Into My Arms – Part Four

“This movie… sucks.” Alice was not impressed, staring at her TV screen in annoyance. “Why would Cuba Gooding Jr do a movie that sucks?”

Tina patted her hand reassuringly. “Maybe it gets better?”

Alice scoffed and folded her arms over her chest. A few minutes later she leaned over and picked up the video’s case, squinting at the back. “Oh Cuba, why do this to yourself.” She mumbled quietly, mournfully, before flinging the case back on the ground.

Tina frowned slightly. “Isn’t that… Callisto? From Xena: Warrior Princess?” She leaned forward, watching the woman on screen as she ran about dressed in a black bad guy outfit, being all tough and stoic-like.

Alice sighed. “Yeah, it’s her.” She looked at her lap, before looking at Tina. “Dana loves that show you know.”

Tina grabbed the remote and muted the movie. She turned to Alice, who had gone back to looking at her lap. “Al, you need to talk about it.”

Alice frowned and shook her head. “No I don’t.” She mumbled.

“You can’t stop thinking about her can you?”

Alice sighed, contemplated throwing a tantrum, and decided instead to throw herself into the backrest of the lounge. She looked at Tina pitifully, pouting.

Tina just nodded, turning so she could face Alice fully, and getting comfortable. “Tell me everything.”

Alice just rolled her eyes and groaned. “There’s nothing to tell.”

Tina reached over and slapped Alice’s leg. “Al, don’t make me go all mother hen on you.” Tina smiled softly.

Alice sat up, turning around and sitting cross legged, facing Tina. “Look, it’s my own stupid ***** okay? You don’t have to listen to it, with everything you’re going through…”

“Bullshit Al. You’re just afraid of saying it out loud.” Tina smiled knowingly, crossing her arms in satisfaction.

Alice’s eyes narrowed. “Are you calling me a chicken?”

    Tina nodded.

Alice’s mouth dropped open, then she closed it. And pouted again.

“Listen Al, please talk to me about it? If not for your sake, then do it for me. These movies you hired are just awful, and it will really take my mind off of everything that’s going on…” Tina pleaded, knowing that if Alice believed she was doing it for Tina’s sake, and not her own, then nothing would stop her from talking about it.

Alice nodded, and shook her head a little. “Okay, okay. For you Tina, I’ll… I’ll get all mushy for you.” She sighed deeply. Then she frowned a little, and looked at Tina for help. “How do I… start…”

Tina smiled, excited. She loved girl talk, especially when it didn’t involve her or Bette… No, it was Alice’s turn to vent. She got as comfortable as possible. “Okay, well how do you feel about Dana?”

It was Alice’s turn to slap Tina’s leg. “Don’t start with something hard!”

Tina chuckled. “Okay, well why did you kiss her then?”

Alice groaned, tipped sideways and buried her head in the couch’s backrest.

Tina leaned forward, and attempted to pull her back into a seated position. “Okay! Okay!” She laughed as Alice’s face appeared, looking tormented. “Alright, well how about, why don’t you like Tonya?”

Alice suddenly sat up energized, causing Tina to fall back slightly in shock. “SHE’S A ***** *****!”

Tina’s eyebrows raised, and she nodded slowly. “And, uh, why is she a *****?”

Alice could no longer sit, so she jumped up and began pacing and gesturing wildly around her living room. “I’ll tell you why! She’s cheap! And annoying! AND SHE KILLED DANA’S CAT!” Alice nodded, emphasizing the shock of her statement with wild facial expressions. Tina looked on, slightly overwhelmed and highly amused. Alice started ticking off points on her fingers. “She killed Mr.P, didn’t give me change, lied to Dana, seduced her against her will because she’s an evil succubus demon who’s sucked Dana into her evil clutches, she doesn’t like cats, and man,” Alice shook her head, in disbelief, drawing out ‘man’ into a four syllable word. “That she-***** has some bad ***** Juju surrounding her.” Alice huffed.

Tina took a moment to take it all in. “So, the only reason you kissed Dana, was to get her away from Tonya?”

Alice bit her lip, deflated at Tina’s question. “No…” She said, very softly and not meeting Tina’s eyes.

“I didn’t think so… Al, sweetie, sit down.”

Alice obeyed, sitting next to Tina. Tina grabbed her hands, rubbing them comfortingly, trying to sound as gentle as possible. “Al, you haven’t really given me any real reasons to not like Tonya, other than well… you sound jealous.” Alice nodded very slightly. “So what does this tell you huh?”

