    Hi, my name is Spencer Carlin, and I’m pretty darn nervous.

    Later on that night, my cell phone rang. I jumped towards it, thinking it might be Ashley, but it wasn’t.

    “Hey Michelle.”

    “Congratulations!!!” she exclaimed excitedly.

    “Okay, so I take it you’ve heard… why congratulations?”

    “Oh, I don’t know. I’m feeling celebratory.”

    “You’re weird,” I told her.

    “Maybe. But Ashley is coming to New York, and that’s more important!”

    “I’m so scared,” I admitted meekly. “Like… I don’t even know what to think.”

    “Well think happy thoughts, because she is ridiculously excited. I haven’t seen her like this in a very, very long time,” she explained.

    “Really?”

    “Yup. So don’t be too nervous. Whatever you’re feeling, she’s feeling it too,” she assured me.

    “What if it’s, you know, like… really uncomfortable?”

    “Has that ever been a problem for the two of you?” she asked.

    “No, but it’s been four years! I’m not quite sure how to even start.”

    “How about, ‘Hi Ashley!’”

    “Shut up!” I replied with a laugh. “I’m serious.”

    “I know, I know. Just be yourself, Spence. That’s all I can really tell you,” she said. She and Aiden really did think alike.

    “Easier said than done.”

    “Isn’t everything?” she asked rhetorically. It was so true. “Listen, I gotta split, but relax, and in case we don’t talk before Friday, have fun! Be nice, and don’t break her heart, alright?”

    “What?”

    “Bye Spencer!!”

    Don’t break her heart? What was that supposed to mean? Her heart wasn’t mine to break anymore. Besides, I think I’d done enough heartbreaking with her to last quite awhile… starting at the minute I decided to go to Nashville for college. I tried to shake the feelings of guilt from my system, but only succeeding in repressing them for the time being. I looked over at Benny, who was nonchalantly licking his private parts, and for a minute, I wished I was a dog, or some other housepet. They had it easy. They didn’t have to work, didn’t have to pay bills… they didn’t have girlfriends or boyfriends or love lives to be worried about; sex was entirely non-committal and easy to find, with no strings attached. There was always someone there to take care of them if they were sick or scared, assuming they had good owners. They could sleep all day if they wanted to, and no one would think twice about it. All they had to do was just… be. If only life was truly that simple for humans.

    2. Ok, I’m psychic. Or psycho… I’m not sure which. One of the two. Now.. whatever happens on Spencers work phone it is NOT to interrupt the two of them ok. I’ve had just about enough teasing from everyone ELSE on this darn board and… well, I start work in three hours and i’m back from holidays so a nice meet chat between Spencer and Ash could really, seriously make my day :) Aw, cmon, be a champ and don’t let me down.
