    The Set Up (1)

A new gallery website popped up on the screen, and Angelica leaned in close to watch the as the pictures came into focus – beautiful photography pieces. She sat cross-legged in front of the laptop, leaning on her hands with a smile. While looking for pictures for a school project, she was certain she had found the exact site she needed. And that was when she scrolled down the page to scan over another kind of picture – a portrait of the curator. She looked closely before a bigger smile crossed over her face, and she immediately had a plan.

“Hunny,” her mother, Tina, called out from the kitchen. “Dinner’s ready!”

Angelica tilted the screen further as she skimmed over the woman’s bio – always looking for some sliver of hope for her lonely mother. Although she was seven years old, she understood and beamed at the opportunity, madly scribbling down information before closing the laptop to put it back on her mother’s desk.

The next day was filled with possibility as Angelica phoned the gallery and asked for the woman in the picture – Bette Porter. She said she wanted to buy a print, hearing a professional voice on the other end. Her spirits were lifted at the thought of bringing some cheer into her mother’s life.

While Tina was often happy, Angelica knew that something was missing. She also knew that Tina assured her a number of times that dating wasn’t important to her, but Angelica knew how her mother really felt. Tina would do anything for her, and Angelica knew that, but it also made her sad. That was when she started to try talking her mother into dating again, but Tina wouldn’t hear it.

While Angelica had Bette on the phone, she booked some time later in the week for them to meet. Nervous and hopeful all at once, Angelica finally wrote out the time, and got off the phone with an even bigger smile – her plan would work. She knew it. At least a little, she hoped.

When the day came to see Bette, Angelica thought of bringing Tina, but she knew that her mother would never come with her, and would keep Angelica from going herself. But Angelica was determined.
