What Was I Thinking? Chapter Eight
I knock on her door timidly, I’m so afraid of what she is going to think of me now. She has made her fair share of mistakes in life, but I was always chastising her for it. Always on my high horse, thinking I was the better half.
She opens the door slowly, peaking around the corner to see who it is. When she sees me she smiles wide and opens her arms. “Hey Baby Girl! I was going to call you to tell you how proud I am! I wanted to say something at opening night but I couldn’t find you. Where’d you run off to? Have some important business to attend to?” She takes me in her arms and gives me a tight hug.
“Not exactly Kit.” She lets go of me and we walk into her apartment. I take a seat on her couch as she closes the door.
“Hey what’s wrong?” She asks as she sits down next to me. “Shouldn’t you be happy and all proud of yourself?”
“No. Actually I’m angry and disappointed with myself.”
“Bette, what’s going on?” Kit asks with concern in her tone.
I bow my head and tears burn a trailway down my cheek. “Tina left me.” I whisper, yet it feels as if the words are echoing loudly throughout the room.
“What?” Kit is obviously stunned, and before I can tell her the whole story she begins to go on a tirade. “How could she leave you? After everything the two of you shared? How could she walk away from seven years of love! You two had something rare, how the ***** could she mess that up?! My goodness, what the ***** is she thinking? I just don’t understand how…”
“KIT! Stop blasting Tina, it was my fault!” The tears are flowing freely now, I am powerless to stop them. I put my head in my hands and sob, and Kit puts and arm around me for comfort.
“Shh. It’s okay, it’s okay. Bette, I’m sorry but I don’t understand. Why did Tina leave you?” Her voice is soothing, and it warms my heart how supportive of me she is being.
I look up at her and wipe away a few tears. “I had an affair.” Regret stings my heart as the words part from my lips. I see Kit’s expression change from concern to shock in a matter of seconds.
“Oh no, Bette…” She sighs, “Why? Don’t you love Tina anymore?”
“Of course I do!” Surprised she would think otherwise. The question is justified though.
“Then what in the ***** were you thinking Bette? An affair? Jesus girl…I love you and I know I can’t judge you considering the mistakes I’ve made…but how the ***** did things become so bad between you and Tina that you fucked around on her?”
“I don’t know Kit! I just don’t know…there’s just so much that wasn’t right and so I did something horrible instead of trying to fix things. I even wrote her a letter trying to tell her exactly what I feel. In retrospect a letter seems kind of cheesy, but she just wouldn’t listen to me!”
“If things were reversed, do you think you would want to listen to what she had to say?”
“No, probably not. But Kit, when I went to find her to give it to her she was. . . she was…”
“She was what Bette?” Kit expression has turned back to concern, which I find easier to talk to.
“She was kissing someone else. Intimately.” I mope and look at Kit hoping for answers. Answers to everything, anything, and nothing.
“I’m sorry. She’s probably just acting on her anger.”
“Then I got home and a waitress from a bar I went to last night left a message and…”
“You didn’t call her back did you?!” Kit snapped.
“No.” I answer defensively. “I thought that probably wouldn’t have helped matters. Oh Kit, what am I suppose to do now?”
“Do you want her back?”
“More than anything in the world.” I answer sadly.
“Then fight for her until she forgives you.” Kit responds in a tone as if saying I should already know that what I should do. “What did you do with the letter?” She adds.
“Good question.” I try to replay things in my head from when I left with the letter to when I saw Tina kissing that woman. “I know I had it in my hands when I walked into The Planet, and I don’t have it now, so I guess I dropped it.”
“Well I guess you’re just going to have to get Tina to listen to you so you can just tell her in person than.” Kit smiles. She wraps her arms around me to give me another hug and when she lets go she says “It’s going to be okay Bette. And you know I will be here for you.”
“Thank you Kit, and you know I’ll always be here for you too.” I smile though my eyes are swollen and red. I begin to gain back my composure, I stand up and shake off the tears I just cried.
“Thank you Bette. Are you going somewhere?” Kit raises an eyebrow at me.
I nod and begin to walk towards the door and Kit follows suit.
“And where are you going?” She asks as she opens the door and stands by it while I look at her from the hallway.
“To find my beautiful wife. We have A LOT to talk about.”
