It’s a Thin Line: Alice and Dana

That was stupid. Alice couldnt believe shed actually gone ahead with it. She flipped on the lights in her apartment as her head continued to spin. What next. Shell never choose me. Why would she? I can still taste her. I shouldnt have left. I had to. Her tunnel vision was clearly a result of the evenings events, she thought shed never be able to look at Dana again, she was afraid and vulnerable, not something she was used to. A faint sound managed to break through the madness and chatter that echoed between her ears. She was startled by the sight of Tina slumped over on her couch. This cant be good. After holding Tina and finally deciphering what the problem was the noise in Alices head grew even louder and was accompanied by a deafening pounding. The walls of Tinas life had collapsed because of another woman trespasses. And, that very same night, Alices path had led her right through the heart of someone elses relationship. Alice knew that her decision to be honest with Dana had not been easy. For weeks shed watched Dana and had eventually seen her with new eyes. The way she held her fork, how she sang along with the radio (with a surprising natural ability and heartfelt intensity), and the way her eyes lit up every time she laughed. Alice had realized how Dana made her feel. She felt like she had a purpose with Dana. She was responsible for making Dana laugh, for feeding her advice, for being sure she was safe from herself and the outside world. Suddenly her role as best friend seemed inadequate compared to all she wanted to offer. Its a thin line, between friendship and love. Alice wasnt nave. She knew that they loved each other, a love that is eternal and special, and only understood by those involved. But, maybe she had been hindering the potential of their love. Maybe this love was more than just supportive and comforting hugs. Alice knew that many times she had instinctively gone to kiss Dana, but somehow had averted her intentions at the last possible moment. What time is it? Alice woke up on the couch with Tina curled in a ball on her lap. Alices arms were sore from holding Tina tightly, she held them together so they could feel each others heartbeats, to know they were still alive. The sun was up, Alice knew that much. Suddenly she had a flash back to the night before. How was she supposed to go back to the way things were. She had kissed Dana, and then ran away, with no explanation (although she suspected Dana had some idea about her general intentions of the night before). Okay time for a plan. She couldnt be the other woman in Dana and Tonyas relationship. She had been brave enough to show Dana how she felt, if there was going to be a future for them, the next move was up to Dana. Alice would simple go on with life and wait to see if Dana reciprocated. Alice realized the world was in limbo. Stuck somewhere between yesterday and tomorrow. The phone rang, and Alices heart leaped into her throat.. thump, thump, thump Hello Hi Dana? Yeah, hi Al Okay pretend everything is normal Hey Dane, whats goin on? Suddenly Dana cant remember why she called. During the last few hours she couldnt think of anything but Alice. Shed picked the phone up a dozen times, but could never dial the last number. She wanted to tell her how much she loved her. How right it felt to be in her arms. How she would abandon Tonya at that very moment if she knew Alice felt the same way she did. Shed finally done it, shed dialed the number, and now was afraid to say anything at all, for fear of what would come out of her fragile lips. Um, Al Dont you think we should talk about last night? Dana, look, Im really sorry. I dont know what I was thinking. I know youre happy with Tonya, and I just wasnt myself last night. I hope I didnt upset you. Dana thought to herself Upset me? Um you turned my world upside down. Ive loved you for ever and a day, and never in my life thought you could love me. Oh, hey Al, its okay. I mean, if youre okay. Yeah, okay? Um sure Im okay. No problem. In fact, lets meet up later. Well just catch up, and Ive got some news I want to tell you. But, Im gonna go now Dane. Okay then. Ill see you later thought. Ill swing by on my way home. Okay Bye Al. ***** Alice thought. She blew it. Why was it so hard to be honest with someone that you knew so well. Its just Dana. Shes your best friend, you cant lie to her. But what if you ruin it? Shell never speak to you again. Its over. It was a stupid fantasy. No one can have it all.
