    Breaking silence

Tina Kennard grew up surrounded by family, friends, and plenty of love.  Her parents, Barbara and Mitchell, had doted on both of their children, and Tina and her older brother Rick had benefited from their parents’ attention and genuine interest in their lives.  Mitch’s job as an English professor at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill afforded his family with a very comfortable life, and his son and daughter enjoyed private music lessons, specialized summer camps, and travel abroad.  It was an idyllic, if sheltered, childhood.  And it in no way prepared Tina for the way her parents responded when she told them that she was in love with Bette.

At the tender age of 25, Tina had already experienced a meteoric rise as a development executive for Alphaville.  Her career success, however, was inversely proportionate to her success in romantic relationships.  Her long hours and intensive travel schedule made dating difficult, and when she did find the time and energy to go out, Tina was often disappointed with the superficial priorities and values of the men she met in Los Angeles.  She settled into the acceptance that it just wasn’t her time to try and have a serious relationship, and that her 20s would be all about fun and freedom.

So, when she met Eric during a client meeting, Tina didn’t have any assumptions or illusions that he was going to be the love of her life.  But he was bright, ambitious, and he made her laugh.  They enjoyed similar interests and each other’s company, and for several months, they had a wonderful time together.  It was Eric, a huge art lover, who brought her to the Bette Porter Gallery.  And Eric who introduced her to the stunning, fiercely intelligent, deeply passionate woman who would become her wife.

From the moment she shook Bette’s hand, from the instant their glances met, Tina knew that she felt something soul-deep for this enigmatic woman.  The years of unfulfilling relationships, the endless litany of Mr. Wrongs were forgotten.  And when they kissed for the first time, a single, smoldering, tender kiss, Tina understood that something life-altering was about to happen to her.

Their courtship, which Bette allowed Tina to set the pace for, was heady and romantic and infused with a sense of the profound possibilities that a life together would offer them.  The fact that Bette was a woman seemed nearly incidental to Tina.  After all, Bette’s gender wasn’t nearly as significant as her heart and mind and soul.  Those were the things that Tina fell helplessly in love with.

    1. This chapter is densely packed with detail. Love the varying milieux.

This was not over too soon. Although, I could, of course, read your fic endlessly…

      Thanks!

    2. im feeling the horrid feeling that comes when youve been called into the principles office. always hated that. the dread. beautiful as always. cant wait for the next one.

    3. Nice chapter – you packed lots of background and detail into a small package. I liked the conversation between Bette and Tina in particular because it was so realistic and also, familiar. So happy to have you back on a regular basis.

    4. FFC, may I have your autogragh? I’ve got a feeling in a few years I can sell it on ebay for a mint. Your writing is incredible. Thank you for coming back to us with this splendid tale.

    5. *Happy sigh* Oh how I’ve missed your stories and your style of writing. I’m sooo glad that you’re back to a normal writing schedule, ffc! Thank you!! I look forward to seeing how Tina’s meeting with her parents goes!

    6. “do you think you are the only lioness in the pride” Brilliant. – love this chapter and this theme – went through this with my parents and the reconnecting took time – can’t wait to see how you write it. Thanks for a great story.

    7. I’m with Techgal, I could read you fan fic endlessly….this chapter setup the meeting perfectly for Tina. I’m just wondering what is going through her parents minds?

    8. FFC,
You have done it again; made the simplest of conversations a piece of art.
This chapter is wonderfully realized as Tina, after the security of Bette arms, sorts out her thoughts and emotions then honestly tells Bette her plan of action. I love the way Bette tries to protect Tina by suggesting that she would sit at another table. This had me rolling in the aisles as I really could imagine Bette saying that and then trying to get Tina to agree.
Tina response was perfect. There are times when you need to face the fear and do it anyway. This often means doing it alone. You have captured one of these times flawlessly.
It is down to your talent and flair how easy this story rattles along and gives immense pleasure to its readers.
Thank you for sharing this gift with me.
Please post soon as I want to know what happens next.
Will there be a happy reunion or a final farewell?
      Only you have the solution.
      Your Loyal Fan.

    9. Just love the thought process and Tina’s insistence that she go it alone, to test the tides. She’s one fierce lioness, when it comes to her family. Please post again, soon.

    10. There was a little of everything in this one. A little history, a little Bette & Tina and a little, little bit of Tina’s parents. Looking forward to meeting the parents and full of hope that they can look past that which they could not so many years ago. This was beautiful as always. Thanks for writing.
