If it is meant to be…Chapter 26
“Tina, this is perfect! I can’t believe you put all this together, plus took a shower, AND drove back and forth between the hotel and your house, all in two hours.” The two women were relaxing on a blanket on the beach, leaning up against a sun bleached log, munching on sandwiches, potato salad, fruits, cheeses, and a bottle of St. Michelle wine, all of which Tina had packed into a cooler for them.
“Bette, you would be amazed how organized you become when you have three children. That, and you learn early on to take really fast showers, and to always keep the house stocked with food!”
Bette looked at the feast in front of her and gave Tina an appreciative nod while piling another fork full of potato salad into her mouth. “Well, major kudos to the mother, the chef and the chauffeur. Thanks Tina, for doing all this.” Bette put her food down and lifted her face up to the sun. “God, it’s beautiful here. It’s easy to see how this place lures so many people in…teases them with this gorgeous weather. I mean, who wouldn’t want to live here, if this is what you get to look forward to every summer?”
Tina smiled at Bette, admiring her beauty, as her eyes took in the shape of her face, her long sleek neck…Tina didn’t realized that she was holding her breath, relishing this moment with Bette. Finally, she released the air that had been locked in her throat, with a sigh that sounded so content, that Bette slowly turned her head toward Tina and opened her eyes, smiling. “What was that for?”
Tina, smiled and took a sip of her wine…her eyes never leaving Bette’s. “Just enjoying you, enjoying this moment…grateful beyond words to even be sitting here with you. Bette…I still have a hard time sometimes wrapping my brain around the fact that it has been 15 years since we broke up.” She looked out at the sparkling blue water of Puget Sound. “When I try to think about how long ago it feels like…” She shook her head. “I don’t know. There are days when it feels like it is so fresh in my memory…and then there are days when it seems like it happened in another life…a previous life.” Tina looked over at Bette. “Baby, do you still believe in reincarnation?”
Bette furrowed her eyebrows at Tina. “Yes, I do. Why?”
“Well, I was thinking about Nica. About how much you loved her, and about how much she loved you. Then, I was thinking about how much you and I love each other.”
Bette couldn’t help but smile at the serious, contemplative look on Tina’s face. “That’s a whole lot of thinking Tina. When did you have time to do that?”
Tina reached over and swatted Bette’s arm, laughing. “Be nice…I think I might have had a break through. Do you want me to tell you about it?”
It was Bette’s turn to be serious. She was enjoying the day with Tina so much, and since she wasn’t sure where Tina was going to go with this…she didn’t know if she wanted to hear it. Her guilt was locked away at the moment, and she didn’t want it breaking out and spoiling this time. But, since Tina had obviously taken the time to think about her and Nica’s relationship, and it was clear she wanted to help, Bette resigned herself to the fact that the least she could do is listen. She shifted her position on the blanket, bringing her legs up and curling them off to the side, and then refilled both of their wine glasses. “Yes, T…go ahead…tell me about it.”
Tina wiggled on the blanket, nestling down, getting totally comfortable. “Well, they say that with each life that we live, we keep meeting the same people, over and over again. The difference is, that maybe the person who is your mother in this life, was your best friend in a past life….or your spouse in a past life is your brother in this life. So, I was thinking that if that is the case…then how can we have just one soul mate? I mean, if you meet someone in this life and you think they are your soul mate, what if in your next life, that person is your daughter, or your son? How does that work? If you believe that you are going to love this person forever and ever…what happens in the afterlife when the 10 other people who were your soul mates in previous life’s are waiting for you? Who is your true soul mate?” Tina looked at Bette to make sure she was following her. Bette was sipping her wine, looking out over the water, waiting for Tina to continue. “So here’s my thought. What if our soul actually splits itself off? Part of your soul is here with you now, living this life…and part of it is with your soul mates from previous life’s.” Tina took a deep breath. “I think, we have many different soul mates that we then get to spend forever with…not just one. I think that you and I are soul mates…but Baby…I think that you and Nica are as well. You were the love of Nica’s life, and I can see, I can feel how much you loved her…love her still. I think that when you and I die, that part of your soul will be with me, and part of it will get to be with Nica as well.” Tina stopped and took a big swallow from her wine, hoping that Bette was understanding what she was saying. She didn’t want Bette to feel guilt about Nica, because she believed that when they died, their souls would meet again.
Bette just sat there, looking out at the water, watching a sail boat gliding with the wind, making its way up to Elliott Bay. Tina’s words were echoing in her head, rolling around. And as they rolled, Bette could feel a minuscule amount of hope, growing with each pass around her brain. She felt guilt, because her love for Tina was so overwhelming, that she worried that it was going to somehow negate the incredible love she had shared with Nica. Bette didn’t know if what Tina had said was true or not…and she would probably need her to repeat parts of it, but at that moment, she felt hope…hope that maybe she could live the rest of her life loving Tina, and still not let go of the love she felt for Nica. She also wanted to believe that she could give Tina all the love she had…not having to hold back, because of the love she still felt for her lost partner.
