Chapter 6: Embarrassment

Shane was still too shocked to say anything. All she could do was stare at Alex who was sitting opposite to her. After dropping her little bombshell Alex had driven straight back to the hotel. She had hoped to tell Shane there where she could explain the situation but she had been so insistent not leaving her a choice. The whole ride back Shane had stared in front of her without saying a word making Alex wonder what she was thinking. Unfortunately she wasnt always good at reading peoples minds and Shanes face had given nothing away. When they had reached her hotel room Shane had just walked to the couch in the living area and had just settled there still not saying a word. For a moment Alex had considered trying to get her to talk, but then she had thought if Shane was anything like her she would need time to think and eventually would come to her. So she had gone to the bedroom and had placed the gun in the nightstand. Not long after Shane had come into the bedroom.

So, care on filling me in?, Shane asked turning Alex around to face her. As Alex closed the drawer of the nightstand, Shane saw the gun her friend had handed her, but she decided now was not the time to get into that. For a moment Alex looked at her. Her hand reached out and she caressed Shanes cheek. Dyou know why I can sometimes read your mind?. Shane was taken aback a bit. But then she realized this was Alex way of easing into a conversation. She had done it many times before. Shane just hadnt noticed it before. So she decided to go along. Why?, she asked as Alex led her to the bed and they both sat down. Shane was finding it hard now to focus on the conversation fully aware of where she was and who with. And very aware of Alex hands holding her arm.

Because you and I, were the same. We come from the same place. We share the same past. Alex saw the skeptical look on Shanes face and continued still holding Shanes arm worried that if she didnt, Shane might run off. Alex had invaded Shanes privacy in a way she would never tolerate anyone invading hers. Before helping her shed done a background check on her. Not as thorough as could be, but thorough enough to make sure Shane was on the level and not someone looking to sue her for a quick buck. Abandoned at birth. Foster homes. Orphanage. The streets. Shane looked at Alex incredulously. You mean you, she couldnt even finish the sentence, I dont believe it. Believe it, Alex chuckled, If theres anyone who gets it, its me. The only difference between you and me is that eventually I got adopted by a filthy rich family. She paused and then said softly, And you ended up on the strip. Suddenly Shane felt embarrassed. Embarrassed that this woman knew what she had done. She tried to get up but Alex grip on her arm kept her on the bed. She tried to pull free when Alex left hand grabbed her neck. Please, dont feel ashamed. Like I said if anyone understands I do. She looked into Shanes eyes pleadingly and Shane saw something there that surprised her. She truly did see understanding and caring. Alex smiled and got up and started pacing up and down. I know what its like to have to do certain, she paused, things to survive. Things you might not be too proud of, but things you dont have to be ashamed of either. She sat back down on the bed and took hold of Shanes hand. Her thumb forming circles on the back of Shanes hand. Suddenly Shanes focus disappeared again as she felt Alex caress her hand slowly. Alex thumb touching her lightly and a sigh escaped her lips. Im sorry, Alex said bringing Shane back to reality. For what?. For invading your privacy like that. I know if it was me Id be ready to kick someones *****, she said casting a glance Shanes way. Yeah, well dude, I might have if Id thought I could win, Shane said with a lopsided grin making Alex break into laughter. Somehow she didnt feel so terrible about Alex knowing her past. She felt even closer to her now. Alex liked her, she knew that much. And Alex liked her knowing what kind of life she had led. This made her realize she barely knew anything about this young gorgeous doctor at all. Ex-doctor.

Alex was surprised at how well Shane had taken it. She was starting to like this shaggy-haired hairdresser more and more. Watching Shane grin like that all she wanted to do was lean forward and take possession of those lips. Caress them. Lick them. Tease them Alex leaned forward when Shane suddenly said, What about Marina? And this sister of hers?. Alex sighed inwardly. Saved by the mysterious brunette and she chuckled to herself. She got up and walked to her suitcase and pulled out a stack of papers her cousin Eric had provided her with. How much do you know about your friend?, she asked Shane.

Shane was about to respond when she realized she really didnt know that much about Marina. Shes a foreigner. She runs the Planet. And she was in a relationship for about seven years with a woman named Francesca. Thats it? You dont know where shes from? Who her family is? Anything?, Alex asked not really that surprised. From what she had read about Marina she hadnt expected her to confide in anyone. Perhaps this Francesca knew some things the others didnt. She had, however, thought that these women who called themselves Marinas friends would have known a little bit more than they did. Shane was about to get angry, but then again Alex did have a point. How long had they known Marina? And what did they really know about Marina? So she just sat back against the headboard and then shrugged.

