Standing alone with her elbows on the banister, one hand holding a bottle of vodka and the other fidgeting with her hair, Shane looked out over the city, wondering how she’d ever managed to ruin her own, and the lives of some of her friends without even thinking. They had all left after the wrap party but for some reason she had returned to the place where she’d dealt the deathblow to hers and Jenny’s friendship.

    ‘You’ve broken my heart.’

She’d stood in shock after Jenny had uttered those final words to her and she’d fought off the urge to go after her, even though there was nothing she wanted more than to try to talk to her and explain to her just how sorry she was. She just didn’t think she had the right to after what she’d done.

Taking a swig off the bottle, she grimaced as the bitter liquid filled her mouth, her grip around her hair tightening for a moment as she swallowed. She leaned forward, looking down at the cliff below and flinched when she heard someone speaking next to her.

“We’re not thinking about jumping, are we?”

Shane looked up at the woman who sat to her right up on the railing, her long brown hair still in spite of the soft evening breeze. She froze for just a moment to take in her beauty – she hadn’t seen her for what felt like ages – but soon looked away to drink some more of the alcohol. She had a feeling she would need it. “No,” she muttered crankily. “If I was gonna kill myself, I’m sure I could think of a lot more creative ways than that.”

“Nice to see you too, Shane,” the woman retorted and cocked an eyebrow at her. “This is one hell of a mess you’ve made this time.”

Shane rubbed the bridge of her nose in frustration and turned to her old friend. “Why are you here? You always have to come around every time I fuck something up?”

“Well, I had to come here to stop you from making the biggest mistake of your life, so… The wedding that wasn’t, your break-up with Paige… That was nothing compared to this. You can’t just stand there and let this happen.”
