    “…the eternal rocks beneath…” Ch. 10

That hug lasted two lifetimes.  Bette couldn’t let go and neither could Tina.  And as the embrace continued both young women became aware of how their bodies were touching.  That’s when the hug broke and they both looked away in embarrassment.  If Bette had had the nerve, she would have kissed Tina on the mouth, right there out in the open on the main drag of the little town of Athens, Tennessee.  And Tina, if she had known at that moment Bette was gay, she wouldn’t have hesitated one bit to take Bette’s hand and drag her into the garage, slide the stall door down and pushed the beautiful brunette up against the wall and kiss her on the lips.  But neither knew, at least for certain, if the affection and touching and love meant something more than friendship.  And so the glances, the nervous giggles, the looks, and the unspoken declaration of love and attraction continued.

“You mean it?  You’re gonna stay the whole summer?” Tina asked.

“The whole summer,” Bette grinned and she added, “I’ll go back with my father and Kit in August and fly from home back up to Yale.”

“You doing that just for me?” Tina asked softly.  Bette’s brown eyes were working on her and she suddenly felt light headed and happy.

“For you, for us,” Bette answered.

Tina held out her candy bar.  “And you came all the way into town to bring me a candy bar, huh?” Tina asked

“I did.  I remembered the first one I brought you and I thought maybe it would do the trick.  Maybe break through your stubbornness.”

“My stubbornness?” Tina raised her eyebrow and smiled.

Bette teetered; that eyebrow got her every time.

“You know you’re stubborn; don’t deny it,” Bette said, pushing on Tina’s shoulder, anything to make physical contact.

“Hmm, maybe,” Tina said mischievously and she laughed and took Bette by the elbow and led her into the garage. “Come on in and I’ll finish up and we’ll head back home, okay?”

Bette followed her, wondering all along if Tina had just intended to be flirtatious or if she was imagining things.

Inside she started looking around. This was not like the garage she had remembered.  This wasn’t like any garage she had ever seen.  Everything was clean and ordered, the concrete floor was polished and buffed with an epoxy and all of the metal tool drawers were sparkling.  The only evidence of grease was on a mat that was laid across the truck’s radiator.
