    The Roommates – 2nd Dimension: Chapter 48

    Melvin returned his gaze to Damon, his smug smile still in place. “And Mr. Lawrence, Bette tells me you play football for UCLA. It was never my sport, much too brutish for me. I appreciate the more cultured athletic pastimes. I’m an avid golfer.”

    Bette’s eyes opened two millimeters wider and her breath caught in her throat.

    Oh Shit”, she thought, “Here we go”.

    Damon held his own, smiling evenly, despite Melvin’s condescending tone and elitist attitude. Bette had warned him things might get ugly and he was determined to withstand the brunt of any unpleasantness.

    Bette had been right to worry about the voracity of her father’s sharp tongue. However, she had brought along a most experienced soldier to this battle of wills.

    “Interesting sport, Mr. Porter. I played a round with my coach and a few NFL recruiters a few weeks ago. My score was off a little bit.7 over par. I’ve got to work on those chipper shots. They get me every time. Although, I limit my time on the course. I don’t want to get soft. Those in my circle consider golfing to be a cushy sport. Not very manly at all.”, Damon replied.

    Bette chewed the inside of her jaw and felt heat rise up to her neck. This was not going to be pretty.

    And they hadn’t even given their orders yet.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    A blue-eyed waiter appeared like a vision in the desert and gave his name as Jean Pierre. Bette felt the cool tingles of relief wash over her as Jean Pierre saddled up to their table, a professionally crisp smile accompanying his light, manly scent.
    This man represented the first real break in the Porter-Lawrence battle of witty retorts. As he announced the evening’s specials and made his own recommendations, Bette studied her father and her close friend. They had been testing each other from the moment Melvin appeared; trading barbs cloaked in charming words and compound sentences.
    Therefore, it was quite a surprise to her when these dueling warriors shared laughs and smiles with Jean Pierre about the succulent roast duck and the savory foie gras. She thought it was odd that the two could be engaged in such a battle of and suddenly stop to bask in the moment and share appreciation for L’Orangerie’s choice offerings.
    1. That was intense. Melvin is truly a hyprocite. Damon was being a true friend…Bette had to stand up to Melvin. Just hope she would have told Tina. This is a battle she could use support with…and Tina could have provided that for her. Thanks for posting, please post soon.
    2. Damon Rocks! I love him so much and if you decide to spin off another stry it should totally be about him. Could Bette ask for a better friend? I think not! So Melvin is a jerk, what else is new. I think Bette is in for some serious disappointment when she makes it back down to San Diego to confront her dad. Thanks for posting and do it again real soon b/c this story is just grrrrrrreat!
    3. I was happy to see you back and wasn’t expecting such intensely powerful drama. Melvin has never accepted Bette for who she was. Damon is a great friend and protector. This has always been one of my favorite stories.
    4. did you give up on B&T ?I’ve read your story from the beginning and I miss it :-( Hope everything’s ok with you, it would be nice if you decide to post again, everyone over here would thrill, really, please continue your story ;-)
    5. I’ve spent the last week or so reading up on “The Roommates” and the sequel but has hit a pause in this story. Please allow me to say that I love the journey you’re creating for Baby Bette & Tiny Tina. Hope all’s well in your world and it’s only real life getting in the way of this wonderful fanfic. Looking forward to reading how Bette will deal with her recent revelations…and how it’ll affect her relationship with Tina.
    6. First of all, thank you sooo much for posting. I look for your story every day so what a treat to log on and find an update tonight. Secondly, I hate that Bette is running after Melvin! She has absolutely nothing to apologize for. If anyone should be apologizing it should be Melvin. I really think she needs to let Tina in on this. Bette tries to be so strong but deep down she needs support and who better to give her that support than Tina. Please post again soon!
    7. Holy shit. I know this isn’t real, but this conversation has happened and will continue to happen. I think sometimes I get so wrapped up in my “coming out” that I forget how easy I have it compared to this. I wonder if Damon will tell Tina. I know Bette doesn’t want Tina to be exposed, but Tina needs to be prepared in the event Melvin does pull Bette outta school and Bette can’t find a way to pay for it on her own. Now I can see why this chapter was so long. It had to be for all the intensity and realism to be present.
    8. Now that’s what I call coming out with a bang. We all know how important Bette’s father is to her so this is going to only get worse I suspect. But I thrust in you as a writer to take us where ever the road leads you.
    9. That was truly excellent, very intense and so real….one hell of a chapter. You’re one of the best writers on this side and that really says a lot :o)) I can’t help being drawn into the world you’re creating and I’m loving every minute of it……so please post more often. THANK YOU AND HAPPY NEW YEAR….
    10. well melvin again proved that he is a first class ass hole… you have been deeply missed and i am glad you came back… and with a vengence… loved this story from day 1… please continue
    11. Wow, I wasn’t expecting that to come out of the dinner. I hope Bette truely knows what she is doing because it is going to be a very long battle. I hope that Melvin can find it in his stone cold heart to accept his daughter. Post again.
    12. I’ve been an avid reader of this story since I first joined this site….I don’t comment much but your story is truly a wonderful treasure. It captured my attention from the beginning and still does even now. This chapter was a surprise, but was a huge stepping stone in the story…kudos to you for continuing to write such an absorbing story and for keeping it so real.
    13. I’m so happy you’ve posted this wonderful chapter. I LOVE this story, it’s in my top three favorite stories. Can’t wait to find out what will happen next, poor Bette…
    14. MTS,I have just caught up with the last two chapters.And WOW! you have completely blown me away.I am shell-shocked.Given the tenacity and sheer viciousness of Melvin’s assault on Damon, I did have an onminous feeling that Bette was coming out to her father.And these scenes were wonderfully written with crisp and cutting dialogue to capture the true emotions of the moment.Finally Bette has released herself from the shackles of denial and fear however why didn’t she have resolve to tell the whole truth? Using Sidney as a defense was unnecessary and I’m sure will only end in tears.You described the pain and angst that finally pushed Bette into telling all perfectly. This is your talent and makes this story so special.Bette’s determination and stubbornness came through in her single-mindedness to face her father to clear the air and rebuild her shattered relationship.Damon was such a sweetie in trying to defend Bette and encourage her to let sleeping dogs lie and the dust to settle before charging in where angels fear to tread.Now you have to post soon.Please.Your Loyal Fan
