Changing Places – Chapter 24
The water was beating down on Bette. She felt the warm water soothing her, allowing her to relax, even if it was just for a short while. Her mind had been in over drive since she had gotten up with a start this morning. All of a sudden the enormity of bringing a new life into this crazy world was sinking in. How would she raise this child to be strong and independent yet caring and loving? She did not want this child, her child, Tinas child to be an emotional cripple like her. Sure she had made a world of progress these last months but she still struggled every day to be emotionally open. Yes, it was getting easier but it was still so hard. She didnt want to make the mistakes that her father had made with her but that was all she knew. Perhaps that knowledge would be enough to help her avoid the same pitfalls. At least she could now admit to herself and others the damage that her father had brought upon her. This new life growing inside her brought her so much joy and hope for the future. She couldnt wait to hold her, protect her, and teach her. Yet, this was all becoming so overwhelming. She was beginning to doubt her ability to be a good mother but knew that all mothers to be had the same self doubts. She needed to talk to Tina about this, share her feelings, and get things in the open.
Bette was startled out of her reverie by Tina who had stepped into the bathroom to get Bette out of the shower.
Tina: Hey baby, you know youve been in there forever. Is everything all right?
Bette reached over and turned off the water.
Bette: Im fine T, coming out now.
Tina wrapped Bette in a towel and began to dry her off.
Tina: Mmmm, you smell so good. I love you Bette.
Bette: I love you too Tina and if you dont stop drying me off we will never get to the stores today.
Tina smiled: Would that be so bad? We could go back to bed and cuddle.
Bette: Cuddle? I know what you have in mind and it has nothing to do with cuddling.
Tina: Sure it does, at least at first.
Tina sensed that Bette was still crazed about the baby stuff so she relented in her seduction.
Tina: Okay, let me jump in the shower and you go get dressed. We can leave after breakfast.
Tina turned on the water and let it beat down upon her. She was worried about Bette. It seemed to her that the reality of being a mother was hitting Bette like a ton of bricks. She knew from her own pregnancy, that the thought of being a good mother and raising a happy, well adjusted child was something that was constantly on her mind. She had self doubt and was just plain nervous in general. She and Bette had never spoken about any of this. Bette had opened up to her so much on so many levels yet they had never spoken about the baby and how their lives would change. She determined that before the day was over she would bring the subject up and see if Bette would open up and share her thoughts and feelings. She quickly finished her shower and threw on a pair of shorts and t-shirt. When she got to the kitchen Bette had already put the coffee on and was busy cooking the two of them eggs.
Tina: I dont think I will ever get use to the sight of you cooking in the kitchen and not burning anything!
Bette: Yeah you will. It might take 5 or 10 years, but it will happen Im sure.
Tina: 5 or 10 years. I like the sound of that.
Bette: Me too. Come here so I can give you a kiss and thank you for being a part of my life again.
Tina walked over and hugged Tina; Bette pulled away just enough to give Tina a long passionate kiss.
Bette: Hey, youre distracting me. Sit down or I will end up burning breakfast.
Bette made up two plates of eggs, potatoes and bacon and set them down on the table. She poured herself and Tina coffee and sat down to eat.
Both Tina and Bette said in unison: There is something I want to talk to you about.
They both laughed, and then each said in unison again: You go first.
Tina: Okay, really, you go first.
Bette: Im scared Tina. What was I thinking when I decided to have a baby. How can I possibly be a good mother? Look at my background, Melvin sucked at being a dad and my mom was not present in my life. I dont have a good role model. Im an emotional cripple and I dont want to pass that onto to our child.
Tina: I had a feeling that all of this was weighing heavy on you babe. You know that all mothers to be go through these self doubts. I had them.
Bette: Oh God T. Im such an idiot. Here I am rambling on worrying about myself, and I never really thought about what you must be feeling. Is it hard for you? I mean here I am about to have this baby, our baby, but it must bring back bad memories for you. I know I think about it all the time.
Tina: Look Bette, Im not going to lie. You being pregnant does bring back some tough times, but I like to look at it from a different perspective. You are giving me an opportunity to be a mom too and that is the greatest gift you could ever give me. Im worried about raising this child too but I know without a doubt that we will be the best moms we could possibly be. Sure well make mistakes, but well learn from them and do better the next time. Its not about being perfect from the start, and its not about being in control because once this baby comes into our lives we will never be in control again. She will run our lives until she is old enough to walk out the front door on her own and begin her own life. All we can do is be there for her, guide her, love her, and never judge her.
Bette: Sounds like a tall order to me but Im glad youll be by my side so we can learn together.
Tina: You know Bette, you sell yourself short. You have changed so very much, and emotionally you are much healthier than you know. I wasnt sure you would open up to me today. I knew something was bothering you and was going to ask but I didnt have to. You came to me and opened up all on your own. Youre going to be great with this baby. She will feel your love from the moment she is born.
Bette: Our love T, she will feel our love

Chasemenow, this is one of my favorite stories. I like how you let Bette and Tina “grow” and “learn” about themselves and each other. Despite the saying “all good things must come to an end”, I wish story doesn’t have to end. Thank you for sharing your gift of words and story with me, us.
