    Learning and Dreaming

    They had walked down the street to the nearest funky retro-chic restaurant they could find, completely avoiding the Starbucks’ and other franchise stores along the way. The air was warm with the bright sunshine and a comfortable breeze that came in intervals. People milled about the sidewalks along with them but she could only focus on the girl beside her.

    Spencer talked animatedly; her presence was disarming and exhilarating that was complimented by that upbeat attitude and genuine smile. ‘She walks with a straight posture but it looks so relaxed, like she’s got her own way of walking but she’s receptive to other peoples strides… wait, what the hell am I thinking about her posture for?’ Ashley had become painfully aware of how much the blonde was throwing her off of her usually sharp and sound thought process. It was unnerving, but surprisingly, she didn’t mind that much.

    When they walked into the restaurant, which was fairly busy, they pulled up a booth seat and continued the conversation. Spencer worked at a clothing store called ‘Serendipity’ and volunteered in the Big Brother program down at the Y. She had a cat named Bast, an apartment in West Hollywood, and a ‘bitchin’ jukebox from the late 1950s.

    In the time between getting decked by the door and getting to the restaurant the ice pack Ashley held to her head had already melted, but she didn’t notice. Her attention was drawn to the blonde across from her with her enchanting blue eyes and those full lips.

    “So I’m pretty much the A-typical young adult living on my own and figuring out what to do with my life; got to love the clichés. So what do you do?”

    ‘My hand is still buzzing. Huh? Did she just ask me something?’ “Oh, um. Shit, what was the question?”

    Spencer laughed a bit, smiling at her blatant absentmindedness. It made Ashley smile too. “Space cadet much?”

    “I think that door might have knocked me harder than I thought.” It was supposed to be a joke, her head was perfectly fine but the other girl’s demeanor shifted rapidly from light hearted banter to concern.
