Monday Dinnertime (Time of Day 15)

“One, two,” Alice wiggled her fingers, “tickle the tummyhouse.” While saying the last part she began tickling Angelica.

As with the other times, the toddler’s laughter started even before Alice’s fingers touched her. Angelica was seated in a chaise out by the pool, with Alice straddling the seat at its midpoint.

    “If she gets sick.”

“She won’t get sick,” Alice scoffed, not even bothering to look at Bette in response to the admonition. “One, two, three…”

Once again, Angelica started to giggle.

    “…tickle the tummyhouse.”

“And you don’t need to use baby-talk.”

“Don’t need to,” Alice chirped. She shook her head, getting the child to mirror her actions. “We just like to.”

By this point, Bette had moved into Alice’s line of sight so it was more difficult to miss the disapproving glance.

“Uno, dos, tres, palpitate the abdomen.” The words were different, but the actions and reactions the same.

But this didn’t mean that her mother appreciated the action even with the modification. She picked up Angelica and sat back in the chaise, folding her legs and seating the child in her lap. “I think we need a little quiet time.”

She held a small stuffed toy before her daughter; the girl grabbed the stuffed rabbit and started gnawing on one of its ears. Bette took the toy out of the child’s mouth, and shook it a little, making the girl laugh.

    “Mommy B, stands for boring.”

    “Alice.”

“C’mon, Bette,” Alice picked up a stuffed koala, and started to make it headbutt the rabbit that Angelica was holding. “You’ve been a fecal mood since you returned.”

    That phrase earned another look.

“What?” Alice held up the toy as if were speaking to her friend. “I’m just trying to be a good Earth Mother.”

“It’s just hard, you know. She’s out there in New York.”

“Yeah, she’s a four-hour plane ride away and not in a war zone. I got it.”

Alice held out the koala for Angelica, who dropped the rabbit that her mother had given her in favor of the new one. “Bye sweetie,” she said, giving the child a kiss on the forehead.

“Alice,” Bette yelled after her friend. She followed the blonde towards the door. “I’m sorry. Please, stay. I promised you dinner.”

“And I don’t see any dinner.”

    “Let me call. Thai?”

    “Whatever.”

Bette handed off her daughter to Alice, who took the child into the living room. She put Angelica down on the floor and pulled out a basket with toys. “Let’s see how many of these we can take from the basket before Mommy orders dinner.” Alice took out a block and placed it on the floor, giving a cheer.

When Angelica did the same, they both cheered. A new game began.

“I’m surprised you didn’t go snatch Ang last night,” Alice called back to the kitchen.

    “I considered.”

    That piqued Alice’s interest. “And?”

    “And, I’m on the phone.”

Feeling something fall on her leg, Alice looked down. Angelica had mostly emptied the basket and was starting to pile the toys next to, and on, Alice.

“Your mommies are silly,” Alice whispered.

“Anyway, we’ve got Thai food on the way.” Bette came strolling into the living room.

    “So no Tina.”

“She had said it’d be okay to come over.”

    “But?”

“But all I could think of was Jodi, and how I left things with Jodi. Could I unload that on Tina?”

“Tina, as in the woman who gave you the clues on how to approach Jodi so you could win her back? Tina who could write ‘The Idiot’s Guide to Bette Porter’? That Tina?”

Bending down to pick up her daughter, Bette just shook her head. “Look at that mess your Aunt Alice has made. I guess she’ll just have to clean it up while you’re in the bath.”

“So, um, you’re not going to tell me about last night?”

Bette poked her head back around the corner. “Nope.”

And with that she headed down the hall to the bathroom.

    (the end)

    1. Gotta say I love this series. It’s funny, charming, and touching. I like it very much. It’s a slow progress for Tina and Bette. I enjoy these little glimpses into your S5. I’m not much a TiBette shipper but your story is one of the few that I read and enjoy. Thanks for taking the time to post this. Can’t wait for the next update. Thanks again.

    2. Alice is right, Angelica’s mommies are silly. For chrissakes Bette, all you could think of was Jodi? Were you engrossed in how badly she treated you? Were you wondering why you ran to follow your abuser? Conjecturing as to why the supposedly hot sex with her lacked any sense of steam?

    3. Um…The end…???? Do I need “The Idiots Guide to Bette Porter” ? cuz u said that last time…so do u mean it this time or r u just messin’ with my head??? Anywayz if u decide to continue, especially minus ‘the Jodi’ then I’m all for it…

    4. Pseud, I just love this series of posts. The progress is slow but steady as Bette and Tina attempt to redefine their relationship. Parenthood is one side however it is not their only connection. I do believe that they should be together. Please continue this amazing journey. Many thansk from Your Loyal Fan.

    5. I agree w/funnyone. Jodi is really an abuser or just plain selfish. She wants what she wants when she wants. Bette has deceived herself into thinking that she needs to reinvent herself and subvert one of the best things about her: her alphaness. She just needs to be considerate of others’ feelings. Her assertiveness was always a positive in my mind. I love the way your Alice talks to her and doesn’t take her crap and places her in reality. PPS.

    6. FUNNYONE I think Bette likes being abused…s1, s2,s3 and now s4…the lady has ‘issues’…what miracle in s5 is gonna snap her head out of the alligator’s mouth?