Tina was watching Bette. She could see Bette working away, methodically picking through everything that Tina had said. She suppressed a giggle, thinking she really could almost see the screws turning in there.
After close to five full minutes of silence, Bette looked over at Tina. She knew that Tina’s thoughts had not freed her from all her guilt, but as she sat there, breathing in the person she wanted to spend the rest of this life with, she felt some of it lift out of her and float away in the salt air.
One lone tear gradually made its way down her cheek, and as it dropped onto the blanket, she reached out and pulled Tina into her arms, whispering, “thank you.”

Well, I totally believe in reincarnation and can totally see where Tina is coming from. I like it a lot…maybe, it’s a NW thing (just kidding). Seriously, I could see Tina having that kind of conversation, given the setup you provided–one’s past lives could have several soulmates for different reason appealing to different facets of a soul. I dug it!
Interesting explanation!! I’ve never heard the idea of soul mates to that extent before. Thanks for giving me something to chew on. Also, thanks for sharing one of your cherished places with us in your story!!
i totally get what youre saying about soul mates. i like that you went that way.
Interesting theory.Whatever works to rid of Bette’s quilt will do for me.Tina is trying big time.
What an interesting concept. I believe in reincarnation, but did not know about meeting the same people. Something for me to chew on. Great story. Thanks for writing and sharing it.
Very interesting way to look at things. Hopefully Bette will accept this as a true possiblity.
I love this story seahurst please post soon, it is really captivating
I just am amazed on how senstative you are with this subject matter. It is a subject that one adapts with and hopes that we do meet up with a loved one or ones in another life. It is so difficult to think that we will never hear laughter or feel their touch or too see a wonderful smile of joy from them again. So you allowing your story as a vehicle to help deal with such a senstative subject. Brought the subject to light and are allowing the readers to think and to contemplate on how one feels with the subject. P.S. I loved the poem by carolann It was so right on with this subject. I will be waiting for the next chapter and can’t wait to see how Bette & Tina resolve or adapt to Bettes guilt and some of Tinas to continue with their relatonship. Thanks so much for this endering love story.
This chapter opened up a door that has been closed for some time. I want to share this with you for this chapter has showned me that others perhaaps hope and believe that we will meet up with our love ones again.

Maybe Tina is a vehicle in Bette’s life to help her move on past the pain of Nica’a loss, and vice-versa. Catalysts for changing the course of their futures. Thanks.
gorgeous…
Great chapter. I suppose Bette just have to realize that she did love Nica with all her heart and she did gave herself to her. Seeing that Loving Tina a lot has really nothing to do with not loving Nica. Let’s just say that she’s lucky to have met Tina again and have a second chance.
Love your imagination, Seahurst. We are all part of the one, its time for Bette to explore that.
You put alot of thought into that I beleieve you might have something there. lease continue I am enjoying the care you are taking with there emotions… Post soon.
That was very deep and extremely sweet! Great job.
Beautiful Sea…very well written.
totally interesting theory…and an Amazing chapter…well the whole story is so so sweet…thanks
Good stuff woman, just reading my favs. these days, and you are one so keep me happy.
I love this story so much, Seahurst!!! I can’t wait for them to finally be together. Post soon Please!
beautifully written and thought provoking. i am with bette. thank-you.
very nice! i love this story, but it is killin me that bette is still holding onto this guilt, when all i want is for them to officially hook the flip up, so the love can flow and see how they work things out with the kids and stuff! great story, keep it coming!
crystal sense seahurst. wonderful
Interesting concept there. On a separate note – a thought popped in my head while I was reading; it may have been addressed by others or even yourself earlier…Bette has a grown daughter. Has she thought about having to raise three more children? Just a thought that you will probably address in more detail soon. I’m sure it would not stop B&T from re-uniting, but it could cause some anxiousness on Bette’s part.
Well, anyway, another great chapter, Seahurst!!
Well put, what a beautiful mind you must have to have imagined such a beautiful explanation of love lost and found. Can’t wait to read how their love keeps growing back.
The reincarnation angle is a stretch for me, but if it gets them back together…let the re-cycling begin.
BEAUTIFUL!!!!
your writing is extremely insightful, i’m reading ‘if it’s meant to be’, lovely stuff……just read chpt26..afterlife/soulmates stuff…also in my culture we believe those who have ‘gone on’ send people/experiences to us as we need them in this physical plane..so imo Nica hooked Tina and Bette up again, I mean what are the odds that T would be in NY and go to Bette’s gallery on that day when Bette was there…serendipity!!!!keep writing you have talent…
