Ashley’s cell phone was ringing. It was three in the morning. She looked down at the caller I.D. It was Spencer. “Spencer? Honey why are you calling me so late? It’s kinda hard to talk right now.”
“I know I’m sorry.” Spencer spoke through fresh tears.
“Honey, why are you crying? Is everything okay?”
“No. Why are you whispering?”
“I gotta whisper because I can’t be too loud. My girl’s in the next room.” God I wish she was you. I guess we never really moved on. “It’s really good to hear your voice Spence.”
“It’s good to hear yours too.” Spencer’s tears seemed to be ceasing.
“So what’s wrong?” Ashley tried her best to keep quiet.
“I don’t want to be here tonight Ash.”
“O-k, where do you want to be?”
There was silence on Spencer’s end until, “I dreamt of you Ash. Just a little while ago.”
Ashley smirked, “It’s funny that you’re calling me tonight about that because I dreamt of you too. Does he know that you’re talking to me?”
“No I don’t think so. Why?”
“Because we’ll start a fight.
“Does she know I’m talking to you?”
“No I don’t think she has a clue.” Sometimes I wish she was you Spence.
“Ashley.”
God, you make it hard to be faithful. Every time you say my name it sounds so sweet. “What Spence?”
“I can’t do this anymore.”
“Can’t do what?”
“Lie about everything. Ashley, when I look at him I wish he was you.”
“Spencer-“
“No Ashley, I have to say this. Every time I think of you, hear your name, speak to you, if I see you I have to control myself.”
“It’s hard to be faithful.” Ashley interrupted.
Spencer heard the words come out of Ashley’s mouth. Ashley felt the same way? “Ash, are we…”
“Feeling the same thing? Spencer every time I go to sleep I have to imagine that it’s you lying next to me.”
“What are we doing?”
“The real question is why are we staying with the people that we wish were either of us?”
