    CHAPTER 97

“Steady on Emma “ Bette said – this was not the time or the place for an argument.
“You really had screwed me over on this – you just couldn’t stand to lose the painting – that is fucking mean you cow “
“Mom – that’s not how it happened “
Emma gave Tina a withering look “Trust you to defend her – I can see now where your loyalty is – and its not to me. Bette – you are a despicable bitch “
“No “ Bette replied -she hadn’t picked this argument but equally she was not about to shy away from it “You screwed me – this painting has nothing to do with the first one “
    “Like hell it is “
“What is this about ?” Helena asked “Emma – what’s going on ?”
“This is about me buying you something for your birthday and your so called best fucking friend ruining the surprise – well I hope you can see for yourself that she is more interested in money than friendship – you have clearly nailed your colours to Peggy’s mast Bette and taken my daughter with you “
“I don’t understand “ Helena looked between an angry Emma which she had never witnessed before and what was obviously a fired up Bette which she had seen and knew that she didn’t get angry very often. Bette was very clearly trying to keep her temper in check
“This painting was done specifically for Peggy by the same artist that did yours – the difference is that I commissioned him to add the skipper to the picture because I realised what it would mean to both Peggy and Helena. What I did not do is find out that someone else already had an agreement in place to buy the original and bribe the dealer to the sum of $3000 dollars to get her to sell the piece to you. It was your lack of ethics that has caused this to happen so do not fucking well lecture me about what I have or have not done.”
“Will someone tell me what the hell happened ?” Helena said “NOW “
“I was tipped off by my dealer “ Emma began
“YOUR dealer should be the same woman that your daughter is dating “ Rosemary said – Emma glared at her “MY dealer tipped me off about a painting of a yacht – she thought I would like it because the yacht was called the Peggy Helena. So I made a bid for it and it was accepted. I did not know that Bette had seen the same painting and wanted it for Peggy. For some reason Bette took this very badly and had THAT painting done for your mother – it rather usurps my painting which I wanted to give you for your birthday “
“You rather left out finding out that the piece had already been sold in principle and the $3000 sweetener “
“And the fact that you screwed over my partner “ Tina said – she wasn’t going to let Bette get a verbal whipping from her mother.
“Keep out of this Tina “ Emma said. That remark made Bette’s blood boil
“That comment just says it all about you – no respect for your daughter just really shows everyone that you are out after your self interests and no one else “
“You have said enough “ Melvin stepped in “Helena – don’t you think you and Emma should be going to your theatre date “
Helena didn’t move – she was obviously confused as to what was going on. She could see how angry Bette, Tina and Rosemary were and that Emma was lashing out not taking any prisoners in defending herself.

    1. I’m proud of Bette that she didn’t fight Emma, but moved away and had a fun night with her parents and Tina.

Emma showed her true personality and that is not a good one. She doesn’t make friends with how she blamed Bette and certainly not by calling her a bitch with her parents, Tina and Helena standing by.

She is an arrogant woman who cannot look beyond her own self, her own interests. She reminds me of a very spoiled child who always gets what she wants and goes crazy when it doesn’t go the way she wants. She’s been making fun of herself and I think the friendship between her and Rosemary, Melvin, and the one with her daughter has been severely damaged.

I feel sorry for Helena, she was so surprised with what happened and with Emma telling her side of the story, she doesn’t get the true story. I hope she shows that she is the adult woman she wants to be so much and also listens to Bette and Tina.

For now there are two losers, Emma and Helena.

I look forward to the trip from Bette and Tina, they deserve it and it is important to keep working on their own good relationship.

So far they know how to deal with this situation and I hope it stays that way.

      Thanks for the quick update!

    2. Bette handled the situation as well as could be expected. Emma embarrassed Helena in front of her friends and her mother, but she has yet to realize that. Helena will now hear the situation again from Emma’s point of view. It will be next week before she will be able to hear Bette’s story. She will then have to choose between her best friend of twelve years and her new budding relationship with Emma. Can Helena handle a lover who sees everything as a competition and no empathy for others. Helena has a long history of loyalty to Bette and when Bette apologized and went to bat for her and Emma’s relationship with her mother, Bette was restored for the most part as most favored friend. Emma with her behavior has started a fight in public with her friend, her lover’s daughter and was witnessed by all those people she worked with, Bette’s parents and worst of all her mother. I wouldn’t be surprised if Helena asked Emma to apologize for the disturbance she made. She may not ask her to apologize for the way she handled the acquisition of the painting nor question why she wasn’t using Bette for the transaction. But this incident foreshadows a lot of future problems between Helena and Bette and Tina. Emma has already marked Bette as an enemy and Tina as her number one supporter. Rosemary and Melvin may not be extending a whole lot of social invitations in the future. Peggy certainly will not. So this will be highly disruptive to Helen’s social circle. How will Helen respond?

