Playing By Heart
“Great, thank you.”
“No problem, would you like another margarita?” he asked, picking up her empty glass.
“Umm, I better not.” Bette smiled shyly. The young man was just about to turn away with her plate when Bette stopped him again. “By the way, why are they closing this place? It seems like a really prime location.”
“They’re expanding the Wave House. It’s right down the boardwalk. The owners are renovating the space to make it even better. It’s gonna be poppin’” he answered, his enthusiasm was evident. Bette smiled at him as he walked away.
Once the bill was paid and a hefty tip was left, Bette made her way downstairs to where the band was setting up.
There was already a young crowd gathered at the foot of the stage waiting for the roadies to set up all the equipment. Bette suddenly felt out of her element and over the hill. Nearly every concert-goer was sporting a college sweatshirt of some sort and decked out in flip flops.
She was happy that she abandoned her typical designer threads and opted instead for a vintage Def Leppard t-shirt, a pair of jeans and sneakers. Anyone who didn’t know her would think she was just another young attendee blending in well with her hair swept up in a ponytail and groupie-like wardrobe. In fact, she caught the attention of quite a few other audience members, both male and female.
Her eyes scanned the room, taking in her surroundings before they settled on a young guy near the stage, on his cell phone. He was dressed nice, with a dark blue, collared shirt, grey slacks and shiny black dress shoes. Bette watched as he stepped through the cords and wires from the music equipment making his way toward the back of the club, engrossed in his phone call.
There was a CD of a local band playing through the overhead speakers as the din of the open venue increased in volume and more patrons made their way inside.
Bette was still watching the nicely dressed man who had inched closer to her while giving whoever was on the other line a piece of his mind. She smirked as she was reminded of Luke Perry and Jason Priestley in Beverly Hills, 90210 because of the young man’s nicely trimmed sideburns. When did those come back in style? she asked herself. He had come so close to her now that she couldn’t help but overhear his side of the conversation.

It’s my lucky day; 2 chapters of this great story..awesome! I think the perfect song for what Bette & Tina are both going through right now is Sia’s Soon We’ll Be Found. I guess my musical taste is just as varied as yours with a penchant for australian and European singers. So if the meeting with James goes well maybe the good mood will carry over into Bette’s personal life and she’ll have it out with Tina and then they can get to the good part … Making Up! Great post as always, pps!
yeah no hankies lol. Thanks for post hun get them together. pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. :)
Gosh, hope Bette will listen to her and they can work it out. A lot of love and a bit of patience is what is needed now and for Bette to climb down off her high horse and understand what she has in Tina. Great chapter. The Collins song is one of my favs as well nd very appropriate for the story and where they are now. Thanks for posting.
great story post soon thanks!!!!!
Wonderful.
Excellent, well-constructed chapter . Tina’s just keeping her cool and letting Bette ruminate on her thoughts and work it out in her own crazy head.
I’m laughing at myself… I was so wrapped in your incredible writing that I got to the end of the chapter anticipating a link to Tina’s performance….hahaha… You’ve captivated me and turned me to a moron!!
Well, I guess that I don’t have much of a choice!!!! But getting kinda fed up, cause I’m running tired, very tired, but this is my job. I’ll definitely be on vacation by end of next week, mid time I will have some album arrangements to continue. My man is a great support eventhough some times it can be very difficult and just getting frustated but, so far so good. Love this chapter, but can’t wait to see those people having a serious talk and see where it will go. Thanks for update, and still waiting for your stuff on PM.
MeLL — this story and you continue to ROCK! Just got back from gigging with my band and a family wedding to find your latest installment. Absolutely enjoyable. Post when you can. As always I’m looking forward to MORE ;)
Just back from N.C. and Hurricane Irene-to be met with two new chapters. I loved them, I understand the need for Bette to get away-so we now have our James in the story. I am glad that Kit did not judge Tina and I that the other girls already consider Tina a friend. I hope Bette gets back there before she gets into trouble, and she and Tina talk.
Thanks for this update. I think kins40 is going to update soon :) Love this and so just lovely. Thank you again.
Go home Bette !Great story, thank you for the update.PPS
Feeling like Welcome Back, Kotter, huh! LOL Alright, Bette, go claim your woman!
Ooh you wonderful woman! ‘Eternal flame’ one of my most favourite song of all time and so suited to the situation between our favourite women. Your post just cheered me up no end, going back to work for the first time in 3 weeks tomorrow. Am totally depressed! :0( hope you are enjoying your long bank holiday weekend…. Am away now to work on my end of the bargain! Thanks
