Happier Times (The Night Before) – Chapter 4

Okay make sure that everything is here by 10 tomorrow morning. The caterers are arriving at noon and the ceremony starts at 2. Dont forget the flowers, did you call Shane to remind her about them? And make sure that Dana picks up the wine and champagne. What time are you coming over tomorrow? Tina will need help making sure everything is in place so can you be over here early? Bette had been on the phone with Alice all day making sure the last minute arrangements were taken care of. Alice couldnt help but laugh as she could just imagine Bette pacing around her house trying to gain control of the situation. Bette, RELAX. We got it covered. Just sit down and take a minute to breathe okay, everything will be fine. Really. I dont have a minute Alice, Tina is coming home soon and I have to get to Kits remember.

Okay Bette, well do whatever it is youre doing right now and me and Dana will be over soon. Alice and Dana were going to keep Tina company tonight and Bette was going to spend the night at Kits. Okay, okay but I know Im forgetting something. THE RINGS! Bette, dont have a seizure okay. I have Tinas ring and Kit has yours. Im hanging up now before you have a stroke. See you soon. Bye. Bette hung up more frustrated than when she first called Alice for the tenth time that day. She began to pace back and forth more quickly as she scanned the house making sure everything was in order.

Sighing to herself Bette finally stopped pacing and sat down on the couch. The last two months had been a whirlwind as her and Tina both wrapped up major projects at their respective jobs so that they could take time to spend on the wedding. They also managed to get Tina moved in record time and Bette never realized how much stuff Tina had. The first few days living together were kind of awkward, but after about a week it felt natural. Bette loved having someone to come home to at the end of a long day and Tina took comfort in the fact that Bette was the first thing she saw in the morning and the last thing she saw at night.

Bette leaned back against the couch and closed her eyes for a second trying to drown out the pressures of the wedding that were invading her every thought. She must have fallen asleep because the next thing she heard was Tina speaking softly to her, Baby, wake up. Im home. Bette looked up at Tina and for the millionth time couldnt believe how lucky she was to have this amazing woman in her life. Bette smiled as she pulled Tina down next to her and wrapped her arms around her. Hi T, have a long day? Mmmhhmm, was the response she got as Tina let herself melt in Bettes arms.

At that moment the door opened and Alice, Shane and Dana were standing there with their arms full of stuff. As they set everything down Alice turned to the couple and said, Okay Porter, were here. Now get the ***** out. Bette laughed as she released Tina from her hold and stood up. Okay Im gone. Alice did you make sure to She was cut off by Alice who waived her hand and said, Yes dont worry, we remembered to do, get and bring everything. Now go. With that Bette planted a soft kiss on Tinas lips, walked to the bedroom to get her overnight bag and her suit for tomorrow and was out the door. Alright! Girl time alone with the bride to be! said Alice as her, Tina, Shane and Dana fell into one big laughing heap on the floor.

Bette pulled up to Kits house and sighed to herself. Of all people, she knew Kit was the one person who would be able to set her straight about tomorrow. She had been letting her nerves get the best of her in the past few days and she secretly found solace in her older sister, although she would never admit it. She got her stuff and rang the doorbell. Kit opened it with a smile and ushered her baby sister inside.

So Tina, are you excited for tomorrow? asked Dana. The girls had just finished dinner and were sitting around drinking wine and talking. No Dana shes freaked out. What do you think? responded Alice as she threw a pillow at Dana. Leave her alone Al, said Shane who was watching them from her spot on the couch. Well, yeah Dana, Im excited, and nervous, and overwhelmed and a whole bunch of other emotions that I cant think of right now. Tina was leaning against the couch near Shane and she leaned back as she continued talking, I love Bette and nothing would make me happier but marrying her seems so unreal. Why? asked Shane sitting up and getting more into the conversation. Well, I guess because mostly I never thought I would find someone like her, said Tina. Aww how cute, said Alice, So what are you guys going to do about your last names? asked Dana, who was a little unsure about the whole process. Dana didnt want to admit that she had no idea about the logistics of same ***** marriages but she wanted to know for herself because maybe one day she could have the same thing. I dont know. We never discussed it. I guess we will just keep our last names, or we could hyphenate them. I dont know, said Tina. Well in any event, Bette is one lucky woman, said Shane who gave Tina a reassuring smile. No, Im the lucky one, said Tina as she smiled broadly thinking about Bette and just how wonderful she was.

