The Story of Shane: The Beginning 11
Ron dialed the number on the business card, waiting for the phone to be picked up.
This is Andrea Watson speaking. How may I help you? the voice over the phone asked.
Ron stammered out a response, Mrs. Watson, hi, uh, this is Veronica Stevens from the foster home. Im sorry if Im calling you at an inconvenient time.
Veronica, of course not. Its good to hear from you. So what do you have on your mind?
The kindness in Andreas voice helped Ron to get over her nervousness. I know that you said you will come back here two day from now to talk more about the adoption. I have changed my mind. I would love if the Petersons agree to adopt me.
Thats great. I will call and tell them right away. Everything will be taken care of by the time that I come to see you.
Uh, is it possible if you can come tomorrow instead? Im just very anxious to see this through.
Alright, I will make it happen. Dont worry. I will bring the Petersons with me tomorrow. I guess we will see you after school then. You will not regret this. Good night Veronica.
Good night and thank you. Ron slowly hung up the phone. Thats that, she thought. No turning back now.
Ron went back to her room and packed up whatever possessions that she had. She did not want to linger here a second more than necessary once Andrea and the Petersons get here tomorrow. It did not take long for Ron to accomplish her task. Funny how much stuff she has lost since coming here three months ago including her heart. Thats life I guess.
For the firs time that week, Ron fell asleep early, no longer caring if Shane was there or that she was okay wherever she was.
The morning sun woke Ron up. The promise of a beautiful day outside did not fit her mood. Ron was just a shell of herself, empty. The seething anger was no longer there to help carry her, and the pain was just too much to handle. The only way that she could cope was to block everything out. The fact that Shanes bed was empty did not even register.
Classes, classmates, teachers, the day were all just a blur as the earth spins on itself leaving Ron behind with her broken heart.
Ron got back to the house just as Andrea Watson stepped out of her car.
Andrea waved at Ron who slowly walked toward her. They shook hand. Andrea could see that Ron was not herself, more withdrawn and her eyes seemed so empty. She however just put it off as the fact that Ron was leaving her friend behind.
Ron turned around as another car pulled up to the house. A couple stepped out of the car. Ron could see that the man was in his mid-fifties with white streaked hair. His laughing blue eyes reveal his jovial manner, but Ron could see a slight nervousness there also.
When he saw Ron, he turned to his wife as if looking for support. His wife was slightly on the chubby side. Ron would estimate that she was in her late forties. Her eyes too bestowed a feeling of warmth.
The woman clasped her husbands hand and patted it reassuringly as they made their way toward Ron. They stood in front of each other for what seemed like forever soaking in the site of the other before both parties realized that they have been staring and smiled sheepishly.
The man introduced himself as Maximilian Davis but to call him Max. His wife introduced herself as Emily and out of nowhere she stepped forward and gave Ron a hug.
When Ron felt those arms enveloped around her, pulling her against Emilys comforting body. At that contact, she almost broke down and cried. God, it felt like a lifetime since I felt any physical contact with anybody, Ron thought.
Emily patted Ron on the back reassuringly. She pulled back reluctantly and brushed Rons long brown hair back. Somehow I felt you needed that honey. She smiled and Ron couldnt help but smiled in return.
Up in her room, Shane watched the interactions between Ron and her soon to be adoptive parents. They seemed nice, she thought. This is for the best after all.
Shane continued on watching as the group outside made their way into the house. Shane could not muster up the energy get away from the window and so she just stood there lost in thoughts.
So now what Shane. You have successfully driven away the one person that loves you. Now what?
What seemed like hours or maybe it was just minutes but Shane still has no answers to the question in her head.
The door to the room opened and quietly shut again. Shane could feel Rons presence but she has yet to show it.
Ron too did not acknowledge Shane. She made her way to her bed where a small suitcase was laid. With that in hand, she made her way back to where she came.
With one hand on the door while the other clutching at her suitcase, Ron turned back toward the lonesome figure that she once loved and a part of her would always love.
Shane heard the door open again and knew that this was her last chance of seeing Ron. Shane turned around but before she could say anything
I hate you Shane. I hate you for making me fall in love with you. I hate you for the way you discarded my feelings. I hate you for breaking my heart. I hate you Shane because I still love you even now, and Im afraid that I would go on loving you. Goodbye Shane. For the second time in the past hour, the pain inside Ron threatened to overwhelm her but again she was able to suppress it.
The door clicked shut for the last time gently, practically making no sound. However to Shane it was loud and deafening, sucking with it all of the oxygen in the room. Shane turned around and saw the Petersons drove away with Ron in the back seat.
You wanted to get Ron out of this life, and you have sucessfully broke her so she would run away from you. Mission accomplished, Shane thought all the while her heart was shattering into pieces. She did not notice that for the first time in years tears were streaming down her cheeks.
