Feeling safe and wanted again – Chapter 33
After the small embarrassing performance last Saturday, Tina knew that it would happen when the time was right. She wasn’t going to force it and neither was Bette.
It was Friday, and again it was time for their weekly romantic dinner as Tina would call it. Tina had to work a little overtime today, so she had called Bette earlier and asked if she perhaps could pick up Evan at kindergarten? Bette was finished early today, so that was no problem.
She drove up to the kindergarten, parked the car and stepped out and walked towards the fence. She saw Evan, he was seated on one of the caretakers lap. He saw Bette and started bouncing his arms. Bette smiles at this as she walks up to him..
“Mama.” He says giggling.
“Hi, sweetie, I’ve missed you.” She says as the caretaker lifts Evan up so Bette could take him.
“Hi, Ms. Kennard called and told us you would be here. Let me get his little bag. I’ll be right back.” The young woman says as she runs inside. One of the other caretakers walks up to her.
“Hi, I’m Julia, so you’re Evans other mother?” She asks smiling.
“Well, not officially, but he calls me mama and I’m together with his mother so, I guess so yes.” Bette replies, rambling a bit.
“It’s nice to meet you.” Julia says.
“It’s nice to meet you too. I’m Bette.” Bette replies. Bette lifts Evan up above her head and he starts laughing. That reveals her badge.
“So, you’re a cop?” Julia asks.
“Yes, I am.” Bette says with pride in her voice.
“That’s great. My brother is a cop too. He works as an officer, Peter Salinger. You know him?” Julia asks.
“Peter Salinger…” Bette thinks for a second. “Ah yes, off course, I just had to put the name to face. Of course. He’s a good guy.” Bette replies.
“So what do you do in the force?” Julia asks.
“I’m a detective.” Bette replies as the other caretaker came back with the bag.
“A detective, that’s impressive. Great to see a female detective, not often that happens I guess.” Julia says.
“No, it’s not. I’m the only one here in Nashville. We need more.” Bette says with a smile. The other caretaker hands her the bag. “Thank you. So little man, ready to go home?” Bette asks Evan, who in return just giggles and talks babytalk. “I guess you are.” Bette says and smiles. They say goodbye and leaves for home. On their way, they stop by the local supermarket to buy something they can have for dinner. She had texted Tina, to tell her to just go straight home, that she and Evan would make dinner today. Bette had gotten ‘I love you’ in return.
