If it is meant to be…Chapter 51

Seeing the tears running down her youngest daughter’s face, Tina hurried over to where Alex was sitting and knelt down in front of her.

“Oh Baby…,” she whispered, while reaching up and wiping the tears from her cheeks. “What’s the matter? Why are you crying?”

“Do you…have to …date someone?” Alex was sniffling, her words coming out in between sobs. “Why can’t you…just stay…the way you are?”

“Honey, I’m not going anywhere…but why don’t you want me to have a relationship with Bette?”

Alex glanced at her dad, who was standing on the other side of the campfire, with one arm around Dani’s shoulders, and still holding onto Kathy with his other hand. Then she looked back at her Mom, who was kneeling in front of her. She whispered, not wanting the rest of the family to hear her.

“Because, what if Dad wants to come back home? That’s his bedroom too. If someone else is there, where is he going to sleep?”

Tina’s eyes filled with tears, her heart breaking. Alex had been hit the hardest by the divorce, not understanding why her father was moving out of the house. Tina and Dan had both spent time with her individually and together, trying to explain to her that even though they lived separately, and that Dan now had a new wife, that they both loved her so much, and they were still a family…a very strong family.

“Oh Baby, we’ve told you before…you know your father is not coming back to our house to live. He has a new home with Kathy now, and for all of you to stay at, as well. Baby…you have to let go of the idea that he is coming back to our house to live. He’s not coming back…but Honey…that doesn’t mean you can’t see him whenever you want.” Tina’s tears overflowed as she was saying this, as she could clearly see the sadness etched on her daughter’s face.

Alex sat there, crying. She heard what her Mom said, but there was still a part of her that just wanted to have everything the way it was before. She liked Kathy…she liked her a lot, but just wanted her dad around every day…living with them. She saw her mom’s tears, and thought she was crying because she was also sad that her dad wasn’t coming home.

“See Mom…you want him to come back too. I know you do.” Her voice rose a little and sounded more like a whine now. “Why don’t you just ask him…ask him to come home, Mom? Maybe if you did, he will come back.” She looked over at her siblings and her Dad, all of whom were now staring at her, after hearing her last request. “Right Daddy, you’ll come home…if she just asks?”

Dan wasn’t sure what to do, or what he could say that would take away his daughter’s pain. He walked over and knelt down next to Tina and pulled Alex into his arms, and as softly as he could, he said…

“No Honey…I am not coming back to your Mom’s house to live. I have my own house now, where I live with Kathy. You know all this…we have talked about this before. But, you need to know, that even if your Mother and I are living in different houses, that we love you very much and we are still a family.” Dan stopped for a moment, lifting Alex’s chin so she was looking in his eyes. “Honey, you know I still love your Mother…I will always love her, but I am with Kathy now, and we are very happy together. Don’t you want your Mom to be happy like that too?”

Alex slowly nodded her head. She did want to Mom to be happy…she just wanted her to be happy with her dad. “Yes.”

“Well, from the sounds of it, Bette makes your Mom very happy, so I think we should all be happy for her…Ok?”

Again, Alex just nodded her head, then just looked down at the ground. “Yes.” She wanted to say more. There were other reasons she didn’t want her Mom to be with that woman, but she kept her mouth shut. It seemed like no one else felt like her, so she wasn’t going to say anything…yet.

It was Tina’s turn to reach over and hold her daughter. “It will be Ok Alex…I promise you…everything will turn out just the way it’s supposed to.” She kissed her on the cheek. “I love you so much…do you know that?”

Alex stuck with what she’d been doing and nodded her head, whispering one simple word…”yes.” But, she didn’t know if she believed her mother. She didn’t know if she believed that everything would be Ok, because she wasn’t sure if she believed that her Mom being with another woman was right.

    1. the Porter charmi will work on alex… is going to be that way, isnt it??? Bette is…. well, bette is bette… allow alex to have a little faith on her…

    2. That was so brilliantly written Sea! I do not have children either but no matter if we’re children or adults THIS is what is commonly felt by many small children…unbelievable lady…bravo!!!

