Thank god for her brigade training Tina swerved to miss the car like it was second nature. Like she had done thousands of times before in the fire truck. She didnt even think about it. She was too upset to even yell at the driver of the other car. She was nearly home and couldnt wait to fall into Bettes arms.

A thought then just dawned on her. What if Bettes not alone?

Tina pulled up at Bettes apartment and her worst fears were realized. She saw an unfamiliar car in Bettes driveway.

*****. Tina thought. I guess Im too late. Tears began to stream down her cheeks. She wasnt sure if she should go knock or just go home?

She knew Bette meant too much to her. She had to know for sure.

She needed Bette, if Bette still wanted her. She needed to explain, but right now she just needed to feel wanted, loved and safe and the only person in the world capable of doing that for her was Bette.

Bette was pissed that Tina left. She felt like she didnt matter to Tina and that hurt like *****.
Maybe Im making a fool of myself. Bette thought. Maybe Im the only one falling, maybe its just a fling for Tina. All these thoughts were racing through her head, her heart breaking a little more with every thought. Just when we get somewhere, something always happens, maybe its just not meant to be. she sighed.


Alice had come over to take Bette out. Bette changed her mind; she was not in the mood.
Bette just wanted to wallow for a while, decide what she wanted to do. Alice tried to find out what had happened but saw the look on Bettes face and decided to leave it alone, for now anyway! she thought. Alice had left her car at Bettes and got Shane to pick her up.

Just as Bette was drifting of to sleep she heard a loud knock on the door.

She got up, put on her robe and made her way to the door. She saw it was Tina and dejectedly opened the door
Bette: Tina, just go home, what are you

Tina looked up at Bette.
Bette then saw Tinas face.

Tina looked as pale as a ghost. Her blonde locks of hair were all over the place some stuck to her forehead from dry sweat. Her face was stained with tears and dirt. She still had her uniform on, even her fire jacket. She looked like she was about to colapse.

Anger quickly turned to concern for Bette. Tee baby, whats wrong? Whats happened? Are you ok?

Tina: (hesitantly)Bette, Im sorry if Im interrupting anything.. I just needed to see you. I needed you to hold me. thats if you still want me?
Tina began to sob uncontrollably.

Bette took Tina in her arms and was so concerned getting Tina inside and sat down; she didnt hear the last statement Tina made.
Bette got Tina over to the couch and just wrapped her in a bear hug and didnt say anything. She thought it best to just let Tina get it all out.
Tina felt so safe in Bettes arms. Like the whole world just went away.

But Bette hadnt said a word to her Tina thought, needing reassurance that Bette still wanted her. And when she didnt get it, she thought that her fears were coming true and it was too late.
Bette is just feeling sorry for me, comforting me, she really doesnt want me, who could blame her after what I did, running out on her like that Tina thought regaining some composure at the realization.
She was not going to stay in Bettes arms out of pity. no way. no matter how safe she felt. Tina broke the embrace.

Tina: (regretfully)Thanks for everything. I hope you have a happy life Bette.
Tina got up and walked towards the front door.

Bette: What are you talking about Tina?*****. Now where are you going?
Bette was starting to feel the anger surfacing again.

Tina turned around disheartened. I saw the car outside Bette. Youd better get back to your guest. I know you dont want me around if you got someone else here. I just had to see you. Dont worry I wont bother you again Tinas heart was breaking right in front of Bettes eyes.

Bette: (feeling hurt) Hold on.. Thats my friend Alices car she left it here, shes coming to get it later. Do you really think I would want someone else after what we almost shared tonight, Tee?

Tina: (relieved) Well when you said..

Bette cut Tina off with a gentle kiss. They both looked into each others eyes.

Bette: I know what I said and Im sorry. I regretted saying that as soon as I said it. I was just frustrated Tee, and I was. I am incredibly hurt because it seems to me that you mean much more to me, than I do to you? Tears started to well up in Bettes eyes, threatening to spill.

Tina: I never meant for you to feel like that baby. You. us it means everything to me. Tina mustered up all her strength and pulled Bette into her, giving her a warm embrace.

Bette: Then why Tee, why did you leave?

