    Mr. Kennard

I woke with a start, there was still darkness outside, and I looked at the clock. Shit, one-fifty. I then heard Jackson calling out. I got up in a hurry and ran for his room. I opened the door to him sitting up in his bed crying.

    ”Jackson baby, what’s wrong?”

”B, I had a scary dream,” he cried and curled himself into my arms.

”Do you want to talk about it,” I asked and he shook his head no, ”do you want me to stay with you until you go back to sleep?”

    ”Yes please.”

I made myself comfortable in the bed and he stayed cuddled in my arms. I started to sing him a song and I held him close. He sang with me a bit, until his breathing became regular and he fell asleep. I moved as slowly as possible, and I left his room. I kept the door opened slightly and went back to our room. I slid back into bed and wrapped my arms around Tina.

We woke with the sunlight again, it was a Sunday so her parents were in a tussle. They were off to the church run by Tina’s sister. We had decided to forgo church after yesterday’s events. I checked on Jackson and he was still sound asleep as we went down for breakfast. Tina started cooking and I helped chop the fresh fruit.

After breakfast we decided to go back to town and go shopping. We’d be leaving after lunch for home and I wanted to see more of Chapel Hill. We shopped for a couple hours and stopped for a while in the park and watched Jackson play. After a while we decided to head back to Tina’s parent’s house to pack and prepare for lunch. It was going to be my last shot to win her father over and I was gonna damn well try to get him to come around.

We arrived at the house and went in. Her mother was in the kitchen, rustling around. We could hear some old country gospel playing in the background. I smiled at the memories of my own childhood coming to me when I heard that music. We passed the den when I heard Tina’s father call out to me. My heart sunk in my chest and Tina looked at me worried. I slowly walked to the den to recieve my fate.
