    After Tonya Chapter 4: Club

Alice smiled to herself as she watched Dana on the tennis court over her computer screen. She was happy Dana was not looking so stressed out anymore, she was throwing herself into the workout. Alice looked back at her black screen. They had been at the club for nearly an hour and she had not been able to get any work done, Dana was just too distracting. She turned the laptop off and stood up as Dana walked over toward the bleachers to get some water. “Hey there” Dana said with a kiss and a smile as she grabbed her water bottle. “Hey” Alice said with a smile. “I’m not getting any work done out here, the hotness of you is much too distracting. I’m going to go work on this inside. Come get me when you are finished.” “What a cheesy line, but I guess it will be okay.” Dana said putting her water bottle back down on the bench. “First of all, it may be cheesy, but it’s true, and second, I know you like the cheesy *****.” Alice said with a playful grin. “Whatever, just go inside and get some work done, I don’t want you to get fired.” Dana said before giving Alice a kiss. “Okay, I’ll see you in a little bit then.” Alice said with one last kiss goodbye. Dana walked back onto the court twirling her tennis racket in her right hand, ready to practice her serve, the blinking phone on the bench going unnoticed. Alice sat down at a table in the country club’s restaurant and pulled her computer, a notebook, and pen out of her bag. She sat the notebook on the table as a waitress came up to her table offering water. “Thank you, um, do you think I could get some cran-apple juice too?” she asked looking up at the waitress. “Of course” the waitress replied as Alice opened her menu and the waitress left. Alice looked as though she was looking the menu over, but she already knew what she was getting, the tomato soup, the cheapest thing on the menu and pretty much the only thing she ate at the over-priced country club restaurant. “Here is you juice” the waitress said placing the glass on the table. “Would like a few more minutes?” she said looking at the menu in Alice’s hands. “No, I think I’m ready.” Alice said looking up at the waitress to see if she was ready to take the order. “I’ll have the tomato soup please.” Alice said handing the menu to the waitress. “That will be right out.” The waitress replied. “Thank you” Alice said with a smile as the waitress turned to walk away. She then turned her attention over to her work once more, pulling her laptop in front of her and turning it on. She opened the blank document she had been ‘working’ on outside. She sat staring at the screen for a few seconds before knitting her brow and staring the computer down. “You are going to get this going.” Alice whispered at the computer. “You know, I hear these things don’t work like that.” A voice said as Alice looked up from her computer a little embarrassed. “Lara, hey” Alice said happy it was someone she knew and not some complete stranger who was thinking she was crazy. Lara put down a tray with a bowl of soup and a side of French fries before pulling a chair out and sitting down herself. “I didn’t order those.” Alice said pointing to the fries. “Well, when the order came back I knew it was you, did you know you are the only one here who ever orders only tomato soup? Anyway, I’m due for a break and I thought you needed more food, so here you are.” Lara said with her trademark smile as she took the food off the plate and put it down in front of Alice. “Wow, aren’t I just the luckiest, free food and a hot chef to bring it to me.” Alice said moving her computer back out of the way. “Yeah, lucky I’m not someone else, you know you should really stop talking to machinery in public, people might think you are crazy. Lucky for you, I already know you are a bit off and I’m used to it.” Lara said with another smile. “Well, I’m supposed to be writing a story that’s due to the editor in a couple days, but I just can’t concentrate.” Alice said taking a bite of her soup. “It’s getting frustrating.” “Al, you can never concentrate, maybe you’ve never noticed that?” Lara said. “I can usually at least get a bullshit story out. I guess I just have other things on my mind.” She said as she continued to eat her soup. “So how is she?” Lara asked. Dana and Lara had been over for a long time, but Alice could tell the women still cared for each other, though they both hid it very well; especially when they were together. “She is doing all right she’s a little shaken right now, but throwing herself into her workout.” Alice explained without giving away any details. “So how is Amy?” Alice asked. Lara got Alice’s subtle hint