Carving Paths
Ignorance Within the Truth
Part Three
Panting, her eyes searching, trying to find the safe haven. It was pitch dark, the smoke rose into the night, she stood there trembling and terrified that she wouldnt survive. Something crept up on her, bolting she ran hard as she could. Stumbling a little, exhausted, trying to catch a breath as she continued to run.
Suddenly she stopped, not wanting to jump into the water. She found herself on the pier, breathing harder. Her eyes shifted around, seeing shadows getting closer and closer. Frustrated, she told herself it wont give up, having no choice as she started to cry as she gave up, resigning to her fate.
She cried out, as the shadows pushed her into the water. Falling headfirst into ice-cold water, she came up gasping. But feeling someones hand pushing her head, trying to hold her under water. Shane fought as she tried to reach for the air, her body started to wear itself out; she pushed her arm up weakly to make the last effort to fight, as the edge of her consciousness barely held on. But her eyes finally closed in defeat. Her lungs filled with water, as she floated on the water, billowing and her consciousness faded into darkness.
” No, No!!” Shane abruptly sat up, panting. Her body covered with perspiration, Shane kicked away the bed sheet, not caring about the companion beside her. She walked over to the window, opened the window, taking in the fresh air. Shane stood there, leaning on the window ledge, her eyes closed as the moonlight shone into the room, leaving behind the shadows weaving across the room.

Yawning, she stretched. Feeling her fingers all cramped and she sat back in her chair, grimacing, as she hasnt taken a shower in a week. Noticing the first time, seeing the food remain untouched. Feeling guilty about ignoring Tim for a week, determined to make it up to him.
Looking up from the computer, her body jerked in reaction, startled when she saw Marina standing there, wrinkling her nose in distaste.
“Marina,” Jenny said coldly.
Marina wryly smiled, that was what she was expecting from Jenny. Marina stood there coolly and reserved, waiting for Jenny to retaliate against her.
“What are you doing out of the hospital?” Jenny avoided her eyes, as she picked up the clothes to be washed, putting them into the laundry basket.
“I was there long enough, they kept me under the observation. I wanted to see you, to apologize for everything,” Marina waited for Jennys response but none came.
“The way I found you gave me the nightmares. I couldnt even forget. I didnt save you. Tim did,” Jennys stormy eyes held back her anger, not wanting to look at Marina.
“Okay, I understand,” Marina said quietly, giving Jenny some time and not wanting to make things more worse.
Jennys heart broke when Marina shut the door between them. Dammit, it shouldnt hurt so much; Jenny shut her eyes as she thought that Marina and her were over, but no. There are so much unresolved issues between them. Her writing is constant solace, less complicated than her life really is.

“The game is simple. We each ask the questions, starting easy then it gets more personal. If you prefer not to answer, I win and you buy me the most expensive dinner.” Jack nudged her, asking if she agree.
“Okay. Sounds fair.” Alice leaned back, resting her head on back of Jacks shoulder, loving the feel of his body. Jack grinned as Alice snuggled against him.
“The first one, is your last name Pieszecki?” Jack asked teasingly.
“Ow!” His expression darkens in pain, rubbing his arm when Alice pinched his arm.
“Not that simple, Ill go first. How big is your family?”
“I have five brothers,” Jack said, a wide grin spreading across his face as Alice looked on in horror.
“Im the only child.” Alice thought she sounds boring compared to Jack.
“Good. I wouldnt have to worry about impressing anyone except your parents,” Jack responded, raising his eyebrow. Her mind racing, it seems that Jack is interested in a long-term relationship.
“Jack. This game is over. You win.” Feeling self-conscious, she stood up, needing to distance herself from him. This was not good idea. Needing Jack to leave.
“Whats wrong, Alice? Did I said something wrong?” Jack asked bewildered.
“Nothing. We should keep things between us at professional level. Nothing personal to you.” Alice pulled him off the couch and dragged him by arm, pushing him to the door. ” Good night. I will see you tomorrow.” She slammed the door to Jacks confused face.
She sank down to the floor, full of insecurities, knowing she did what was right for Jack. She is unstable and not capable of having a relationship with someone. Wanting Jack to find someone who is less complicated and will make him happy, not her
Jack stared at the door, feeling hurt but determined to get the bottom of this. Jack is not giving up. He turned around, he admitted to himself that he is attracted to her and he will bring their working relationship into more personal area. He brooded over, trying to figure out what he said that set Alice off as he walked off into the night.

