    Daniel’s first day at school

    ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE CHAPTER FIVE

     

    Bette had been up since 5am – it was one of the few times that the house was silent and she wanted to get on with her writing. She had written her first screenplay when she was 18 and still a freshman at Yale. It had been a piece of pulp about a female welder who wanted to be a dancer and on a whim she had sent it to several movie studios and one had picked it up and turned it into a movie. At the time of the movie’s release she had been as young as the female star of the film who had sought fame as little as she had.

     

     

    From them Bette had applied herself to her studies and wrote on the side. She had trained as a journalist and after graduation she had worked for the Boston Globe and the Dallas Sentinel.

     

    Five years of journalism had jaded her and when her father had died and left her a substantial sum of money she had quit full time work to return to academia and she had taken her Masters degree in History. She worked part time teaching Creative Studies at a local college but made most of her income from her writing.

     

     

    But Emily’s death had robbed her of her inspiration and she had stopped writing. Helena – her publisher as well as her best friend had tried to encourage her to write as a form of therapy but Bette had been so submerged in grief that even to write a paragraph was torture.

     

    But in the past few weeks she had begun to write again. She had told Helena that she was working on a new story making it seem like a small project. But Bette was excited by her writing again and part of her felt guilty to be enjoying her talent. She knew if she confided in anyone they would tell her that Emily would have wanted her to keep writing regardless of anything and everything else.

    Sitting in the silent house with only Maggie at her feet for company Bette was slowly beginning to believe that she would sell her work again. She had thought about going full time at college but her love was always with words .

    7. I felt there might be a joke in there somewhere about pussy-cats fighting to be stroked by Shane. That was a particularly resonant chapter, ally. I wonder who else uses their father’s name as their nom de plume? Sorry about the cold. Vitamin C and zinc, preferably with something in the stomach.

    12. Oh and I know that Dana is going to tell Tina about Bette’s late wife, which will answer that question. Try some good old chicken soup and try sipping on some honey& lemon tea for that cold. Way to draw out the little secret funnyone :o).

    26. Ally, Am loving this most recent of your stories. It is pleasing to see Tina and Bette build a friendship after everything they have both been through. Liked the reference to Flashdance and LOL @ Tinas slip about that being a hot movie :o)) B&T are already colleagues and have started being friends….when are the becoming lovers Ally??? Great story

    28. Nice “Flashdance” reference! lol I was reading and thinking, “Oh no Bette’s gonna fall for Dana.” Well a little fun wouldn’t hurt as long as she and Tina end up together. ;)