Alice inhaled deeply. She looked at Tina shyly. “That I want to be with Dana.”

Tina smiled encouragingly. “Ah see now we’re…”

But Alice interrupted. “That I’m in love with Dana.” She was suddenly possessed, after holding it in for so long and now saying it out loud, it was like she couldn’t stop. “I love Dana.” Her voice was getting louder. “I’m ***** in love with Dana!” She jumped up, letting go of Tina’s hands, and shouting as loud as she could. “I’M IN LOVE WITH DANA FAIRBANKS!”

A banging noise was heard from Alice’s ceiling, and a muffled “Shut the ***** up!” came from upstairs. Alice collapsed next to Tina again. Tina just smiled.

    “Feels good doesn’t it?”

    Alice nodded.

“You’re going to have to tell her…” Tina said quietly, and Alice slapped her leg again.

    “Baby steps Tee, baby steps.”

Tina rolled her eyes. Alice looked at her feeling utterly relieved. “Do you want to talk about… it?”

Tina shook her head, grabbed the remote and un-muted the television. “Oh, we’re at the end of the movie…”

Alice watched her for a few seconds, before patting Tina’s thigh comfortingly in understanding and turning her attention to the end of the movie. “Jesus, either I’m really really in love, or that hot medic chick totally looks like Dana…”

Dana drummed her fingers on her steering wheel. She’d been parked outside her own house, her own condo, for the last twenty minutes and hadn’t moved. At all.

“This is stupid…” She mumbled. “This is my house…” She sighed. She looked at her own front door. She shook her head and started up her car, before slamming her hands on the steering wheel and turning it off again. “I think I can…. I think I can…” She chanted softly as she unhooked her seat belt and got out of her car. She stood still, took a deep breath, and then quickly got back in her car again. She rested her forehead against the steering wheel, and groaned.

She took a few deep breaths, before slowly raising her head to look at her house again. And screamed.

Tonya was racing down the path towards her, reaching the car and flinging the door open. “Oh my God Dana sweetie where have you been? Oh sweetie Dana!” She had pulled Dana bodily from the car, and thrust Dana’s face into her cleavage, in a desperate embrace. “Oh I called the police and everything!” Tonya pulled back from the ‘embrace’ and stared into Dana’s face. “Where have you been?” Before pulling Dana in again, holding her as tightly as she could.

Dana awkwardly patted Tonya on the back. “I… I can’t… breathe…” She gasped out.

“Me neither!” Tonya cried out. “I’m so happy to see you I can barely breathe!” Tonya let Dana go and reached over to close the still open car door, Dana watching the action helplessly, wincing as the door was slammed shut and her fate, it seemed, was sealed.

Tonya grabbed Dana’s hand, and started leading her back towards the condo.

Dana cleared her throat as she was being led. “Ton… We have to talk…”

“Oh I know! We have a whole wedding to organize! I’ve already told my parents, they’re ecstatic that you’re a famous sports star, they’ve seen your ad and everything! Oh and my friends….” Tonya babbled on endlessly, leading Dana into the house and shutting, and then locking, the front door behind them.

“No… that’s not…” Dana tried in vain to speak, but Tonya was on a roll and Dana wasn’t even sure what it was she wanted to say to Tonya. Tonya was leading her upstairs, seemingly toward the bedroom.

“Now I can’t have you disappearing on me again Dana! Can you imagine how worried I was? I called everyone! And it was lucky I called the country club this morning, and they let me know you were there otherwise the police would’ve gotten involved!”

Dana was frowning, very deeply. “You called everyone?”

Tonya was nodding, and turned to give an adoring look at Dana. “I was very worried…”

“Did you try my friends?” Dana cut her off, her voice rising a little as they reached the bedroom.

Tonya shut the bedroom door behind them, and threw Dana up against it. “Well no… but oh Dana!” She latched onto Dana’s neck, kissing and sucking furiously. “I missed you so much!” She mumbled, between kisses.

Dana shoved Tonya off her with all her might. She was breathing a little heavily. “So you’re that worried about me, that you don’t call my friends?”

