    This Time Around

It was Thanksgiving night at the Kennard-Porter house. The food had been cooked (this year Bette had chipped in and helped by making the cranberry sauce, heating the rolls, and making stove-top stuffing), the pots and dishes had been washed, Angelica put to bed and Kit and the rest of their friends sent away full and happy, if a little tipsy.

Bette crawled into bed next to Tina and let out a contented sigh as her body melted into the mattress, followed by a huge and entirely unladylike burp.

Bette! Gross,” Tina said, turning her back and covering her nose with the duvet.

Sorry. You don’t have to make such a big thing about it.”

I’m not. I’m just tired,” Tina said over her shoulder.

That’s okay then.” Bette curled herself around Tina’s back and smoothed the back of her hair. “You have every right to be tired. You put together an amazing dinner for everyone as usual.”

    Yeah,” Tina sighed.

You’re so good at all that stuff, T – really, the perfect hostess during this time of the year.”

Mmhmm,” Tina snuggled into Bette’s embrace and covered Bette’s arm, which was slung over Tina’s waist, with her own.

You love it. And you know, over the years you’ve helped me appreciate the holidays a lot more than I used to.”

    Really?” Tina’s eyes were closed.

Yes, definitely. Now I’m actually looking forward to hearing about your Christmas plans. I guess you want us to go get a tree tomorrow and start decorating it?” Bette planted a kiss on Tina’s shoulder. “To tell you the truth, I actually snuck up to the attic and got down the box of decorations. I stashed it in the office.”

Tina turned slightly so that she could look at Bette. “You did what?”

I told you, I’m more into the holiday thing this year. Your influence has finally got me into it. I thought we could go early and take Angie to pick out the tree, then do a little decorating, then maybe do a little shopping?”

    Bette, no.”

Bette frowned. “No what? Isn’t this what you’ve always wanted? For me to share your enthusiasm for this kind of thing?”

    1. I liked this a lot but I like closure. Did Tina have some underlying reason other than what she stated? Sometimes, if you’re the one that gets it all going, all the responsibility, it gets to be old.

    2. Enjoyed the story, but like the previous comments, why and where did Tina develope these feelings about Christmas. Would love to see what actually happens on Christmas morning and in Disneyland. Need another post.

    3. Merry Saturday (Sunday?) to you omalley. I enjoyed this story; I’ve enjoyed everything you’d posted and for the past few days have been rereading all your Christmas stories. There was a time or two when I’d skipped Christmas and spent it alone in my dorm room at university, to the concern of family and friends. I didn’t know why I did it either. I guess I felt it was too much of a bother, too, so I totally get Tina here. And then I kind of missed the whole grand frilly Christmassy family Christmas thing, with all its commercialist trappings and whatnot, and I’m not at all a fan of organized religion either. Christmas is just too happy an idea to forego I guess. I hope Tina comes around, in your next Christmas story perhaps? :D

    4. Hey omalley, Many thanks fo this interesting and well-written story. It was such a different kind of Christmas tale. I for one love the festive season. Yes, there are lots to do but it is worth it seeing the joy of peoples faces are you spent time and exchange gifts. I was glad that Angie gots some presents as it is such a special time for kids. While commercialism is rife I like to get gifts taht eacj person will use and enjoy rather than look at the financial value. Good to read somethign different. Please write any soon. Your Loyal Fan.
