    The Island – The Rescue

    CHAPTER 9:

The moment the gun went off, Bette felt her chest explode with violent pain. She felt her feet being lifted off the ground and she felt herself being carried over the side of the ridge as if her body was no longer her own. Her eyes were wide open in shock and horror, and the last thing she saw before she shut them tight was Tina’s beautiful face, her expression mirroring her own.

The pain in her chest spread like a scorching wildfire. It burned slowly but viciously, ravaging every fiber in her being with unbelievable agony. But it disappeared quickly as a new terror met her with a frightening fury. She was falling, falling fast and hard, and only the bottom of the ravine would stop her. But the vines were forgiving as Bette’s hands reached and grasps and slid over them, again and again, leaves flying everywhere. She felt her skin stinging as the sharp stems sliced her without mercy. As each vine broke, a new one took its place, not saving her, not catching her but slowing down the momentum of her descent allowing her to catch her breath and clear her mind.

As the last of the vines tore to shreds in her fingertips, Bette felt her body enveloped in warm air. It blew off her hat and pulled at her clothes. Her hair felt like it was being ripped off her head yet it caressed her skin with an odd gentleness until her face and limbs were numb. She closed her eyes tighter, not wanting to see the hard, heartless surface that would break every bone in her body. Her thoughts went to Tina, as her life was seconds away from ending.

But the next thing Bette felt, surprised her. It didn’t feel like rock, solid earth, it felt more like thin, weak glass, still painful, still merciless but slight and fragile. Her body broke through the barrier and Bette found she was gasping as the shock of the impact knocked the breath out of her lungs. And her breath was just as painful. It felt heavy and cold and burned in her lungs. She forced her eyes to open and panic filled her quickly. She was under water, still falling but she was alive and that was enough for her mind to get back to work. Her adrenaline kicked to high gear and she pulled off her backpack and kicked and swam upward as fast as she could. Her chest aching, her arms flailing, her lungs about to burst, she swam with everything she had left. On her way up she saw her trusty machete and grabbed it, wrapping her fingers around it tightly then stuffing it securely in her shirt.
