    Breaking silence

Bette was positively ebullient all during dinner. She was nearly giddy with good humor, and Tina knew that it was because of the phone call. In Bette’s mind, everything seemed to be resolved. Family reunited, rift healed, life was once again in order. But it didn’t feel that way to Tina. In fact, her mother’s phone call left Tina feeling almost more unsettled than before.

“More coffee?” Shane asked, touching Tina’s elbow.

Tina jumped, startled out of her thoughts.

“Better make hers decaf,” Alice said. “Or another glass of wine.”

    “Sorry,” Tina smiled apologetically.

“Your mind’s on more important things,” Dana said. “You must be so excited about seeing your family. Introducing Bette and Jordan to your folks.”

“Yeah. It’s very exciting,” Tina nodded.

“Maybe we can have everybody here for Thanksgiving this year,” Bette said, leaning forward. “Your mom and dad, Rick, Kit. All of us. Or we can all get together at Christmas.”

“It’ll be just like the Waltons,” Dana grinned.

“Sure. Urban, *****, bi-racial Waltons,” Alice said.

“I think I’m going to get some water. Does anyone else want anything?” Tina asked, glancing around the table at the shaking heads in front of her before going to the kitchen.

Tina got a bottle of water from the fridge, opened it and took a long, deep swallow. She knew she should be thrilled and ecstatic, just like Bette. This is what she had wanted, right? To have her parents back? To have a life and a family that was whole and not fragmented? And now it was happening. Her mother said that they were ready to fly down as soon as Tina and Bette would see them. So why did she feel such an incredible sense of dread? Tina took another drink of water, trying to force the anxiety back down below the surface. She was surprised, that’s all. Nothing more than that.

“Hey,” Shane said quietly, setting down a stack of cleared plates from the table.

“Hey,” Tina replied. “You didn’t have to do that.”

“They’ve moved on from the Waltons to Little House on the Prairie and I never got over my whole Melissa Sue Anderson thing,” Shane shrugged.

    1. I loved the tv show Charlie’s Angels-my favorite as a kid. Cam not believe that we lost Farrah. But Shane is right Tina still had a right to yes or no to her parents visit.
