    “I saw her.”

“What? I don’t under-“ Cat squints at Sam. What is she talking about?

    “Before.”

Cat leans out from the corner of Frankie’s room, desperate for any communication from Sam however frightening it may turn out to be. She is careful not to interrupt, hoping to strike a balance between looking interested and inviting conversation.

It’s been a long 48 hours for Sam. Unwanted sex, unneeded drinks and unfulfilled moments have finally taken their toll. She grips the edge of the bed frame as if it is supporting her entire body. Fingers continue to curl and uncurl around the rails. Sam appears to not even realise who she is talking to. Her words are all directed at the sleeping Frankie as she peers down at her from the end of the bed.

“Before she got here. Outside your flat.”

Cat stiffens slightly. She can fill in the blanks. She doesn’t even mean for her voice to come out so quietly.

“You told her where to go.”

Now Sam looks up. Stray hair from her fringe hides part of her eyes. She can’t say all that she wants to say. She wouldn’t know where to begin. It’s clear to Cat that Sam is not going to continue. There’s no point really. The silence in the room is punctuated only by Frankie’s loud breathing. Cat purses her lips. Her history clashing with her present. Her new love is standing next to her old love. The scene is not lost on her. Cat smiles inwardly. She knows what she wants. She’s known it since that night.

Just as she opens her mouth to let everything pour forth, there is a timid groan from Sam.

    “I trusted you, Cat.”

    Cat’s smile disappears in a heartbeat. “Sam…”

“I trusted you.” She repeats. “There’s nowhere to go from that.”

Sam’s eyes continue to hold their gaze until it is Cat who finally has to look away.