Tina looked up instinctively, seeing Bette offering the coffee and a doughnut in her hand. Smiling at the gesture of friendship, Tina took them.
Bette sat down next to her, bringing a newspaper, as they sat in comfortable silence, feeling like its old times.
Feeling Bettes gaze on her, ” What?”
“Why are you dressed up today,” Bette questioned. Looking over Tinas dressy black pants with open collared blue long sleeved shirt.
“Job interview,” Tina answered nonchalantly.
Feeling the pride washing over her, “Im glad. I hope you will get it. Im sure you will. After all youre the hot commodity.”
Tina blushed, “Thanks.” As they felt self-conscious, turning back to they were doing.
Marina entered into Planet, causing the whisperings increase and Tina waved her over. Marina knew she is the news all over the ***** community. She wished that sometimes they minded their own business, Marina kissed Tina on her cheek in greeting and hugged Bette.
“Hello. How are you both doing? Still trying to have a baby?” Marina asked unknowingly, causing some discomfort over the table, Tina coughed.
“Marina. Tina and me have broken up few weeks ago. Make the long story short, we have decided to become friends,” Bette said softly a moment later.
Curious, Marina wondered what happened to their solid relationship, some people are mysterious. Marina leaned back, she couldnt understand some people, and she thought she knew Tina and Bette. But they blindsided her, their relationship is over and they are being friends. She will never understand how something strong and solid can break easily.
“Im sorry. I made an inappropriate comment,” Marina responded embarrassed.
Bette waved that away, “Everyone doesnt really know what goes on in other relationships except for themselves.” Seeing Kit coming in, knowing she has an important meeting to attend to. Bette stood up, ” I have to go. I will see you guys around.” Walking to Kit, seeing Tina behind Bette sitting, Kit waved happily. Kit liked seeing Tina and Bette together, even though they have decided to make some amends. Kit and Bette left Planet.
Tina put her hand over Marinas and asked gently, “Are you okay?”
Marina shrugged, “Jenny is not too happy to see me and shes pushing me away. Im not surprised.”
“Just hang in there. Being there for Jenny and letting her know that shes important to you. Its worth fighting for.”
Marina brought Tinas hand to her lips and kissed it in gratitude.
“After all, no matter how difficult life is and knowing something is waiting for you to find it. That is what makes it interesting,” Tina said absently as lost in her thoughts, making Marina feel better.
“Nothing comes easy but I understand what you meant.” Marina stood up and Tina followed, both needing to leave. They hugged in goodbye, heading into different directions in their lives but always find their way back.

Chattering filled the air, Tonya and Dana looked over the menus, deciding what they wanted to order.
“My sweet cakes, we need to start planning our wedding,” Tonya not noticing Danas clenched jaw as she continued, “we need to invite all the journalists, famous people that you know, tennis acquaintances, and your sponsor. We need all the publicity we can get.”
Tonya continued to ramble off her thoughts and ideas while Dana tuned her out, nodding as she went along with whatever Tonya wanted. Feeling miserable, she couldnt hurt Tonya by telling her the truth. She felt guilty that she has been stringing Tonya along when she felt alone. Tonya has been there when her cat died and she is very supportive of her tennis career.
Setting down the steaming plates filled with delicious aroma, the waiter smiled as he bowed, ” The compliments of the sous-chef.” Dana felt appreciated, couldnt hold back a grin from appearing as she dug in.
Tonya sat back in her chair, her suspicions rising, feeling strong jealously and possessive coursing through her. Im not losing Dana ever, no matter what, Tonya looked over to the open window of the kitchen, her cold gaze remain there, lost in her thoughts.

Wearing black tank top, black leather pants, and black wristband, Shane approached the bar, asking for the usual. The crowd remained large, at 3 am, wanting to use their energy as they danced to the beat of the music.
But Shane is here for a different reason which is she cant sleep anymore. Her nightmares continued to plague her, the only way she felt safe is staying awake and the drugs also help to keep her nightmares at bay and keeping her energy level up. In a way, shes killing her body. Good, Shane thought, better than facing her demons and her old feelings.
Leaning back against the bar, someone came up next to her, Shane looked over her shoulder, making a face.
Chuckling, ” Carmen. Came to bother me again.” Carmen shook her head.
“Nope. Im asking you to dance, after all we are friendly strangers,” Carmen held her hand out, offering. Shane looked at her hand, making no deal out of it, as she put her hand on it, shrugged as she thought, why not.
Falling into the crowd, dancing as they enjoyed listening to music. Shane closed her eyes as their bodies moved in rhyme, feeling content and peaceful with Carmen. Feeling disconcerted, she never felt that way with anyone else. Frowning as she tried to put some distance between them, Carmen held on her as she pulled her closer, putting her arm around Shanes lower back.
Carmen whispered into Shanes ear, “Who are you, Shane?” Shanes eyes became blank and cold at the same time. Carmen felt a chill running through her spine, as Shane with no smile said emotionlessly, “Just no one.” Carmen wondered what she meant by that.
Jostled by someone behind, she let her arm go and turned around to tell her off, but she paused realizing that Shane slipped out of her grasp. Disappointed, Carmen watched Shane picked up some girl and flirting as she forgot about Carmen. Feeling envy coursing through her as the pain stabbed in her heart, wondering why Shane wouldnt view her as a girl who she can pick up to sleep with. Carmen, her eyes closed, continued to dance as the words from the song ran through her mind, determined to at least to be part of Shanes life, either a friend or a lover.
