Once Upon a Time – Chapter 13
The year is 2009, 5 years after Bette and Tinas breakup
The next morning after the pool party Bette found herself lying in bed listening to Alexis on the baby monitor. It was early, around 6:30 but Alexis had been up for a good half hour. Bette loved spending time playing with Alexis in the morning. She got out of bed and walked quietly into the babys room. Alexis was busy playing with her burpy and didnt sense Bette staring down at here. Bette watched as her daughter waved her hands up and down, stopping to drop the burpy and clap hands. She was such a happy baby and Bette wondered how she had gotten so lucky. She stood watching a few minutes longer, her chest aching from the love she felt for her daughter and wondered if Alexis knew just how much Bette loved her. Just then Alexis turned her head and saw Bette. She squealed with delight and lifted her arms up, signaling to Bette that she wanted to be picked up. Bette lowered her face so that she was within an inch of Alexis.
Good morning Lexie! Do you want uppies?
Alexis lifted her arms up and down again and let out another squeal. Bette took that as a yes and lifted her daughter up, placing her in the crook of her left arm. Alexis leaned over Bettes shoulder and wrapped her tiny hands around Bettes neck. Bette smiled and held her daughter tightly. Bette walked back into her bedroom and placed Alexis on the bed and then Bette joined her, laying on her right side close to Alexis. Alexis watched Bette intently, as if she was seeing her for the first time, and rolled over slightly to her left so she could touch Bettes face with her right hand. Alexis explored Bettes face, poking her fingers in to Bettes mouth first.
Mouth, mommies mouth. Alexis laughed and she moved her hand to Bettes nose, gripping it tightly. Bette breathed in and out and Alexiss eyes went wide. She let go of her grip.
Mommies nose. I need to breath Alexis so dont hold so tight. Alexis lay there quietly with her fingers by Bettes left nostril. Bette didnt move wanting to see what Alexis would do. She pushed her right index finger into Bettes nose.
Hey Lexie that tickles and Bette reached over to tickle Lexis under her arms. Lexie started giggling and it was infectious. Bette started too and soon the two of them were giggling and Bette was rolling back and forth in bed bringing Alexis along for the ride. Just then Jake came running into the room.
Hi mommy, is it time for breakfast yet? Im hungry.
Good morning Jake, say hello to Alexis and then Ill make you both breakfast. Do you want to help?
Can I mommy? I want to scramble the eggs. He ran over to the bed and jumped on, landing on the other side of Alexis.
Morning Lexie. What do you want to do today? Its Sunday and we get to play with mommy all day.
I thought wed go to the park for a while this morning and then come back and go swimming. How does that sound?
Okay. Are we going to see Maddie and her mommy today?
I dont think so baby. Youre stuck with just me today Jake.
Thats okay mommy. Ill see her tomorrow when nanny Carol takes me to the park.
All right little man, lets get breakfast started.
Jake jumped out of bed and ran into the kitchen with Bette not far behind holding Alexis. She placed Alexis in her highchair and gave her a few toys to play with. Alexis immediately started to bang the plastic green ring(her favorite) onto the tray while she kept up a private conversation of goo goo ga ga with herself. Bette retrieved 4 eggs from the refrigerator while Jake got the mixing bowl out. He watched as Bette broke the eggs into the bowl and grabbed the metal whisk so he would be ready when Bette gave him the go ahead. Bette finished breaking the eggs into the bowl and handed it to Jake who expertly used the whisk to mix the eggs. Once Bette was comfortable that he was okay, she turned to put the bread in the toaster and then turned her attention to making oatmeal for Alexis. Once the milk was heated she mixed it with the oatmeal and sat down in front of Alexis. She put the bowl down and turned for split second to get the plastic bib that Alexis wore when eating. When she turned back Alexis had already stuck her hand in the bowl and was pulling it towards her.
Bette calmly said No Alexis, we dont play with our food. Alexis looked at her and Bette swore that Alexis knew she had been caught red-handed.
Mommy, the eggs are done getting beat up. Are you going to make them?
Give me 5 minutes to feed Alexis. Why dont you turn the tv on.
Bette proceeded to feed Alexis. Alexis was hungry so there would not be a need for singing and cajoling to get her to open her mouth wide. She finished the oatmeal quickly and then had half a jar of applesauce.
Good girl Lexie! You ate like a big girl today. Clap hands for Lexie.
As Bette clapped her hands together Lexie did the same and Bette couldnt contain the smile on her face. She leaned in to give Alexis a kiss and whispered in her ear. I love you Alexis. Mommy loves you.
Bette picked Alexis toys off the floor and gave them back to her daughter. She then lit the stove and started to cook the eggs.
Jake, come in and put the toaster on for me, breakfast is almost ready.
Jake came in and pushed the lever to start the toaster. He stood by and watched Bette cook the eggs, making sure he kept a careful distance away from the stove. Bette had made sure he understood how dangerous the stove was.
Okay little man, grab 2 forks from the drawer and a butter knife and go sit down.
She put the eggs on separate plates and gave each of them 2 slices of toast.
This is good mommy. I love Sunday mornings!
Me too Jake, me too. Finish up and then we can go to the park. It looks like its going to be a beautiful day.

*long sigh* I love Bette as a mom. I love the kids as kids. I love the kids as Bette’s kids. :D I just love this story. Zoe and Madison were cranking up the angst and this chapter just soothed me like nothing else. Excellent job, chase!!! 5 stars!
I always look for your new postings. I’m never disappointed. Love it.
I just love Bette as a parent. She certainly has mellowed out. I’m looking forward to the next chapter. I’ll try to write a longer story. This week has been really tough I had to write a piece that I am contributing to, and getting ready for the Fall Finals(I can’t believe is only 3 weeks away) so I’m stretched pretty thin. But I will try my best.
Love Bette as a Mom,she is so sweet and gentle with the children. Hope Tina in at the park.
