The Professor (21) – FINAL CHAPTER

    “Why are you so angry?”

Dylan just watched as Helena peeled back the lid of yogurt. She dropped her head and gathered the patience she’d had with Helena all along. She’d seen a beautiful, strong woman in her from the start, even as insecure and sad as Helena was deep down. She knew more about the intimidating brunette than Helena knew about herself, so she dropped her shoulders and just looked up at her again.

    “Why did you break them?”

“I didn’t do anything,” Helena insisted, hardly even glancing over at Dylan as she scooped some vanilla yogurt into a bowl before returning the rest to the fridge. “And we need more milk, by the way. I could live off dairy, and we never seem to have enough of it.” Helena stopped cold when she felt Dylan behind her. She just closed the fridge and then closed her eyes.

“I just came home to find a whole bunch of your CDs broken all over the floor of our room.”

“Your room,” Helena was quick to insist, feeling warm arms slip around her waist, but she still felt cold inside. She wanted to snarl at the attempt at kindness, but she knew Dylan too well for that. And Dylan knew she never meant it when she snapped. Helena had a lot of difficulty showing her affection because she’d spent so long manipulating others with it.

“What is it now, Helena? What happened?” Dylan asked firmly, knowing that Helena could burst with anger if she was too soft. But then, she did have some idea what the trouble was. “Were they Bette’s? … Did she give them to you? Tell me.”

Helena hated that she could be so easily understood. Even with her maniacal ways, Dylan could always see right through her. Dylan was completely unafraid – daring, even – so Helena just closed her eyes and leaned forward against the fridge. “Please … please don’t.”

“If you just really hate the CDs, that’s okay too.”

Helena smiled, but she felt like crying, which she’d only done twice in front of Dylan. The first time, Helena had cried the night they re-connected after having broken it off the first time – when she was still with Bette – and the second time she cried was when the divorce papers had arrived. She wouldn’t let this be the third. “It’s nothing. She’s just … gone. Everything she touched should be gone, too.”
