Betrayal in the First Degree – Chapter 20

Summary of the previous chapter: Tina does her own intervention with Bette who reveals some insecurities.

After their talk, Bette returns to her office, but leaves Mona with Tina who takes Mona into her lap. Mona contentedly sits as Tina scratches her behind the ears while contemplating her conversation with Bette.

Tina thinks about what Bette had said in regards to changing herself to be what Tina wanted. Tina tries to decide how she feels about having Bette around all of the time, having Bette be gentle and not argumentative, having calm good natured Bette who was so cute when teaching Mona to sit. Tina thinks about the Bette who was late for their doctors appointment when Tina lost the baby, Bette who entered their therapy appointment talking on her cell phone, Bette who triumphed and wowed the art world over Provocations.

Admittedly, it has become a quieter, calmer household. It has been rather boring, though, even when taking into account that Bette had spent all of her time in the office. There has not been much excitement in the household lately, and Tina misses it.

Maybe Bette was right, maybe Tina doesnt know exactly what she wants.

For her part, Bette finds that she does not miss her job as much as she thought she would. There is a line from a Bon Jovi song, You live for the fight when thats all that youve got. Bette had so much more in her life so, why did she always have to live for the fight? Could she be happy without it or was it in her blood? Was there a compromise? Could Bette find a way to maintain the standard of living to which she and Tina were accustomed without having to fight so hard?

The reality of the art world whether from the perspective of the institution, the gallery, or the individual artist is that it is dog eat dog. Survival is a constant fight. There is far more desire for resources than there are resources available.

For Bette Porter, the reality is that if she wishes to stay in the art world she must always fight to survive. If she stops fighting, she will lose the ability to give Tina, or even herself, anything.

Fighting means returning to the old Bette. This means returning to the Bette who made Tina so unhappy that Tina felt the need to run into Helenas arms.

    1. Okay, totally understandable why Bette feels insecure, but isn’t she just the tiniest bit angry? And Tina? She should be thinking long and hard on how she needs to compromise as well. Great chapter, your writing always leaves me guessing.

    2. Well, I guess this time is the time that Bette have to go back to be the old Bette and stand up to fight back for everything and get anythings of her back! And about Tina, she need to thinking clearly that what it is she really wanted and what about her and Bette’s relationship and what are she wanted from Bette. She need to tell Bette how’s she feel and what are she need. I guess that it’s the best thing she need to do it right now! Please keep continue the story! Thank you so much!

    3. Let Tina tell Bette how she feels. That she would go back to work,so that Bette wouldn’t have to work so much. Go back to the beginning Live ,love and the other could wait.
