It’s a Thin Line: Alice and Dana (3)
Dana was beside herself. It was an odd mixture of excitement, anticipation, and fear. Tonya was going to be miserable to deal with. But, thank god she had come to her senses. What in Gods name were you thinking? she asked herself Clearly I wasnt! The breakup with Tonya was a little smoother than planed. Tonya couldnt say much, considering she really didnt love Dana, but was just looking forward to her celebrity wedding. And Dana didnt have much to say to Tonya other than, I dont really love you, so why are we getting married? After the door slamming and the few tears that were shed, Dana sat alone in her apartment and realized what a day this had turned out to be! She was so inexperienced at love that to have both started and ended two relationships in one day was unthinkable! She couldnt stop thinking about Alice. How she tasted. How she moved her head as they kissed, tilting from right to left, taking her upper lip, then her lower lip and kissing them in a somewhat freer and looser way than Tonya had. Alices kisses were bigger than Laras, they were a little sloppier, with more personality and possibility. Its funny how everyone kisses so differently, but they did, and so far she was really liking Alices style. Wow, this had better work out. Dana realized that there was no going back to how things used to be. It was around dinner time now and Dana didnt know what to do with herself. Tonya was gone and she didnt really know what to do with Alice yet, so she decided to put on her sweats and try to just relax a little bit and let the day settle in. As she sat in her living room, recalling the events of the day the magnitude of what had happened finally hit her. Oh *****. This is either going to go really well, or really badly, Dana thought. After an hour or so, and small cocktail, her doubts slowly subsided, and she decided to call Alice. Dana felt lonely, without Mr. P around, and now with Tonya gone, the house seemed empty at night. Alice? Hi Alice kind of squeaked her response as the excitement of hearing Danas voice temporarily took her vocal chords hostage Al, I was wondering if you wanted to come over for dinner. I I broke it off with Tonya, and well I guess I could just use some company. Hey Kiddo, of course Ill be there. Just sit tight, Ill pick up something for dinner and be over in about 45 minutes. Is that okay? Al Yeah, Dane? I cant wait to see you. Dana uttered the words somewhat hesitantly, wondering if it was too soon to say such things, and feeling a little silly, but Alice smiled and her excitement once again grasped at her vocal chords Yeah, me too Ill see you soon Alice was so excited. She thought that it would take a while for them to be comfortable together, but it seemed like this was something they were both confident in, and the awkwardness was, thus far, minimal. So, Alice thought about what to take for dinner, Chinese food was not conducive to kissing, nasty after taste… Dana was training now, so nothing too heavy would do either, KFC was out Ah HA! Alice put on a little perfume, nothing too strong, just a dab of Coriander and a touch of lavender lotion. Then she grabbed her bag and headed for the Mini. As she drove down Chestnut St. she passed by a little flower stand that was just closing. She immediately pulled a highly illegal U-turn at a red light, flipping the bird to those uptight motorists brazen enough to honk their horns at her. After selecting the perfect mix of sunflowers and daisies (they werent ready for roses, and there was just something about sunflowers that always made her smile), she hopped back in the mini and slammed on the gas, cutting off several large SUVs whos owners she heard shouting something out the windows but she couldnt make it out and just gave them the old Opps, didnt really see you there wave. After picking up the food she pulled into Danas driveway and spotted her in an upstairs window. Dana was silhouetted, only her outline visible to the world. Alice watched her move, she was clearly looking in the mirror and deciding if her current outfit was appropriate. Alice laughed to herself, and watched as Dana swayed her hips from side to side and tilted her head from left to right, examining her reflection and not being able to see herself as Alice did; perfect. When Dana answered the door neither of them really knew what to do. Do we kiss? Do we hug the same thoughts were running through both of their minds. Finally after an awkward moment or two Dana took the bag of food from Alice and Alice pulled the flowers out from behind her back. Dana certainly looked surprised. Alice, sunflowers are my favorite. Just look at them, who couldnt smile at a sunflower? Thank you so much. You didnt have to. I know I didnt have to, but like you said, who doesnt love a sunflower, they are so damn cheery. Sometimes I wonder if they have ulterior motives and are just lulling us into a state of comfort before they. Before they what? I dont knowdo something sinister and mean. I mean, come on, nothing is that wholesome and good. Just then Alices eyes met Danas and she realized what was right there in front of her, and she smiled. Dane? Yeah Al? Um so, can I just like kiss you now? Like whenever I want? Well I guess so. I mean, its okay with me. Okay. Then, I guess Ill just do it. Okay. As Alices lips met Danas they were both instantly reassured. Everything was falling into place. They laughed together and now they would love together, what could be more perfect. Wow Dane. This is a little out of control. I keep waiting for the ***** to hit the fan. Alice, the ***** isnt going to hit the fan. Besides, thats gross dont say that. Its just an expression Dane. Whatever. So, what did you bring? Ooo Its a special treat. I swung by the fish market Did you know that they had a take out menu? Well, its the freshest and best grilled tuna youll ever have. I got you one in a wrap and I got mine on a bun with Mayo I didnt know if youd want mayo, so yours is just dry. Oh, and theres lobster bisque, yeah its amazing. Wow, Well that certainly sounds good. I must admit, I was afraid you were going to bring me KFC or something like that. Well, not for a first date, thats more like a fourth or fifth date meal. Wow, youre right this is kind of our first date isnt it? Um I guess it is. Wow, that s weird. By this time the two had ventured up into the kitchen and had pulled out all the food. Everything was going so well. It was as if the troubles of the world had melted away instantly. They were both so focused on one another. Each one paying attention to the slightest vocal inflection or facial gesture of the other, every now and then brushing past one another, sending a spark into the air. As they cleaned up from dinner, after discussing the future of Bette and Tina and the downfall of what had been Dana and Tonya, they began to timidly flirt with one another. At first it was just looks, then hands brushing over thighs and biceps in passing or in conversation. After the dishes were put away and the table wiped down Dana proposed that they settle in and watch a movie. I mean, you dont have to if you have plans Al, but if you wanted to stay Well, I was going to meet up with this hot young thing I know from my aerobics class, but I guess I could call her and cancel. Al, theres no way in ***** youre in a aerobics class! Okay, Okay, you caught me, no hot plans tonight, well I mean, before you know before you asked me to stay here with you. Well, I mean, its nothing too glamorous, I dont even have popcorn. I suppose we could make do.
