Something’s Missing – (Chapter: Spending the night with a fight)

As Spencer was looking through the pantry for some dinner, she heard the doorbell ring. She could faintly hear her mother talking to the unidentified person. “Spencer, it’s for you.” Paula shouted loud enough to be heard in the kitchen.

Spencer set down her jar of peanut butter and her package of crackers before heading out to see who it was. Chances were that it was some neighbor going out of town who would ask her to feed their pets or water their plants, sometimes both. All she ever got out of it was about ten dollars and an invite to their house anytime, which she never used. Why would she want to visit with old people she barely knew?

As Spencer rounded the corner she saw Ashley standing in her foyer looking the same way she did before they parted. She held an algebra book in her hands and looked a little nervous. It was almost cute how she looked like a lion cub in unfamiliar territory. “Hey, Ashley.” Spencer said barely being able to hide the quickened heart beat.

“I think we accidentally switched math books. I have yours and can’t find mine.” Ashley smiled. Not her famous smile where she wrinkles the skin on the bridge of her nose, but the one where her lips turn up and her eyes turn bright and if you look closely, you can see her heart beating through the smile.

“Oh, sorry, it must be in my room, just a second.” Spencer ran into her bedroom and grabbed her bag. She shifted through all of the loose papers attempting to find the algebra book. She found it and made her way down the stairs. As she neared the bottom she could see Ashley sitting on the couch talking to her mother and Ben. It looked pretty innocent and her mother wasn’t giving her the third degree like some of her other friends.

“Believe me Ashley; I have had my fair share of boyfriends as well. It’s a high school thing. You date for the fun of it.” Paula said through a smile. So that’s why she was being so nice and welcoming. Ashley said something about dating a guy indicating that she was straight. That immediately rose the meter on how much Paula liked Spencer’s new friend.
