Bette was minding her own business, sitting on the couch and engrossed in a book when Tina appeared and sat down next to Bette, jostling her out of her book and into reality.

    Hello,” Tina said brightly.

Bette looked up and blinked at Tina. “Did you want something?”

Not really. Just seeing what you were up to in here. You’ve been quiet.”

    I was reading.”

Right.” Tina made herself more comfortable and sighed contentedly. Bette noted the page she was on, closed her book, and gave Tina her full attention. “Well?”

Oh, it’s nothing, really. I just wondered what you wanted to do for New Year’s Eve.”

New Year’s Eve? I don’t want to do anything, T. I never do. I never have. You know that.”

Well, when we were in LA you never wanted to do anything,” Tina said. “I thought it might be different since we were out here. It’s a bigger deal in New York, you know.”

Not for me,” Bette said, opening her book and scanning the page for where she’d left off.

    So, you’d rather stay in?”

I think that goes without saying, T. Just because we’re here doesn’t mean we need to go watch the ball drop with the tourists. That whole scene is for kids anyway,” Bette said absently, trying to pick up the thread of the plot on the page again.

Oh, I wasn’t thinking about that of course,” Tina said. “I’d just as soon stay home, but…”

Bette felt her eyelids sinking to half-mast. She might have known from Tina’s manner that she was being prepped for an unpleasant surprise. “But what, T?”

Well… we were invited to a party. Jonah from work said he would love to have us. You remember meeting Jonah, right?”

I do. And naturally, when you received this invitation, you said you had to check with me first, right?”

Not quite,” Tina said, with an air of studied nonchalance, while avoiding Bette’s eyes and studying her manicured nails. “I sort of accepted.”

Oh.” Bette turned a page in her book.

Well? Aren’t you going to say something?” Tina asked.

What is there to say, T? I hope you’ll have a good time at Jonah’s. Angie and I will carry on here without you. Of course, I’d prefer to spend New Year’s together, but since you’ve made plans…”
