If it is meant to be…Chapter 16

Tina had arrived at the airport an hour before Bette was scheduled to land. She had been too excited to wait around the house, convincing herself that she was leaving so early because, you never knew how long it would take to find a short-term parking space at Sea-Tac. She was now sitting down by baggage claim…waiting.

22 years…Tina closed her eyes and allowed herself to wander back through her memories, returning not to the end of her relationship with Bette…but to the beginning.

She had been just as surprised by her attraction to Bette, as Eric had been, when she explained to him why she had to end their relationship. At first he had been stunned by her admission, then as his ego took over, he was angry, but in the end, he had been genuinely hurt. Tina had been one of the best relationships that he had been in, and he didn’t want it to end, but no matter how badly Tina felt about hurting Eric’s feelings, it had to…Tina was so drawn to the gorgeous and dynamic gallery owner, she didn’t have a choice but to go to her, to surrender to her heart’s need to love, and be loved by this woman.

At the time she met Bette, Tina felt like her life was totally on track. She had started at Alfaville, working part time while she was still in college, and had worked her way up fairly quickly. Tina knew part of that was because the company was still small, so they all considered themselves to be part of a family, however Tina also knew that she was good at what she did, and that they didn’t promote her just because it was easier than going outside the company. She had earned every promotion, and because of that, was one of the youngest development executives in the business. Then Bette came into her life. My God…she was like a force of nature, a gift from the heavens…a woman whose love was so powerful…so intense, that at times you had to brace yourself for the impact of it. Tina had thrived on that intensity, and her reward, was a joining of two people that had produced more than she’d ever dreamed possible.

Tina didn’t allow her mind to veer off down the path leading to memories of the slow destruction that had taken place that last year or two. She knew that they had both made decisions every day…big and small, intentional or not, that led to their break up. After all these years, she knew what they had done wrong…she laughed to herself…’hindsight is twenty-twenty.’ So, she didn’t want to think about that now, she wanted to just sit, and for the first time in years, allow herself to remember how she had been loved those first five years….

She remembered how over the top she was when they had first started dating. How just hearing Bette’s voice on the phone could make her stomach feel fluttery and her cheeks turn bright red…even if Bette was just calling to ask Tina to stop at the store for toiletries, or coffee, or whatever. It didn’t matter…it had always taken Tina about five minutes to return to her body after just hearing that voice over phone.

She remembered how Bette would always take care of her when she was sick. When it came to work, Tina was just like Bette, a hard driving, A personality, and would refuse to stay home, even if she had a temperature. On those days, Bette would personally deliver to her office, a carton of matzo ball soup with chicken, from Matza Mamma’s, knowing that always made Tina feel better. Then when Tina would get home, Bette would make sure to be waiting there with medicine, tea, a hot bath, or a warm comforter…whatever Tina needed. Tina smiled, thinking back to when Bette would force her to get into bed, or to lay on the couch, but would surround her with lavender candles to help with the headaches, magazines to read, a movie to watch, ginger ale to drink…and a little dinner bell that she could ring anytime if she needed anything else.

She remembered the conversations they would share…hours upon hours of discussing everything from world politics to what color to paint the guest bedroom…from what they wanted for their future, to what they wanted for dinner that night. They would share their most intimate thoughts and fears with each other, because at that time, Bette had been so emotionally available to her…at that time, Bette had been…everything to her.

She remembered their four day weekends, spent driving up the coast…well, sometimes they made it further than others. Sometimes it was all they could do to get to Santa Barbara, before they would have to stop and get a hotel room. They would take long walks on the beach, have romantic dinners, either in their room, or at a local restaurant…and always, they would physically love each other, over and over again…reconnecting in a way that sometimes their day to day schedules didn’t allow for.

    She remembered…

Tina had been so caught up in her thoughts, that she didn’t notice that the time for Bette’s plane to arrive had come and gone, and that there was a group of people gathering around the baggage carousel where she was sitting. Bette had walked over, seeing Tina sitting there with her eyes closed and a smile on her face. She smiled herself, wondering where Tina’s thoughts were. She bent down and whispered in Tina’s ear.

“What are you thinking about.” The voice was soft and sensual. It was the voice Tina had been hearing in her head for the last hour.

Tina’s eyes were still closed, unsure if the voice was real, or part of her memories. “I was thinking how wonderful it always felt to be in your arms.”

“Well, what are you waiting for?”

Tina’s eyes flew open, knowing the voice was real…knowing that after 15 years…a marriage and three children, that she was finally going to get her second chance to feel what it’s like to be loved by this woman. She stood up with tears in her eyes, feeling her heart open up, and did what she had been waiting so long for…she felt Bette’s arms…felt Bette’s love engulfing her once again.
