Betrayal in the First Degree – Chapter 16

Summary of the previous chapter: Bette and Tina go to the planet. Tina starts putting together the pieces and realized that she had been used. Shane tries to get Bette to realize she should talk to Tina instead of making assumptions.

We could start by killing Helena. Alice suggests.
Thats good, Al. Bette can come visit us in jail. Shane responds.
How did I ***** up so badly? Tina asks.
I dont know. Why dont you tell us why you decided to go home with Helena? Dana asks, actually on top of the conversation.
I dont want to answer that right now. Ive still got a few more things nagging in the back of my mind. Let me think through them first. Tina vaguely responds.
Whose idea was it to use your house? Alice asks, not planning to give Tina time to think it through.
    Hers?
When did you two decide this?
It started a little over a week ago. Every morning Bette would run out of here and then you guys would go. Helena always seemed to come in after everyone left and I was just sitting here. We started talking.
Let me get this straight, the ***** was stalking you and when she saw you alone she went in for the kill. Leave it to Alice to put things in such a great summation.
It didnt seem like that. It just seemed that everyone had to run off to their lives. Pathetic Tina had nothing to run off to except for weeding her garden or making some dessert for a dinner Bette would come home too late to eat. I started looking forward to talking to Helena. It felt like Tina had something in her life.
Why didnt you say anything to us? Dana asks.
Like what? Can you guys include me in your life because Im a pathetic, bored, stay at home mom who cant even manage to carry a baby long enough to be a mom?
Whoa, Tina. Shane says. Man, were you really that low?
    Thats how I felt.
So, basically, dude, you were wallowing in self pity and Helena came along and made you feel better. Rather than telling your friends, or better yet your wife, that you were feeling low, you let Helena give you a lift. Shane spoke in a Yoda moment.
Sort of Tina responded as she put her head down and spoke softly.
Its our fault, Tina. Were your friends. We should have realized that you were still hurting deep over the miscarriage. We let you down. Dana said.
I let myself down and Ive taken Bette with me. Tina responded as she squeezed Danas hand to show appreciation for the statement of support.
The gang continue to sit and talk as they wait for Bette to return. Tonya, obviously bored by the idea of listening to Bette and Tinas problems, sits on the other side of the room chatting away on her cell phone to a friend.
So, Al what was it that you wanted to talk to Bette about when you were going shopping? Tina asks Alice.
Alice looks over at Dana. I sort of wanted advice about a matter that happened.
You mean kissing Dana? Shane asks.
Well, I hadnt planned on it becoming public knowledge. Alice responds.
It was at that time they heard loud cackle and turned to see Tonya laughing over something said by the person to whom she was talking.
Bury the ***** in the same grave as Helena and run like *****. Shane suggests.
I dont think its gonna be that easy. Dana responds.
I know it wont. Well have to dig a deeper hole.
What happened to not wanting to go to jail? Dana asks her in return.
They sit and ponder the mess which their lives have become. Bette returns from her broker with some papers to examine as she tries to decide how to rollover her 401K from the CAC.
    You guys are still here?
Yeah, it was too much fun listening to Tonya cackle on her cell phone. Shane responds.
Bette looks over at Tonya and shudders. She orders a vanilla latte to sip as she takes out a notepad and pen from her purse.
    Whatcha plannin? Alice asks.
Just some notes for my meeting with our attorney this afternoon.
From her body language, Bette makes it clear that she does not wish to elaborate on the subject further. Shane drags Alice and Dana out of the Planet. They are almost to the Mini before they realize theyve forgotten Tonya.
Oh well. Shell find her way home, they decide as they go to Alices to plot what they are going to do to help Bette and Tina.
Shall we go home for some lunch before my appointment? Bette asks Tina.
    If you want.
    What do you want?
I want to make yesterday have never happened.
Nothing is that simple, T. Things like that dont usually happen spontaneously. They are usually the result of a gradual process.
Before Tina can respond, Bette stands to indicate that she is ready to leave.
They once again say little as they ride in the Saab. Tina is still pondering the things that she has figured out and Bette is pondering her meeting with her attorney. Her primary objective is to arrange for the negotiations to take place without the presence of Helena Peabody.
After a quick lunch, Bette leaves for her appointment with the attorney. It goes well. Bette makes a list of what she wants: six months salary, payment of her COBRA health insurance premiums for that amount of time, a nice bonus for James, and immediate termination of her name in association with any business activities of the CAC. Lastly, all negotiations are to be handled through her attorney. No one from the CAC is to attempt to contact her directly. She leaves her keys, security badge, and business credit cards with her attorney. Bette tells her attorney to make it clear that over the years, Bette has gathered enough information about various activities committed by members of the board that she could make her departure a very messy one. If they know what is good for them, the attorney for the CAC will quickly respond to Bettes attorney that her contract is terminated according to Bettes terms.
Driving home, Bette allows herself to feel good about her meeting with the attorney. Not only is she planning to get her fair share from the ***** who have made her live so difficult for the past couple of years, she is finally free. For the first time in her life, Bette can let her wings soar. She will be receiving a nice sum of money from the CAC, enough to live on for a while. There were plenty of job offers after the success of Provocations. Bette Porter is in total control of her own destiny. Unfortunately, she is not in control of what matters most: her life with Tina.
When she arrives at home, Bette goes into her office to sit an think. Aimlessly, she starts typing some ideas into her laptop.