So whats up baby sister? asked Kit. Her and Bette were sitting on the couch talking. They had a quiet dinner and Kit could sense that Bette had other things on her mind. Just thinking about the wedding, replied Bette. Kit looked at her quizzically like she was trying to figure out if Bette was lying or not then decided to change the subject. So what did Melvin think about this engagement? Bette sat forward and got a sad look on her face. I dont know. I sent him an invitation but he never responded. Why do you need validation from him? You have a beautiful woman who is about to become your wife tomorrow and friends who love you. Bette looked at Kit as if she was looking at a stranger. Hes my father Kit, for better or for worse hes your father too. Melvin might be biologically connected to me, but that man has not been my father in over twenty years. Bette angrily stood up and walked over to the window. She looked outside at nothing as she said quietly, Why are you doing this Kit? Kit stood up and walked over to Bette. She wrapped her arms around her and said, Im sorry. Lets forget about him okay? Why dont you tell me whats really on your mind? Bette turned and faced Kit with a sad look on her face and as she hugged her back all she said was, Im scared.

Okay that has to be the saddest story I have ever heard. Alice was laughing so hard her side started to hurt as she was re-acting Danas story about how she tried to hit on a girl at the country club and was denied, big time. Its not funny Alice, said Dana who was extremely embarrassed and tried to hide behind a pillow. Tina pulled the pillow away from her hands and said, Its okay Dana, youll meet someone. Dont worry. Yeah and Dane, she might actually like you back, said Shane who was laughing so hard she nearly fell off the couch. Tina sat up and looked at her three friends sitting in her living room. Hey guys, seriously, guys, all three turned to look at her and after seeing the look on her face quieted down slowly. I just wanted to say thanks for being here. I really love you guys and I know Bette feels the same way. Alice looked at Dana who had a goofy smile on her face and said, We love you guys too. Youre like our family. And if anyone else was going to put up with Bettes ***** for the rest of their lives we are really glad its you. Shane, Tina and Dana laughed at this remark and the four girls came together in a hug. They continued talking and drinking and two bottles of wine later all four were asleep in the living room, as one big happy family.

Bette, you are such an amazing person and having Tina by your side only makes you that much better. You dont have anything to be scared of. Kit and Bette had been talking for the past hour about the wedding and how Bette was feeling about it. This was one of the hardest things for her to do, but Bette felt good knowing that after all these years Kit was finally able to be the sister she needed. I just dont know if I am everything that she wants and needs. What if something happens and she realizes that being with me was a mistake? What if I wake up one day and think that I want something else? Bette had been trying to rationalize her fears about marrying Tina, but no matter what she said, nothing seemed to come out right. Baby girl, you dont have anything to worry about. You and Tina have something special, everyone can see it. When she looks at you all she sees is love, and the same goes for you. Look, it aint always gonna be easy, but together you two can make it through anything. Bette looked at Kit like a child would look at its mother before going off to the first day of school. Kit could see the fear and confusion in Bettes eyes, but she could also see Bettes love for Tina in everything she did for her. Bette knew that her sister was right, there was nothing that they couldnt do if only together. Bette sighed as she said, She is everything I could have ever wanted. I love her so much Kit. I know Bette, and so does she. Bette smiled at Kit as she put her head on Kits shoulder. Kit put her arm around Bette and felt like she was lifting a huge weight off of her baby sisters shoulders. Bette closed her eyes as sleep tugged at her consciousness and as she drifted off Kits words lingered on her mind, together you two can make it through anything. Bette hoped she was right.
