When You Least Expect It – Chapter 6

Bette frustratingly pulled up to her house, the stress of her day weighing heavy on her shoulders. She got out of her car in a huff and made her way to the front door, determination in every step.

A month had passed since that night of the artist dinner, since Tina had feigned a headache and retreated to her room before Bette could so much as talk to her. It was a month that consisted of Tina practically ignoring or hiding from Bette, interacting with her only when it came to Angie.

Bette had tried multiple times over the last few weeks to get Tina to talk, to give her some kind of understanding about the blonde’s sudden change of heart. Unfortunately, Tina never opened up and Bette had finally decided that enough was enough.

It was bad enough that she had to deal with the massive workload on her desk, the numerous phone calls that always seemed to get her nowhere, and the surprisingly nice yet somewhat temperamental Josephine Simmons but Bette also had to come home everyday to Tina giving her the cold shoulder.

Bette was fed up. Beyond fed up.

It wasn’t until James forced her to take a lunch break earlier that day that Bette had the time to reevaluate the way she’d been living. It was then that she decided she wasn’t going to go another day without talking to Tina. Whatever issue the blonde had, they would resolve it. No ifs ands or buts.

Bette made her way up the porch steps, trying to hold onto the pent-up animosity she had built over the course of her 14 hour long day. She pushed through into the house, hoping to keep a firm grasp on her composure but all that changed the moment she laid eyes on the blonde sitting nervously on the couch.

    "Hi"

"Hey" Bette smiled softly, that same sad smile she had been giving Tina for the past few weeks.

She walked over to the small table where they usually had breakfast, dropping her keys onto the wooden surface before hanging her purse behind one of the chairs. She felt her resolve quickly crumbling, wondering yet again just why was it that the mere presence of Tina never failed to unravel her.