Tonya looked stunned. “I… I only had that horrible Alice’s number and she doesn’t even like me…” Tonya stopped talking as Dana’s jaw clenched. Oops, had she called Alice awful out loud? “Well she’s not really awful… you know how it is…”

Dana just glared at Tonya, a multitude of thoughts swirling through her head yet nothing coming out of her mouth. Tonya went to move toward Dana again, but Dana held her hand up in front of her. “Don’t, come near me.”

Tonya’s mouth fell open, before she straightened her clothes somewhat indignantly, and calmly walked to and sat down on Dana’s bed.

Dana took a very deep breath. “Tonya, we need to talk, and not about the wedding or your parents or your friends.”

Tonya’s eyes narrowed a little. “Dana, where were you last night?”

Dana took another deep breath. “It… doesn’t matter where I was, okay Ton. I need to say some things to you, okay and it’s really hard for me.” Dana closed her eyes. Tonya studied Dana, the way she was standing and acting and not jumping all over her as she usually seemed to do.

“You *****!” Tonya suddenly screamed, jumping up. “You’re having an affair!”

Dana took a step back, bumping into the door. It wasn’t true, at least entirely, but it felt true and that caused her to remain silent, which in Tonya’s mind validated her accusation. Tonya’s face scrunched up in disbelief.

Dana lent against the door, and sighed. This was not going exactly as she’d hoped it would.

Bette dismally sat on her couch, watching TV and lazily eating ice cream. She hadn’t moved all day. She’d watched bad made-for-TV movie after soap opera after bad made-for-TV movie. She was, and felt, suitably miserable.

She frowned and turned towards the front door when she heard a tentative knocking. Who would be knocking at her door at, what, nine o’clock at night? Unless it was…

Bette hurled herself off the lounge, quickly smoothing her clothes down and striding to the door, throwing it open.

“Tee…” She said expectantly, her face falling when she saw Jenny standing there. “Oh… it’s you.”

Jenny nodded a little, looking unsure. “I’m sorry, were you expecting someone?”

Bette managed to wipe the disappointment from her face, and attempt a smile. She leaned against the doorway. “What can I do for you Jenny?” She said softly.

Jenny smiled, still looking unsure. “I was hoping Tina was in, actually. Is she… here?” Jenny looked at Bette, realizing she’d never seen her looking anything other than stunningly perfect, and here she was looking, for lack of a better word, like *****.

Bette’s half hearted smile disappeared altogether. She cleared her throat. “No, Jenny. Tina isn’t here.”

Jenny took a step backward, wringing her hands together. “Oh okay. Ah, do you know when she might be back or…?”

Bette’s eyes closed, and she took a deep breath, her head hanging a little. “No, I don’t know if she’ll be back…”

Jenny’s eye’s suddenly opened wide in understanding, she stepped towards Bette reaching a tentative hand towards her. “Are you okay?”

Bette seemed to slump a little more, but she chuckled ruefully. “Do I look okay?”

Jenny bit her lip, not answering. “Well uh, I know we’ve never really spoken properly or anything, but if you need someone to talk to…?”

Bette went to shake her head in the negative, and then stopped. She looked at Jenny, standing there innocently, and remembered a late night slurpee run that had ended up in a conversation with a broken and confused man. Tim. Tim and Jenny. Tim and Jenny, and Marina. Bette cleared her throat again. “Do you, want to come inside?”

Jenny looked surprised for a second, before nodding and smiling and entering Bette’s house.

Alice reached over and picked up her vibrating phone. “Yeah?” She said absently, mesmerized by the TV screen. “Oh hey Shane…. Nope… watching movies… bad movies… yeah… no… wait let me ask her.” She turned toward Tina, who was similarly ensconced with the flickering images on the TV. “Shane wants to know if we want to do something tonight?”

Tina glanced at Alice. “Yeah, of course. Is she okay?”

Alice covered the mouthpiece of the phone and whispered. “I don’t think she wants to be by herself right now, you know?”

    Tina nodded. “Who does…”

Alice uncovered the mouthpiece. “Shane?… Yeah come over here…” She glanced at Tina before turning away from her slightly and quietly muttered into the phone. “There’s no way I’m taking her out of my apartment tonight after what happened last night… yeah… yeah… oh guess what?” Alice grinned. “I’m totally in love with Dana!” Alice frowned. “What do you mean you knew that already… okay, whatever we’ll see you soon.” Alice threw her phone down, and went back to watching the TV. “She’ll be here soon.”