Tina looked right into Bettes eyes and sighed, I didnt realize what I did until it was too lateuntil I left. For 5 years Bette, I have lived and breathed this job. Its my life. If I were needed I would never hesitate to go. Its a hard habit to break, when you dont realize what youre doing. The mere mention of making a difference and Im out the door, in my own little world. But Bette I realized something tonight. This job, what I do, its not my whole life anymore. Youus. this, what we have, thats what really counts. I got caught up in my own little world again and it never occurred to me how much it mustve hurt you to think that you didnt matter to me, but let me assure you babe, you matter to me more than youll ever know. Tina leaned in and planted a soft kiss on Bettes lips.

Bette smiled into the kiss. She could feel Tinas tears returning, streaming down her face, stopping where their lips met.

Bette realized there was something more bothering Tina. After all what was she doing on her doorstep after midnight, in this state? Bette had never seen this vulnerable side of Tina before. She didnt like seeing Tina so distraught, her instincts to take care of Tina took over.

Bette carried Tina over to the couch, and held her close in her arms while she cried.
Now Tina knew she was really safe in Bettes arms and she let herself go. She never trusted anyone enough to do that before. She cried until she couldnt cry any more.

Once the crying had subsided Bette asked: Tee, you know Im here if you want to talk about it. Im a great listener you know and I dont like seeing you this upset.

Tina:(just above a whisper) A little boy lost his mum tonight Bette. I tried, we tried but we couldnt save her. I hate that part of my job!! Tina put her head down and started crying again.

Bette put her hand on Tinas chin and slowly lifted her head up so their eyes met, Tee, Im sure you did everything you could baby, it was just her time.

Tina didnt know how it was possible to feel incredibly happy and sad at the same time.

Bette: I got and idea Tee, How about a bathIll run you a nice hot bath and you can relax and get cleaned up.

Tina: (sniffing) That.. Soundsreallygood.. Thank you baby. Snuggling her body into Bettes warm embrace.

Bette went and ran Tina a nice hot bubble bath and got out a pair of boxer shorts and a singlet for her to change into.

Bette helped Tina get undressed and get in the bath; she then went back out into the lounge room. Now was not the time for promiscuity, Tina needed Bette to take care of her and Bette had every intention of doing just that. Everything else could wait.

Tina soaked in the bath and tried to compose herself and come to terms with all that happened during the night. Bette was incredible she thought. Even though I hurt her and left like I did she still gave me comfort and understanding without question. How did I get so lucky? Tina thought.

A while later Tina finished her bath and changed into the boxers and singlet. She was feeling a little better but a wave of exhaustion was now sweeping over her body. It had been a long night. She walked into the lounge room finding Bette sitting on couch just looking over at her with concern in her eyes.

Bette: Are you feeling any better baby? motioning for Tina to come over and sit with her.

Tina didnt say a word. She walked over to Bette and started kissing her passionately, forcefully; trying to show Bette all of what she was feeling, believing words werent enough.

There is no way Bette was going to take advantage of Tina in this state. No matter how much she was dying to make love to Tina. Their first time wasnt going to be like this.
Bette pulled away and looked Tina in the eyes.

Tina: Tee, baby as much as I want you, and you know that I do, what you need right now is comfort, not ***** and I want to give that to you. Tina at this point was too emotionally exhausted to even think. She took hold of Bettes hand and they walked to the bedroom in each others arms.

Sleep came almost instantaneously for both women.


The sun streamed through the window. It was early Sunday morning and Bette was the first one to wake. She just lay in her bed watching Tina sleeping peacefully still in her arms. Her mind wandered back to last night. She knew her and Tina had taken a big step in their relationship. She knew Tina was in it for the long haul. Tina trusted her enough to be completely vulnerable with her. The realization bought a smile to Bettes face. She was amazed at the new things she was learning about Tina every day and with each new day Tina never ceased to amaze her.

Tina began to stir from her slumber. Bette reached over and placed her hand on Tinas cheek.

Tina felt the warm touch and opened her eyes.

Tina: (smiling)Good morning babe.

Bette: Good morning Tee, how are you feeling this morning? Bette gave Tina a gentle kiss on the lips.

Tina: Better now, sorry I spun out on you last night. Thank you so much for taking care of me.

Tina feeling a lot better after a good nights sleep, jumped on top of Bette and looked deep into her eyes. She could feel the desire she felt last night quickly resurfacing.

Bette saw that desire in Tinas eyes.

Bette: (surprised)Are you sure youre up for this now baby?

Tina: (forcefully)Just shut up Bette and kiss me.
