She gets to her door and places her forehead delicately against its cold surface. Sam’s gonna need all the strength she can muster for this. As the key slides smoothly into its lock, Sam straightens up and shoves open the door, announcing her arrival. There is an eerie loneliness to her flat despite the obvious signs that someone is lurking. A smell sneaks out from the kitchen, soft music is playing and an unknown jacket hangs amongst Sam’s favourites on the hooks.

    “Hey, I made pasta.”

Sam drops her keys in the bowl at the door and deliberately takes her time hanging up her coat. The seducing powers of the alcohol are finally playing their part.

    “DS Murray… Yeah… Right… No that’s fine. I’ll be right in.”

She gives the woman a fleeting look. “Sorry,” she says, gesturing to her phone. She knows it sounds weak but Sam doesn’t care anymore. Slipping her pants back on, she hears the voice behind her quiver, “No you’re not.” It’s not an accusation, just an observation.
