    Nobis Pacem Chapter 1

The flower arrangement tonight, though, struck a discordant note at this moment. Red: the color of blood. White: the color of heaven?

It made my new reality blindingly clear, in colors and words — blood; heaven; death.

I retreated to a safe space in my mind, where a childhood memory of a science project when I was in – fourth grade? – rose unbidden to my thoughts. I remembered that our task had been to type up a description of how animals either gave birth to or protected their young. Later, during computer class we’d found out that the assignment was meant to introduce us to the wonders of converting our typed up report into a computer program that helped people do presentations, using a format called “slides.” Five ideas to a slide; five slides at most for each presentation. After we’d each translated our report to the slides, we’d individually presented the finished product to the class.

It had been an eye-opening process for most. But in my case, it had also inadvertently led to the introduction to something I’d never thought about until that point.

And it had nothing to do with the science project.

Mom and Dad had been watching something called the “Mothman Prophecies” while I researched what I wanted to write about for the science project using the MacBook they’d given me for Christmas. It had been the first computer I’d been given and came with one string attached: whenever I hopped onto the web while using it, I could only do so when one of them was around. So a week before the project was due, I’d been on the floor, belly-down and resting on my elbows as I scanned web pages on the flickering screen of my precious MacBook, while they’d relaxed on the couch, holding hands, eating popcorn.

“What’s a moth, anyway?” I’d asked, bored by flitting from one screen to the next, and more intrigued about what I could hear from the movie they were watching.

“Look it up, cupcake, you’ve got a laptop now, right? You’re a big girl, and you should be able to figure things out by yourself,” Dad had responded, looking down at me affectionately. He’d tickled my tummy with the edge of his evening slippers. “But we can talk about whatever you find, okay?”

      • Here in spirit. But this is about a few special L words that play out in a couple’s life in another part of town. In the fringes of the world of the series I’ve been writing; but different. Hope you like it.

    1. Will try this again. Left a message about 4:00 this morning and something happened, it’s not posted. My message was to thank you for posting such a beautiful love story. And that I hope this story will be continued we would like to know what happens to Aerin in the future. Thanks for sharing.

    2. Dainty, Hellbent, and new friends: thanks for the comments. Honestly: was tough to pull this together, but it was worth it. Am v glad you liked it. Ok. I hear you. It may take a while for an update on her story, but it will be coming.

      • Well this was a pleasant surprise. I am always seeking an episode from your creativity. So much, I had to buy a smaller electronic device so that I might read your input on the go. Now, for me buying another electronic anything is saying a lot. I am one of the “dial phone” “get up and change the channel” “do not Text me and expect an answer” old school DIE HARD. But, your writing genius persuaded me to become a mobile reader at my neighborhood “coffee house.” Please continue to write

    3. Beautiful story. I could feel Aerin’s struggle. I would love to read about the 18 months in between their first time and Chris’ final moments. I sure it would be moving.
