Betrayal in the First Degree – Chapter 12
Summary of previous chapter: While her friends search for Bette, Tinas inner voices debate her behavior. The Saab is finally found without Bette.
Alice hangs up from her call to Tina and immediately calls Shane. She tells Shane what she did not tell Tina which is that Bettes car is only two blocks from her house.
Shane yet again turns around the truck and heads back toward the Kennard-Porter domicile. She couldnt believe what Tina had done. Tina who had for seven years, and virtually without complaint, borne the brunt of Bettes hostility at the world. Tina who was always there to soothe her friends in time of crisis. Tina who tried so hard to mediate between Bette and Kit. Tina, the sweet Carolina girl who somehow managed to make it to the big mean city without being swallowed up by it. Tina who worked around all of the over sized and overpaid egos in the entertainment industry without losing sight of who she was. Tina who had committed to Bette Porter.
And what about Bette? Shane knows that underneath Bettes image lies a heart of gold. She knows that underneath Bettes continual taking for granted of Tinas feelings lies a love so deep it cannot be expressed by words. Bette may be a horses *****, but her love for Tina has more horse power than any engine ever built.
As Cherie taught Shane deeply and bitterly, sometimes love just isnt enough.
Meanwhile, Alice and Dana are debating what to do. Should they drive around, search for Bette on foot, go back to the house to be with Tina?
Gosh, Al. I cant believe this is happening.
I know, Dane. Alice takes Danas hand in hers. Theyll work out, you know?
What if they dont, Alice?
Then they fight over who gets custody of us for holidays.
Im serious, Al.
Im serious too, Dane, in a non serious sort of way. Life will go on for all of us no matter what happens to Bette and Tinas relationship.
I never would have imagined Tina would cheat like that.
I saw her with Helena, Dane, and Im still having a hard time imagining it. I guess that putting up with Porter for all those years finally took its toll.
Is that what happens to relationships, Al. Do they always fall apart?
Not all relationships. Some last.
Do you think we would last?
Alice doesnt quite know how to respond to this question.
She is saved from answering by the sound of her cell phone.
Bette?
Oh, Hi Tina. No, no sign of her. Shanes on her way to help look. You just hang tight, okay?
I feel so bad for Tina even though I know that she is the one at fault. Dana says not returning to the topic of conversation prior to Tinas call.
I do too. She is hurting really bad right now.
Their conversation is interrupted by the sight of Bette walked toward the Saab. Alice lights out of the car like a bolt lightning.
Porter, what the ***** do you think youre doing?
Walking to my car, my little drama queen.
Where have you been?
I went out. The freak of nature and her imaginary bird were just too much. I told Tonya that I was going. Didnt she give anyone the message?
No.
Well, then I am sorry that you got all worked up because Danas fianc doesnt know how to communicate basic English.
Hey Dana interrupts feeling that she is supposed to be defending Tonya.
Alice doesnt give her the opportunity. Why are you out walking? Why is your car here?
Well, I am sorry to deny Woodward and Bernstein a scoop. However, I realized after a couple of blocks that I really shouldnt be driving so, I decided to take a short walk. I can see the headline now. Museum Director Takes Walk. Maybe it will get picked up by UPI.
Damn it, Porter. Thats not what Im talking about and you know it.
No, I dont Al. I left a message with Tonya and am trying to take a peaceful walk when I get assaulted by WeHos Barbara Walters.
Dana intervenes. We were just worried about you, Bette.
Thank you, Dana. I appreciate your concern. I am fine, really. I promise.
Bette looks up and sees the Audi. Why are you driving Tinas car?
Because, we sent Tonya home in the Subaru.
Maybe that is why you didnt get my message. Can I go home now or am I still under interrogation?
Are you okay to drive? Dana asks.
Yes, I am. Bette replies.
Bette gets in the Saab and heads for home followed by Alice and Dana who calls Shane while Al drives.
They all meet up at the Kennard-Porters.
Thank God. Tina says as they enter the house.
Bette says nothing, heading toward the bedroom. Alice and Dana fill in Tina on the details of their encounter with Bette.
They hear flushing followed shortly by the reappearance of Bette in the room. Sorry. I had to go.
Awkward silence fills the room. Shane enters the house and sees the tension. She suggests that perhaps the guests should leave for the night. This time, Bette does not insist that they Par-Tay further.
Alice, Dana, and Shane leave Bette and Tina alone.
