Love me Tender – Ch49
..the next weekend
Tina smiled as she put her arms around her mother Hey Mom..How was your flight?
Bette came up behind Tina, squeezed her shoulder Hello Annie, nice to see you again she moved to embrace her ..come on in.
Rosies asleep preparing for her big day Tina said when she saw her Mom looking around the house Would you like a cup of coffee or tea? Bette and I were just having one..
Annie nodded Herbal tea if you have one..I made the mistake of trying the coffee on the flight over.. and she visibly shuddered.
She stocked up specially said Bette Here let me take your bag. I hope you dont mind sleeping in Rosies new room. Weve just finished decorating it.
Ill be fine said Annie Ill follow you in.. put this other bag in there as well.
Annie looked around the room as Bette put her bag down, she laughed I love the bunnies..but I must say Im glad you put this sofa-bed in here – I would have struggled in the cot.
She placed her bag on the bed, followed Bette back out to the kitchen and stood near the table looking at her daughter Tina, are you sure I shouldnt just stay in the hotel..I have to check in tomorrow afternoon anyway.
Tina put the mug of tea in front of her mother Itll be a good chance for you to spend some time with your granddaughter.. and speaking of Rosie..I think thats her now..Ill go and see if shes awake..
Annie turned to Bette as Tina left the room She looks happyare you two OK? Everything resolved?
Bette laughed You always get to the heart of the matter dont you Annie. Yes.. everythings great..were very much in love with each other and our beautiful daughter.. she gave Annie one of her dazzling smiles I know youre going to adore Rosie…
Annie smiled I feel I know her already, I have so many photos. I wish I could have made it over here sooner.. but it just wasnt possible and I know how it is with a new baby..you need time alone to adjust before people start visiting and offering unsolicited advice
Bette opened her mouth to tell Annie that she would have been welcome anyway but at that moment Tina walked back into the room holding Rosie up in her arms Here she is..
Annie covered her mouth with her hands, it was obvious how thrilled she was to be seeing her granddaughter for the first time Oh shes so beautifulcome to Grandma little one…
Tina placed Rosie into her Grandmothers arms Shes hungry, so Im not sure how long it will be before I need to feed her.. but it was clear Annie was no longer listening, all her attention was taken by Rosie.
Tina smiled at Bette and Bette mouthed back She does care about Rosie… Tina shrugged and continued to smile. Tears sprang into her eyes as she realized her mother had just been – well- just being her mother; trying to be considerate of them as a couple and giving them time to adjust and that it was only her imagination that had lead her to believe she didnt care about her granddaughter.
Annie continued to rock Rose and sing quietly to her until Rosies fascination with this new person was finally pushed aside by her urgent need to be fed. Tina lifted Rosie from her mothers arms and settled herself on the sofa.
Bette and Annie picked up their drinks and joined her. They talked quietly as Rosies little fist batted Tinas breast as she impatiently waited on her food.
Annie listened as Tina or Bette told her their Rosie stories, stories that clearly showed how much they loved her. Bette moved closer to Tina as they talked and finally she turned her head to look at Rosie as she heard the soft baby-sighs which meant Rosie was drifting off to sleep. Tina lightly flicked Rosies cheek with her finger Dont you dare go to sleep now Rosie.. she chastised her softly you need to keep drinking otherwise youll be hungry right in the middle of the ceremony..
They struggled on a little longer until it was clear that Tina was losing the battle and Rosie could no longer stay awake. Bette looked at Tina concerned Do you think shes had enough?
Tina shrugged knowing there was nothing more she could do about it I hope so.. she said and lifted Rosie and placed her in Bettes arms. Here you take herIm going to express some milk just in case… Tina got up, collected everything she needed and walked into the bathroom. This was a procedure she was still uncomfortable with and needed some privacy for.
When she was finished she returned to the kitchen via the bedroom and picked up the sheets of paper that theyd left beside the bed.
She walked down the hallway and halted as she came through the door. Bette was still nursing Rosie in her arms. Her big, strong, beautiful wife was cradling their tiny daughter so tenderly. Tears welled up in Tinas eyes. She never got over seeing how protective Bette was of Rosie, how strong a bond Bette had already formed with their daughter; the daughter who was as much hers as she was Tinas, regardless of the limitations of biology.
Tina placed the milk in the fridge and walked over to the sofa. I thought we could show Mom the readings weve chosen for the ceremony she said as she placed the pages one-by-one in front of her mother. This is a poem we both really like, it celebrates the joy of bringing a child into the worldand this one is a bit more serious..it talks of the responsibility placed into the parents and guardians hands as a new life takes shape.
Annie looked at her radiant daughter and smiled at Bette, acknowledging silently how they both felt about Tina. Annie commented on the beauty and appropriateness of the readings theyd chosen and they went on to discuss the rest of the ceremony and the party afterwards.
After half-an-hour Annie looked up at Bette When are your parents arriving?
They couldnt make it Bette said and didnt elaborate further, didnt tell Annie that she hadnt invited them.