and didn’t question about Dana being shaken. “Amy’s doing great, she has been out of town for a tournament, but she is coming back this evening.” Lara said picking up a fry. “She has been starting every game.” Lara added, Amy was a semi-professional soccer player. “That’s great” Alice said with a smile, “how has the team been doing?” “They’ve been doing well, they are playing in the final of the tournament right now.” Lara said finishing a fry. “Well, I guess I better let you get some work done, I’m going to go change my shirt and get back to work.” She said as she got up and headed toward the locker rooms. Dana finished practice earlier than she expected and headed over to the bench to get her things. She picked up her water bottle, towel, and cell phone then turned toward the locker room to get the rest of her things and shower before getting Alice. As she walked toward the locker room she saw that she had a new voicemail on her phone. She dialed her number and listened to the message. A chill ran up her spine and fear hit her immediately when she heard the voice. “I guess you don’t talk on the phone while you are practicing, good idea. Who is the blond ***** you came with?” The voice came and Dana froze. “I just thought you should know that your ‘girl’ is inside getting close with a hot red head. You should watch her I don’t think you can trust her. You should be with ME; I would never do something like that to you. Get rid of the blond ***** or I will!” The message ended, Dana stood frozen in fear and looking around paranoid. Just as Dana hung up her phone Lara came out of the locker room and almost plowed into her as she was standing just in front of the locker room door. “Sorry” Lara said before looking up at the girl who had nearly jumped out of her skin. “Hey Dane” she said as she saw it was Dana she had nearly flattened. Lara saw the fear and worry in Dana’s face “What’s wrong Dana? Are you okay?” Lara asked concerned as she put her arm around Dana. “Where’s Alice?” Dana asked in a shaky voice as she tried to hold back her tears. “She’sshe’s in the restaurant. Here” Lara said as she began to lead Dana toward Alice’s table in the restaurant. Alice saw Lara coming to the table with Dana. The look on Dana’s face worried Alice immediately as she jumped up and moved toward them. Dana let go of Lara and wrapped her arms around Alice as Alice did the same. “Honey, what’s wrong? What happened?” Alice asked as Dana began to cry on her shoulder. “Weweneedtogo” Dana said between sobs. “She’s” Dana said looking around “herewatching you.” Dana finished gaining a small amount of composure. “Dana what makes you think that? Why would she be watching me?” Alice asked and Lara looked confused, not knowing what was going on. “She called” Dana said shakily handing her cell phone over to Alice. Alice looked at the phone and noticed the last number dialed was the voicemail for the cell phone. She hit re-dial and handed the phone back over to Dana. “You need to put in the password.” Alice said as Dana grabbed the phone. Dana typed in some numbers and handed the phone back to Alice. Alice listened to the message and Lara could see the fear pass over her eyes, she looked strikingly similar to how she had found Dana. She was getting worried and wondering what was in the message. Alice got some composure back when she hung up the phone and looked commandingly toward Dana and Lara. She closed Dana’s phone and took a deep breath before beginning authoritatively “Okay I don’t know who, where, or what this crazy ***** is capable of. I don’t know where she came from, but she obviously feels that she has some connection to you Dana that gives her the ***** right to have your numbers and say this ***** ***** to you. Do you have any clue who she is Dana, have you ever met her maybe?” “I meet a lot of people at press functions, but I don’t recall ever meeting someone named Caitlin, EVER.” Dana answered, trying to think hard, she usually remembered people when she met them which is not necessarily a good thing when you deal with so many fans. “Okay, so no clue what the woman looks like or how she is getting your numbers. Have you given you number to anyone new for any reason?” Alice asked. “Nope, after I took my number out of the book I changed it and only you guys know it, Bette and Tina, Marina, Shane, and of course Tonya.” Dana said as she looked over to Alice and she could tell Alice was thinking the same thing. Could Tonya be behind this somehow? Alice already thought she was a crazy *****, but never thought it would go this far. “Could she?” asked Dana. Alice looked at her and furrowed her brow, “I think she might.”
