhere at once, her blades plentiful, death at her fingertips.”

Beautiful writing. Beautiful imagery. It does not surprise me that you ended on a cliff hanger. It might look like the Boy King has the upper hand at the moment but I suspicion that our Tina has a plan. Poison arrows. Perhaps poison knives? Tina may have potions and poisons hidden all over her body. Before all is said and down I believe Tina will most definitely make her presence known in a very big way. I believe that is more than wishful thinking on my part. If our Captain has any weakness it is Tina, the children and now, her mother. But ultimately I think her love for them is actually one more strength. I cannot wait for Captain Bette to assist the Boy King in meeting his end. I am not sure how I feel about Gigi. I need to think about that. And of course there is Bette’s mother. So close but so ill. We know of a very gifted medicine woman who just might be able to work her magic.

How will you tie up the loose ends? I cannot wait for part two of the battle. And the resolutions. And the reuniting of the family. The children have a grandmother. Perhaps Kit will join them when all of the danger ends. I love this story. Well done. The stage is now set.

      • GEE-Golly-bums!!!!

Billy! Your questions are mine. But I’M not sure how to pull it off in “BK” fashion . . . hmmmm . . . Gigi. will she turn on the boi muppet and help????

Tina doesn’t like killin’ but I say she’ll do something. Perhaps she and her Captain worked on an escape?

      • Billy my dear and faithful friend – the loose ends, the loose ends. As you pointed out – there are resolutions and reuniting and a whole new adventure waiting for our couple if only they can solve this little puzzle of a pesky, irritating King. Perhaps poison knives? Potions and planning and pockets galore! And the puzzle of Gigi to unravel. And how did Tina manage to get captured anyway?
But death is at Bette’s fingertips and death is in her smile, so never fear… there is a way out. I just need to find it.
Thank you x100 for your lovely post, you captured so much about what I love about this couple and this story. more to come. BK

      • Wow! Such poetry from you both. I’ve been waiting for this chapter for so long and the mastery with which it was written. The imagery was so powerful that I felt like a fly on the wall watching it all happen. Thank you for this treat that was so well written and your response, Billy was just as exquisite.

    3. I was just rereading this and the remember who you are sequel when I found out you updated. And it’s completely made my day. This chapter was incredible as always your writing is absolutely amazing the twists in this chapter it drew me in even more I truly am hooked to every piece of writing you write

      • Glad to make your day, Maddyson! Can’t be a drama without some… drama can it? I don’t always end on a cliffhanger but the King had to play some sort of trick on them before they can get what they came for, right? Stay tuned, more to come BK

      • My dear SG, I have missed you! Hope all is well in your world and love hearing from you. I always enjoy reading your thoughts after I post a chapter. Don’t worry, I will write as quickly as I can to put you out of your misery. Thank you for sticking with this little adventure and taking the time to comment every time. BK

    4. I still absolutely love this story. I have faith that Bette’s crew will come to her rescue so she won’t have to make a decision between the two. Hopefully the boy king will come to his dimaise from all of it as well. Thanks for the update!!

    5. OMG, what a cliffhanger!

So enjoyed this chapter. Loved how Bette enjoyed watching Tina get dressed, but not as much as she loved watching her undress…I get that. And how Tina said she hopes Maxine sees Bette the way she sees her – Tina always knowing how to soothe Bette.

Bette was magnificent in the battle, such great action I don’t think I breathed while reading it. Songs written and sung about this fight, some rumors from The Whisperer – of course, lol.

Then Bette saw her mother, and then the cliffhanger! I love this story. BK, you are a GREAT writer.

      • Thank you Westy! I love their softer moments too. I struggle with the battle scenes to be honest. I know nothing about ships or battles or sword fighting so I am glad everyone gives me grace in this areas and allows me to write Bette as the best there is! Because she is. Glad you along for the ride, so appreciate your comments, thank you
        BK

    6. OH.MY.GOD what a chapter and the cliffhanger …

What an extremely difficult choice, her mother or her wife, what a dilemma…
What I don’t understand is how was Tina captured, where were Shane and Carmen or even Dana?? but I have confidence in Tina, she could very well repeat William Bates’ dagger or maybe a arrow from Dana … I can’t wait to find out.
One question though, what about Gigi, she’s not dead yet…
