    Chapter Twenty-five

The following days sort of fell into the norm. They didn’t plan for a honeymoon travel for there were things to take care of, the gallery, the company, the animal rescue center, and of course, the remaining arrangements regarded Sue’s death. But time really did fly when they busied themselves in the work. Just when they both accomplished the most part of work, summer had gone, and fall came to its end.

Bette made a life-changing decision, which would affect generations that came after her. She sold Shaolin, and her relative smaller investment in HongKong and Toronto, dropped several patrons in other branches of her company, promoted several business managers to fill in the head of management position to unload her work amount, and announced that the Porter Group would not be taking individual contracts except the ones that were already in progress, bringing the business to a smaller scale and more oriented direction. There was something she learned from her chef, whom she hired years ago from a local diner in Beijing. He told her that many old, historically important restaurants or herb medication shops often had no more than two branches across the country. It was the quality, not quantity, that brought them reputation that lasted for centuries. And she had come to the important decision to make her family business a lasting, high-quality, focused reputation. She admitted that at first it seemed to lighten the weight of her job, but as the transition progress began, she realized that there were more to it than just bringing down the business scale. It was about choosing the right contracts, about delegation and re-delegation, about using people she trusted best, and about managing them from afar.

Though it might be difficult for her to not micromanage everything, and try to lay back, she was doing okay so far. Of course Melvin had raised problems, gave her a hard time about this whole reduction idea, but she held her ground and she made it clear it was what she wanted. Grandmother, suspicious at first, was able to see through her action and find the purpose in it. She thought it could actually be a good thing for her granddaughter. Every human needed to feel belong to their family. Bette was only human, and she needed her family too.