Alex saw Shane lying back on her bed and she felt the desire building in her again. She wanted to just walk over and take her Get a grip, she chided herself and walked to the bed sitting opposite Shane. Ok, your friend Marina I believe, is exactly that. Your friend. A regular person trying to live her life as normally as possible, she paused. Her family, however, is not as regular. Have you ever heard of the Cabals?, she asked Shane who just shook her head. Well, I assume youve heard of the mafia. The Cabals are like the mafia only they go back many, many centuries. The primary goal of the Cabals is money. Making it. Stealing it. It doesnt matter. They also seek power but only because power gets them money. There are only a few Cabal families in the world. Their money and power is passed on from one generation to the next. As the times have moved on so have the Cabals. They have their hands in pretty much anything nasty and profitable. Drugs. Weapons. Racketeering. Extortion. Prostitution. You name it, there will be a Cabal somewhere in the mix. Alex looked at Shane who was still listening intently. This next bit was going to be hard. Alex swallowed hard. Your friend Marina is a Cabal. Are you trying to say Marina is in the mob?, Shane exclaimed. Alex shook her head. First of all, the Cabals are not the mob. Theyre much worse. Second of all, I dont think Marina is actively involved with her family. From what Ive heard and read, and she waved at the stack of papers on the bed, Marina stepped out shortly after her eighteenth birthday. Like I said, money and power of the Cabals is hereditary. Each generation is expected to follow in their parents footsteps. Theoretically it is, however, a choice. On occasion an offspring can decide to live their own life. Thats what Marina did. She rejected her familys business and moved to America to live her own life. And they just let her?, Shane asked thinking this story was way too wild to be true. At first they thought it was just a phase. And that eventually Marina would not be able to live without the money and power that comes with being a Cabal. And now?. I dont know really. All I know is that they left her alone. Until of course her suicide attempt.

Shane was too shocked to respond. She tried to take everything in. Their Marina was in the mob. No something much worse. Alex looked at Shane in concern. She knew it wasnt easy to hear all these things about a friend. It wasnt so much knowing where Marina came from. But that she hadnt told them about it. But Alex knew what it was like not being able to force yourself to tell someone the bad things about yourself. Finally Shane looked up. So what? They just took her?, she asked. It looks that way, Alex replied, Marina left LA on a flight to London with her sister Angelina. So shes with her sister?, Shane asked more to herself than to Alex. And shes so dangerous we need a gun?. Alex took a deep breath. Shed only told Shane half the story. Like I said there are only a few Cabal families in the world. Sometimes they work together, sometimes they compete. Most of the time they leave each other alone. Its not like the mob where everyone is trying to eliminate each other. They are, however, much worse than the mob. They have connections everywhere from CEOs to Supreme Court judges. You cross a Cabal and youre history one way or another. Alex paused trying to get the facts straight in her own head. The most powerful Cabal family are the Ferrers, causing Shane to stare at her in surprise. Alex continued, The heads of the household are Angel and Roberta Ferrer. Theyre based in Florence and pull all the strings from there. They have four children. The youngest Franco is in Brazil. Hes mainly into drugs and guns. The eldest Paolo is his fathers right hand and is at the moment in Florence being trained on the ins and outs of the business. And Marinas sister Angelina is based right here in London. Her main hobbies are smuggling and prostitution. They all own a lot of real estate. Clubs, restaurants, warehouses, stores. You name it theyve got it. And then theres Marina. The one who got away, Shane said softly.

Yes, Alex sighed, And theyre not going to let her go without a fight now they have her back. Dyou think Marina will want to come back with us?, Shane asked not sure she wanted to hear Alex answer. For a moment Alex thought then she replied, I think it depends on how far in she is, she paused, and how much her friendship with all of you means to her. Im assuming that after her relationship with your friend, she was pretty upset. People are very impressionable at moments like that. Im sure her sister showing up and showing her the affection she didnt get elsewhere, meant a lot to her. How dangerous are these people?, Shane asked reaching for Alex hand. Alex took Shanes hand in hers. Dangerous enough for me to want to send you back to LA and come running after you, she said looking serious. Then seeing Shanes beautiful face she smiled. Shane looked so worried. Alex wanted to comfort so she leaned forward and gave her a quick kiss on the lips. Pulling back their eyes locked. Before she knew what she was doing she leaned in again and this time Shane kissed her back. Alex felt the tip of Shanes tongue licking her lower lip and she opened her mouth thrusting her tongue into Shanes mouth. She shifted her body moving on top of Shane. And her hands started exploring Shanes body. She felt Shanes hands moving from her back to her *****. Alex broke their kiss and looked deep into Shanes eyes drowning in the desire in them.

Shane felt the desire building in her. For the first time in months she finally felt something for another person. She could feel the wetness growing as her mouth went back to devour Alex. Alex hands moved to her shirt buttons and started removing her shirt. As Alex hand cupped her breast a moan escaped Shanes lips. Shanes hands were moving all over Alex body when suddenly there was a big crash in the living area and the door to the bedroom was kicked open
