The Long Road Home Chapter 18

Tina sat there looking at Bette waiting for her to acknowledge what she had just said but Bette seemed to be absorbed in her own thoughts.

Bette Tina said. Did you hear what I said?

Sorry Bette replied her voice filled with regret. I was just gathering my thoughts and trying to figure out where to begin. Its hard to find the words to tell the person you love more than anything in the world why you fucked up your lives.

I dont think it is any harder than sitting here waiting to hear those words Tina said with a hint of anger. Please just tell me why. Try to make me understand why.

Before I can answer any questions there are a few things I need to tell you about our life together. I need to tell you about some of things we were dealing with or should I say in some cases not dealing with in the past year. Remember me telling you that you had quit job so that we could try and have a baby?

I remember Tina said softly feeling slightly guilty for not telling Bette that she remembered all of it.

Well you quit your job and we waited a month or so and we started trying to have a baby. Bette said her voice filled with sadness. We had a friend who agreed to donate his sperm and we tried for 7 months to get pregnant. We had been doing the inseminations at home and finally after that 7 month we decided that we would let the doctor perform the insemination. It turned out the donors sperm had little to no mobility which explained why you hadnt gotten pregnant. We began a search of a new donor and we argued over who the new donor should be. Eventually we decided on a donor and soon you were pregnant. I remember the day you told me. It had been an awful day at work and I was such an ***** to you when I came home because of all the stress. You had prepared dinner and had set an extra place setting and placed the pregnancy test stick on the extra plate. It was one of the happiest days of my life. We were going to have a baby, the family we both wanted but it wasnt meant to be. Our baby died when you were almost 3 months along.

Tina sat there listening to Bette talk about the pregnancy and their baby boy dying and she began to silently cry.

We lost our baby Bette said quietly tears forming in her eyes. Our

Son died Tina whispered not realizing she had said it out loud.

What did you just say? Bette asked. Did you say our son? Tina?

Yes Tina replied knowing she had just let the cat out of the bag so to speak. I said our son died.

    You remember? Bette asked.

Yes Bette Tina said sadly. I remember it all. Everything except the accident, I remember being in the car but dont remember being hit.

Im glad T, but I am sad too Bette said. I know it was hard on you to not have your memories but at least you didnt have to deal with the pain of what I did. Do you think that maybe what I told you this morning triggered it?

No Tina said softly. It was before that.

When did it start to return? Bette asked.

Last night Tina said. It was sometime during the night.

Last night Bette asked. You remembered everything last night?

    Yes Tina said quietly.

So what was this morning about? Bette asked angrily as she got up off of the bed. Did you just want to see me suffer? Were you playing games with me?

No Tina said. I didnt want to play games with you. I, I

You what Bette said. You wanted to see me hurting? You wanted to punish me?

    NO! Tina cried softly.

You know what Tina, maybe it doesnt matter why you kept it from me Bette said her voice filled with anguish. Maybe I just fucked it up too much for there to be any hope for the two of us. The Tina I know would never have to hide and pretend with me. I give up.

Tina was crying upon hearing Bettes words and before she could say anything Bette turned and walked out of the bedroom. Tina stood up quickly to try and stop Bette from leaving but when she stood up the world began to spin and she had to sit back down on the bed to keep from passing out. Bette grabbed her keys and hopped in to her car and backed out of the driveway. She drove to the end of the block and pulled over to the side of the road and cried. Bette sat there crying for a while and trying to figure out what she should do. She knew that she had let her emotions get the better of her in that last few moments with Tina. She asked her self if she was really prepared to give up on her relationship with Tina. Could she really walk away from the love of her life without a fight? She made up her mind, started her car and pulled back on to the road headed towards the only place she felt like she should go.

Tina was lying on her side in the middle of the bed crying and rubbing her head when Bette walked back in to the bedroom. Tina did not hear Bette walk back in the bedroom because she was crying. Bette walked to the bed and lay down behind Tina and put her arm around her and pulled her close to her.

Dont cry baby Bette said softly. Im sorry I walked out like that. Please dont cry

Bettes words only seemed to make Tina cry harder so Bette just held her saying nothing.

Bette Tina finally said. I didnt want you to go. I tried to stop you from leaving, but I got so dizzy when I stood up I had to sit down to keep from passing out. I thought it was stress but I think that something may be wrong.

What is wrong baby? Bette asked her voice filled with concern.

My head has been hurting since last night and now I am dizzy Tina replied.

I think I should take you to the hospital and have you checked out. Bette said.

No Tina said. I will go tomorrow if it isnt better.

T Bette said. I dont think we should wait until tomorrow.

We still need to talk. Tina said.

I know we do but this could have something to do with the head injury you received. Bette said. I dont think we should wait.

Okay Tina said reluctantly. Promise we will talk about this soon. We have some major decisions to make.

I promise Bette said as she got up from the bed and helped Tina up.

Tina kind of staggered as she stood up because of the dizziness so Bette reached out and steadied her. She walked Tina in to the living room and sat her down on the sofa so she could find Julie to tell her they were going to the hospital. Bette found Julie in her room and told her that she was going to take Tina to the hospital emergency room to get her checked out.

Im going with you Julie said gathering up her purse and putting on her shoes.

I figured you would want to go Bette said. Tina wanted to wait until tomorrow but I insisted she go tonight.

I told you I was worried about her Julie said. I am glad you are making her go.

They got Tina loaded up in the car and headed towards the hospital. Bette started to park the car in the ambulance drive way so she could run in and get a wheelchair but Tina refused to ride in a wheelchair.

Im not an invalid Tina said. I can walk.

Tina you can hardly stand up straight from the dizziness Bette said.

I will feel foolish riding in one of those things Tina said. People that are really sick or hurt need them. I dont

Bette laughed softly. I know baby, but why dont you just humor me on this.

Tina looked at Bette and she knew from the look in Bettes eyes that she may as well give in because Bette would not stop until she was in that wheelchair being pushed inside the emergency room. Bette and Tina got Tina signed in so she could be seen while Julie waited in the waiting area.

This is probably just a waste of time Tina said. I didnt eat today so that is why I got dizzy.

Lets just get it checked out Bette said.

Soon they were called back and the doctor examined Tina while he asked questions about what her symptoms were. They told him about her having a previous head injury due to an accident and he asked for detailed information about her injuries. He said that he would like to order several different tests to see what was going on. When he walked out of the room Bette followed him to ask if he had any idea what was going on. He explained that sometimes after a head injury that people can have headaches, dizziness and in some cases their personality could even change. He also said that there was a possibility that it could be a chronic subdural haematoma or a small build up of fluid on her brain. He told Bette that the tests would indicate if she had fluid on her brain.

Bette felt like she had been hit in the stomach. She thought they were past all of this and here they were back in the hospital. She pasted a smile back on her face and went back in the room with Tina and Julie while they waited for them to come and take Tina for her tests.

What did he say? Tina asked.

He just really needs to see these test results before he can figure out what is going on. Bette said.

They came to draw some blood from Tina and soon she was taken in for a cat scan. Bette paced the floor while Julie sat in the chair waiting for Tina to return. It seemed like it had been hours by the time they brought Tina back to her room in the emergency room. Bette smiled at Tina when they wheeled her back in to the room.

Hey baby Bette said. How are you doing?

Wished theyd give me something for this headache Tina said.

Let me see if I can find the doctor and see if he will give you something for the pain Bette said.

Bette went out of Tinas room to find a nurse or a doctor and she had just stepped in to the hall when the doctor walked up.

I think we have found the problem he said.
