Family Affair (Thanksgiving Fanfic Challenge)
Tina set a cup of coffee down in front of Bette and sat down across from her.
“Thanks,” Bette said absently, engrossed in reading the paper.
“So,” Tina said, waiting for Bette to look up and acknowledge she was speaking. When she didn’t Tina rolled her eyes and continued on. “What do you want to do for Thanksgiving?”
“Hadn’t thought about it,” Bette said mildly, turning a page. She glanced up briefly at Tina with a little smile. “Why? Do you want to make a big dinner or something?”
Tina shook her head and looked down at her teacup. She wanted to tread carefully. “I thought… well, I could meet your family. Or you could meet mine.” She kept her eyes averted and sipped her tea, hoping she hadn’t gone too far.
She and Bette had been dating for the better part of a year now. She had moved into Bette’s snug bungalow not long ago, and they were still adjusting to the changes, although they remained in honeymoon phase of sorts. Spending so much time together, one thing Tina had learned about Bette was how to read Bette’s non-verbal cues. Like the one she was giving Tina now, as she closed her paper with a frown and didn’t say anything. She was thinking of a way to let Tina down gently, no doubt.
“I’ve told you all about my family, T. You’ve told me all about yours. Why would either of us want to meet the other’s family?” Bette asked, with a teasing note to her voice.
“You know how I feel about these things Bette. Family is important to me. I’ve only met your sister -”
“Wasn’t that enough for you?” Bette was smiling.
“You know I like Kit.” It was true; Tina and Bette’s sister got along instantly. Tina liked Kit’s sassy attitude and Kit had confided in her that some of Bette’s sharper edges had softened up considerably since she had been dating Tina.
“And you know I’m glad about that,” Bette countered. “Unfortunately, she’s already got plans for Thanksgiving.”
“Oh. But what about the rest of your family? Don’t you want them to know about me?” The answer was obvious. Tina supposed that it wasn’t a fair question to ask. Why make Bette admit to something so hurtful?

I wonder of all those family members out there who practice their bigotry really get just how much love they are missing out on?

That was sweet and bittersweet. Where are the other girls in this story? A little Alice is always nice.

Thanks omalley!! :-) ITS such a down to earth story, kinda sad to read how their families are rejecting them, but sometimes that’s what happened. That’s fact. Well written story, thanks!! :-)

Aw that’s sad to see that their fathers aren’t very accepting. But they have each other and so much love to give between the two of them. Cute story. Thanks

That was just excellent, very well written and so easy to read on my sacrosanct Sunday morning FF reading time! in the light of their respective rejections, now is as good a time as ever to start their own tradition… Bittersweet but hopeful none the less! Thank you for starting the proceedings. :0) Kx

Love shouldn’t be as conditional as their fathers are making it… As sad as it is for them, they’re better off without. I enjoyed that, thank you for posting. :)