    3. Sea this story is filled with so much truth and it’s extremely well written. THANK YOU.

I’m curious to learn about Alex’s other reservations regarding her mom’s “new” romance. I hope that Tina and Bette are given an opportunity to let her know everything will be okay. Great story!

    4. Seahurst… personally I think making Alex react to Tina’s news the way she did ads more flavor and twist to the whole story making it more realistic seeing that very often we see when a couple seek to go separate ways divorce are always hardest on the younger kids. I’m looking forward to see how this turn of event will unfold. Good job here and thanks for posting a new chapter.

    5. I hope Alex realizes what an amazing person Bette is and wants for her mother to be happy with her. Kind of hard for an eight-year-old but I’m sure she’ll get there eventually. Awesome job, Sea!! Very realistic!

    6. Divorce is so haard on a child, since she knows her momand dad still loves each other, just can’t understand in love with each other. I believe her other problem is that its a woman that she is in love with. Childre hear so much in school and has a lot of peer presser today. We are all counting on Bette to solve this, It was a wonderful story,You hit her feeling very well,Thanks

    7. Great chapter Sea! Yes – I can see an eight year old reacting just like that. My son is going to be 13 next month – and still doesn’t understand all of this “gay” stuff. He’s still waiting for me to bring a dad home for him. I guess I could… and put him outside in one of the dog houses! Anyway – can’t wait for the next chapter.

    8. Children always want and need for their parents to come back togeather. Especially if they saw no aggressive, mental or physical, or verbal assaults. This relationship that you are portraying to us, as well as what the children witnessed and subjected to was a very loving and neutering family unit. So Alex doesn’t understand why her parents needed to get a divorce. Excellent chapter. Catch the next one when you give it to us. Thanks

    9. great chapter. i think the porter charm is gonna have to come in here, the porter charm might be milaine though and not bette. that would be a cute way to go. thank you for a wonderful chapter as always, i love your story and can’t wait for the next chapter. :)

    10. Excellent does even begin to say how great this is! I think you have Alex and her reaction down perfect. Sea, I would love to see this as a book, I would definately buy it.

    11. So, you’re an amazing writer. You have an excellent story going on. Please, post at least one more chapter before the week gets too busy. I don’t know if I can wait until next weekend. PLEASE?!

    12. I think this feels very real–hopefully Alex’s brother and sister will be able to help her through. Or maybe Milainie will be a good source of support for her… Thanks so much for this update!

    13. Seahurst…love the Alex angst. We knew everything couldn’t be that smooth. Looking forward to see how Alex will get through this.

      another fantastic chapter!

    14. Come on, Sea. Really. Couldn’t you just write a shitty chapter just once, so we’d know you were human?

      No?

Yeah. I didn’t think so either. :P Great job, us usual. One of my favorites and one of the best on here. :D

    15. WOW…this is really kinda heartbreaking. I’m lovin’ it because anything that can evoke emotion is well done. Well done, Sea. I’m riveted, so post soon!!!!

    16. hey there- just catching up. as usual, very much enjoyed and agree that the angst caused by Alex’s response to Tina’s news was not only an interesting twist in the story, but very very believable. looking for more…

    17. i have been working hard trying to catch up on the stories. this is usually one of the ones i leave until last when i am only a day or two behind because i always like to save the best ones for last.
i love your stories sea, and this one is just so emotionally satisfying without having the emotional destruction first that is in so many of the other stories, including the ones i write.
reading these last few chapters has been so uplifting, seeing a flame that was re-ignited being built so well without being extinguished by all the outside influences that could douse that flame.
i knew dan would come around, only because tina couldn’t have been that far off in her choice of a husband. he had to be a decent guy who would be able to deal without trying to punish. the one that surprised me was dani. i would have thought with her being older, that she would have felt more betrayed by her mother who basically took her “hero” from. dani could have also felt that her mother was the “reason” bette had shown any interest in her “artistic talents”.
am anxiously awaiting to hear the other reasons alex has for not wanting her mom to be with bette.
sorry for the long comment but it is a compilation of many chapter’s comments. love your story. thanks!