Emma’s comment to Bette that she is jealous of her and Helena was just over the top projecting. Bette has done all she can to defend Emma and Helena and hopes it goes well. But she does not see the “forever” qualities she feels with Tina. So who is really the one who is jealous? Is that what this relationship is for Emma with Helena? A competition to show her daughter that she can have a wonderful relationship too? She can get a sweet, young beautiful woman with money on her arm too? Is she jealous of her daughter?

Emma is beginning to seem like she needs to get some counseling in a big way. How did Kate ever put up with her?

Thanks for this chapter….. love it.

    3. I think Bette handled the situation well. She kept her temper in check. She was right; that was not the time nor the place. Who’s really the jealous person here though? I think Emma showed her true colors here.

    4. Thanks for two chapters within two days. Nice treat for the weekend :-)

Seems like my comments on the last chapter weren’t that farfetched after all. I stand by all I said about Emma: the jealousy, the missing style and manners, the spoiled child behaviour. Emma would stop at nothing to win. Very off-putting character trait. I hope that Helena will ask Bette’s side of the story and see what damage Emma did to all of Helena’s relationships.

Hope for more Tina and Bette time in the next chapter. They seem to take a backseat in all the H + E drama.

      Looking forward to more.

    5. Well, at the risk of repeating myself, I really love this story and this partnership of Bette and Tina! Always a sucker for TiBette in partnership against the World!

Thanks for posting,so looking forward to where you are going with this. I may not like it though because I. do like Helena and wanted to like Emma.

      Stay safe and well
      SG

    6. Agree with all comments. Great story. But would love to get back to Bette and Tina. Their story seems to have taken a back seat to Helena and Emma. Now my take: If Helena breaks with Bette that will be beyond sad. Bette and Helena are closer than sisters. I stand by what I wrote before: Helena and Peggy may have a complicated relationship but they both share a powerful love for John Peabody. I simply cannot fathom Helena being anything but deeply sentimental and happy about the painting for her mother. As Bette and Tina told her – look at the painting! Look at Peggy! This was arranged by Bette for Peggy. If Helena joins in on the attack on Bette it will make no sense. Also – we don’t know what happened after Bette and Tina and Melvin and Rosemary left. Emma was worked up. Somehow I imagine or just plain hope her whiny spoiled tantrum to Helena cannot go over well. How can Emma possibly come off looking like a victim when a beautiful painting of Helena’s father now exists and hangs nearby? How can Helena not see how much the painting means to Peggy? How emotional her mother is? How much it effects her as well. So what if there are two paintings? That is a GOOD thing. How can Helena not question Emma as to why she did not hire Bette? This is a big one for me. She saw her best friend as well as Melvin and Rosemary who she adores all very angry at Emma. I hope all of this and a few choice comments from Peggy may give Helena pause. Maybe Helena does need to break free for a while but not with Emma. I was thinking that if Bette has the artist do a portrait of Kate it will mean the world to Tina and only anger Emma. What does that say?

    7. Great story! Can’t wait for the next chapter. I am with Billy, I do not think the trip will go as planned. Would not be surprised if H/E show up on T/B’s door tomorrow wanting to hash it out. No way Emma lets this simmer – she is not a simmer type of girl, she likes to be right all the time and she will want to hurt Bette more for taking the spotlight from her. Can’t wait. PPS

    8. Emma blaming Bette for the painting that included John was totally OUT of Bette’s hands as far as we know right? She didn’t know that the Artist would include him. As far as we know Bette did NOT provide any photos other than the original which did not include John.

The Artist knew Peggy & John so seems like adding him to the painting was his idea. A way of blessing Peggy. And it worked. Far as we know he was NOT told to hurry up and complete the painting prior to Helena’s bday (i.e. to steal Emma’s thunder in surprising Helena with the 30th bday gift).

I agree that Emma is DEFINITELY jealous of Tina. That she found her soulmate, 4evah love and is totally committed to a life with Bette. Tina has chosen Bette over job, money and possessions.

God I hope Tibette gets to have their exclusive, intimate weekend far away from everybody . . .

      • Bette sent the picture. She had it. But even if Bette rushed the painting for Peggy who cares? The point is that the painting includes Peggy’s deceased husband and Helena’s father. That’s all that matters. If Emma had a heart she would be happy for Helena that the memorial exists at all. She could care less about the sentimentality behind the story of the yacht. To Emma the painting is a thing – an object she can give Helena. Nothing more.
