    Chapter 67

Cane’s Bar & Grill, Mission Beach, San Diego – Wednesday Night

Bette sat on her stool staring out at the dark waves crashing against the beach. A salty sea breeze whipped through the rooftop restaurant where she had just finished dinner.

A half-eaten plate of tequila lime shrimp and an empty margarita glass occupied the table in front of her. The bustle of the establishment did not seem to faze the ad exec from her own thoughts.

After record-time packing and loading up her CTS-V with her travel gear, she sat in traffic for nearly three hours making her way down to San Diego. The entire drive, her phone received six “I’m sorry” texts and countless missed calls from Tina.

Even though she wanted to talk to her, she needed the time to regroup and get some perspective before jumping into a long conversation with Tina about where they were or where they would end up. It was certainly not a conversation she wanted to have via cell phone anyway. She just hoped Tina would understand.

Having spoken with Kit, she was more than certain that Tina would go to the Planet for karaoke night since she knew all the girls were going. She told Kit that she didn’t mind her telling Tina she had come down early, but to make sure Tina wasn’t too worried.

She absent-mindedly reached for her glass, keeping her eyes glued to the beach. It wasn’t until she brought it to her lips that she realized she had already killed it.

Alright Porter, we’re cuttin’ you off for the evening, she told herself. If you can’t remember that you drank all your alcohol, you certainly don’t need anymore.

“Would you like a box ma’am?” a young waiter with a summer tan and a puka shell necklace interrupted Bette’s self-advisory.

    “What? Oh, no, thank you.”

    “May I take your plate?”

“Yes, of course.” Bette responded, pushing her plate toward the edge of the table. “Where’s the band going to be playing tonight?” She inquired of the waiter.

“Silent Minority? Oh, yeah, they’re playing downstairs.”

“Oh, I didn’t realize there was a downstairs.”

“Right at the foot of the stairs you came up on the outside of the building, there’s an entrance to the concert area. You can get down there from right over there by the bar though.”

    1. It’s my lucky day; 2 chapters of this great story..awesome! I think the perfect song for what Bette & Tina are both going through right now is Sia’s Soon We’ll Be Found. I guess my musical taste is just as varied as yours with a penchant for australian and European singers. So if the meeting with James goes well maybe the good mood will carry over into Bette’s personal life and she’ll have it out with Tina and then they can get to the good part … Making Up! Great post as always, pps!

    2. Gosh, hope Bette will listen to her and they can work it out. A lot of love and a bit of patience is what is needed now and for Bette to climb down off her high horse and understand what she has in Tina. Great chapter. The Collins song is one of my favs as well nd very appropriate for the story and where they are now. Thanks for posting.

    3. I’m laughing at myself… I was so wrapped in your incredible writing that I got to the end of the chapter anticipating a link to Tina’s performance….hahaha… You’ve captivated me and turned me to a moron!!

    4. Well, I guess that I don’t have much of a choice!!!! But getting kinda fed up, cause I’m running tired, very tired, but this is my job. I’ll definitely be on vacation by end of next week, mid time I will have some album arrangements to continue. My man is a great support eventhough some times it can be very difficult and just getting frustated but, so far so good. Love this chapter, but can’t wait to see those people having a serious talk and see where it will go. Thanks for update, and still waiting for your stuff on PM.

    5. MeLL — this story and you continue to ROCK! Just got back from gigging with my band and a family wedding to find your latest installment. Absolutely enjoyable. Post when you can. As always I’m looking forward to MORE ;)

    6. Just back from N.C. and Hurricane Irene-to be met with two new chapters. I loved them, I understand the need for Bette to get away-so we now have our James in the story. I am glad that Kit did not judge Tina and I that the other girls already consider Tina a friend. I hope Bette gets back there before she gets into trouble, and she and Tina talk.

    7. Ooh you wonderful woman! ‘Eternal flame’ one of my most favourite song of all time and so suited to the situation between our favourite women. Your post just cheered me up no end, going back to work for the first time in 3 weeks tomorrow. Am totally depressed! :0( hope you are enjoying your long bank holiday weekend…. Am away now to work on my end of the bargain! Thanks
