    Fly Away – Chapter 10

The next evening, Tina was sitting in the bath, trying not to think about anything. The water was hot and mind-numbing, which was good. It had been a fairly quiet day, with Eric being attentive but thankfully not pushing her to talk, and she had gone about her chores faithfully as ever, in spite of Eric’s protestations. She’d made a nice dinner but she and Eric only managed to pick at it. She felt tired to her bones, her heart bruised.

In the light of day and the normalcy of her routine, Tina realized now that by avoiding people, she had been trying to protect herself. Sarah’s death had been brought up indirectly, in the rudest way possible, and she had survived that. The worst having happened, she had nothing much more to fear from social interaction. What more could be done to her? In a twisted way she was glad she’d had to face it.

She couldn’t go on the way that she had been, and yet nothing held much appeal anymore. She supposed she was still at that crossroads, but she knew that either way, it was going to be painful.

She sunk deeper in the bath and closed her eyes. She didn’t want to think about it anymore.

The next day was Sunday, and Eric went to the store as usual. He brought Tina some flowers back, and an apparently randomly chosen glossy fashion magazine. Tina thanked him and was listlessly flipping through the book in the living room when the doorbell rang. Tina froze, the page in her hands. The bell rang again, and Eric, roused from his office, peeked into the living room.

Tina? Want me to get that?”

Tina nodded, unsure of what to do. Eric disappeared from sight and opened the door. Predictably, it was Bette. Tina could hear her voice, low, murmuring, filtering through the foyer. Tina stood up and stole through the living room and the adjoining dining room so she would remain out of sight. She slipped into the bedroom and shut the door, just as Eric was letting Bette inside.

Now what? She didn’t want to see Bette. But, at the same time, she knew that it wasn’t Bette’s fault that Gabby had said the one thing that would hurt her the most. It was just an unhappy coincidence.