Tina nodded. “Great.” She smirked and looked at Alice. “Well done by the way.”

    Alice feigned innocence. “What?”

Tina looked back at the screen. “You’re going to have to tell Dana soon…”

    “Baby steps, Tee… baby steps…”

Dana shook her head, sighing and kneeling down to try and clean up the broken vase.

Tonya had thrown a vase at her. And a framed picture of them together. And a shoe.

“Who throws a shoe? Honestly…” She muttered, before wincing. A small drop of blood was trailing from her finger, a tiny piece of glass stuck out of it. Her lip trembled a little as she stared at the cut. “Oh, oh no…” She stood up, shaking. “Oh oh get it out, get it out…” She stumbled towards her bathroom, rummaging threw her cupboards one handed. Pain seemed to be emanating outwards from the tiny piece of glass in waves. There were tears in Dana’s eyes, though she was steadily becoming more pissed off than anything else. “*****…” She muttered. Finally finding the tweezers, she stood up and took a rather deep but shaky breath.

She steadied her finger, and steadied the hand holding the tweezers.

A few minutes later, she gave a triumphant yell, the glass removed and her finger no longer hurting as much. “Yeah! Yeah ***** you!” She directed at the tiny piece of glass, throwing it in the bin, and doing away with it forever. “***** you too Tonya…” She mumbled.

She wrapped a band aid around her finger and went back into her bedroom, collapsing on her bed. She’d clean the glass up later, she was too pissed off at the moment. And tired. And she’d really missed her bed.

She sighed and rolled onto her back. Tonya was gone, though some of her stuff was still in Dana’s condo. And there was a big dent in the bedroom door from the photo frame that would always serve to remind her that yes, Tonya had been there. She sighed again.

Now she was truly alone in her house, for the first time in… ever. It wasn’t so bad, she mused, at least for the moment. For the moment in fact, it was nice to have absolute quiet.

    And Lara.

    And Alice.

It was very confusing, but why should she have to make any decisions or conclusions now? And what decisions or conclusions did she have to make anyway? It wasn’t like Lara asked to get back with her, or Alice asked to be with her at all. So what was she confused about? The thing she’d had to deal with, what to do with Tonya, was dealt with and over.

Well, not over entirely. Tonya’s stuff was still there, and Tonya mentioned something about not getting rid of her that easily and blah blah she really did love Tonya and she’d go crawling back and blah blah blah. Dana closed her eyes. But she hadn’t really loved Tonya, she’d just really loved the idea of Tonya. The idea of their future, secure, together. Dana’s eyes opened. It could’ve really been anyone though, she mused, anyone who had thrown themselves at her and professed their love for her, she would’ve proposed to anyone.

And then there was Alice. Dana couldn’t help but smile as she thought of her quirky blonde best friend. Alice. Alice. Alice. She noticed her stomach clench as she thought of her, and wondered what it meant. She could be in love with her, it was very possible. She’d never really be in love before, well there was Ralph, and she chuckled at herself for still calling her first girlfriend Ralph. But it reminded her of Alice, so she stuck with it. There was Ralph, who she had loved, or at least thought she’d loved. It had been so exciting and new, and over so quickly, she hadn’t had time to see if they could’ve really been IN love.

And then there was Lara. She sighed. Lara. Lara. Lara. She noticed her stomach do the same clenching thing as with Alice, and frowned. She knew she could’ve fallen in love with Lara, that she had been on her way to just that when Conrad had helped ***** it up for her. And now, she didn’t know how she felt.

She was so torn. So, so torn.

Her eyelids drooped shut, it was all too much to think about. It wasn’t as if she had any propositions anyway, and if she did figure out how she felt, would that mean she’d have to act on it?

    She groaned.

    “Sleep…” She mumbled.

She’d just go to sleep, and disappear into her dreams, and not think about it anymore.

She had really, really missed her bed.

    1. Man… I missed “Chill factor”, it was on TV the other day… A cameo by Erin AND Hudson Leick!! Oh man.. But on to the chapter:-) Cool, looking forward to the next one! Keep up the good work!

    2. I loved that Shane already knew about Al’s feelings. Then again it was pretty darn obvious if everyone’s been watching the signals. They came from Dana too, even when she was with Lara. These two roads will eventually lead to each other. Whether it be next season, or five from now. It’s going to happen. Besides, they are adorible. Al and Dana Forever!
